Robert Slate, winner of the 2011 Racer X Amateur Film Festival, not only won great prizes from GoPro, MSR, Answer, and Pro Taper, but he was also commissioned to shoot an exclusive video for Racer X Films. Robert spent the day with John and Ryan Dowd at their home in Massachusetts to film this exclusive Racer X Films edit.
Enjoy!

Rad, been riding with my Dad for 30 years. It's as good as it gets.
The Junk Yard Dog and The Junk Yard Pup. Very cool!
Some pretty epic father and son stuff, this is what MX is all about! Track looks fun and man, I kinda like those Husky's. Can't wait to see them doing some AMA Pro stuff on those things! It's been a while since someone has ridden a Husky on US soil at pro level.
Steve Lamson, Mickey Dymond before honda won the title for him
How big of a grin you think Dowdy had on his face while battling the youngster. This is what it's all about.
No disrespect to John and his son cause its obvious they've both got skills but what the F were they thinking buying Huskys! Those things look like such pieces of Sh%t its recdiculous. Even if its a deal, Johns got enough money. GO OUT AND BUY A SUZUKI OR KAWI OR HONDA anything but Huskys. Its sad because it looks like his sons actually got skills and hes totally prevented by that bike.
@Kawi567 Those bikes really ain't that bad these days. Saying that he is totally prevented by that bike is ridicolous.
This is prolly the worst video i've seen all year.
Has the young dowd raced any amauter championships? never heard or seen of him.
Dowd is getting better support from that dealer to ride that bike. He road a clapped out Kawi at Southwick last year, and that thing was putting up smoke signals by minute 15
Kawi567, you watching a 4 minute video doesn't make you an expert on how good a Husky is. Have you ridden a newer Husky?
my buddy got a husky 250f to ride last summer and i must say the bike worked awesome i always rode hondas but i thought the bike was a lot better then i thought it was going to be. im not so sure about the 450 though it didn't seem to be as up to par as the 250 was..
Dowdy learned to race and ride on the most godawful crap imaginable. I could see why he could care less if his kid is at a disadvantage right now. And I cant believe how big he is! I saw him on his first few races on the KTM peewees. Damn, all grown up.
1. Worst video this year.
2. I have a fair amount of time on a 2010 Husky 450 and they are o.k; the cornering is where I think they suffer(even in the woods), I have been on Yamaha's and recently Honda's and I think that for a stock bike the Husky does have some trick parts but they have too or there would be no reason to buy one. If it's free, great, but for my money I'll stick with RED!
Huskys?
I doubt it.
To mxturtle26...How many videos has Racer X payed you a thousand dollars to make? PS learn how to spell...
Why is this the worst video of the year? I don't get it. You people are so lame. Someone shot some video of John and his son having fun at a "home made" track in the woods. Fun for us to see regardless of quality or value. Newsflash... none of us give a S#!T if you liked the video or not, so STFU and go back to your twilight
Nothing wrong with a husky.... didn't that brand win a World 125/250f title in the last decade??
If this video is so bad why don't you make a video and have it be better and win the films festival. STOP HATING!
Shonuff304, a 2010 husky 450 is not the same as either one of the bikes the dowds are riding.
Great video. Hopefully I will see Dowd at millville this year!
Loved the ending. It's good to know that the giggles you get after hitting a dumb jump never go away!
@Shonuff304- ??? what are you talking about not turning huskys turn wayy better in the woods than any bike and the 08-10 450's were monster motors, very reliable, the 1 you rode must not have been set up at all.
@allthehuskyhatingtards the husky brand is coming back
husky makes awesome bikes 2 or 4 stroke, husky has won many world enduro championships over the last few years (note the WEC are way faster and technical than anything woods in the US) huskys 310 is one badd bike it kills 450's over here and overseas. Just check out how fast enduro is in europe.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vH-UncgW7Fc
I loved the video (Maybe not the music). But Dowdy Rules!!!!! I don't know why there are haters. My buddy races a Husky every weekend at REM and gets top five every week. If your not pro, it's not the bike it's you. I hope he races Southwick again. Those passes ruled.
Hope JD plans to ditch that Husky for his Kawi when it comes race time. Age + Husy = - 16
The bikes aren't as bad as they are portrayed to be. Secondly, the bikes are actually less expensive than the Big 5, and Chaplin Kawasaki sells them, which has been John's sponsor for a while now. Third, the Dowd's ride the NESC Circuit. Husky gives a boatload of contingency to that series.
Simple really.
don't see why you people are talking shit on husky's , I have a 2010 tc 250 and sunday i rode my friends yamie 250 and the power was so diffrent , The yamaha turned like complete shit motor was shit compared to my bike . Also feels better then my rm 250 and my cr 125 so you people just need to shut up and watch .
Stop hating on husky! Especially if you have never had seat time on them, I'm not gonna rip on the bikes I've never rode so don't rip on husky if you've never been on one. Husky also makes awesome two strokes 125/144/165, 250/300, the 250/300 will rip the lips off any other manufacturers two strokes of the same size and will beat a lot of 450's to the first turn.
So why is we are all wrapped up talking about the bikes? Talk about missing the point.
Seems to me this video speaks to the soul of the sport - having a blast with friends and family. I'm with gstine & factorymessageboarder - how big a grin did Dowdy have under the helmet schooling his son? Talk about making a memory. I know I have a big grin watching my son on his Honda CRF50. Can't wait til he is older and we can go riding the track together.
Yeah, I can write tonight. Should be "so why are we all wrapped up..."
Time to step away from the laptop
Reminds me of the old school terra firma videos where they woke him up out of bed, and he went and did his work outs!
I hear he is getting factory support also.
@ mx_passion17 - They mostly race in New England - NESC, Winchester SP NEMX. Ryan is a fast B rider. I read once that the problem with LL is if big 16 raced it he couldn't do the National.
The Husky has come a very long way since Alesio Chiodi, and Travis Preston were on Factory bikes in the US. They have Ricky Deitrick riding them this year too and I believe Kyle Redmond too.
In any event, very cool to see Dowdy having some fun with the Pup. True roots motocross right here.....
Final analysis from some of the comments here..............people suck.
Cool video...JYD is a legend. probably doesn't pay for his bikes anyways.
On the 10 scale, this video imho has all the elements of a 3 (2 without the Dowds). Nothing fast, exciting, or unexpected happens. Yeah, Dowd is a great, but if the exact same video were made only it was some anonymous father/son, it would have 6 hits on youtube, all from grandma and grandpa. I think it is great that a father and son love riding together, but I wouldn't waste my time watching it. That isn't hate. It just isn't very good video. It isn't worth the few minutes I spent watching it. But, if you think it is the best dad gum video you have ever seen, good for you. I don't hate you for it.
Refried, you could say that about every video, movie or article ever written on the planet." if it didn't have {fill in the blank} it wouldn't be worth watchin'. This was an amateur film festival winner, not Steven Spielberg. I just read that this kid is 15. please post a link to your latest video on racer x. me thinks your brain is refried.
That's like a grass roots moto vid!!! I was grinning like an idiot the whole time...if you were too, you know what its like messing around and having a great time with your family and friends on your backwoods track....loved it!
It was really weird watching someone whip...ahem...a Husky. Cool bikes, but motocross just ain't their thing these days.
B459 your most likely friends with this fellow. He needs to chill with the editing learn how to use some angels. as for the film festival he would not have won it if he wasn't from new england. compare this to something Danny Stu. Shots.
I farted
You seem to know so much about shooting and editing video maybe you should enter the next contest. And as a matter of fact Robert is friend of my son and just starting off.To win the Racer X contest is a pretty great start and what the F*** because he is from new england have to due with wining?Like I said before when you win the contest next year and make a grand then you can run your mouth. Then other A**holes like you can come on and tell YOU how much your video sucks.
@ride4husky- It may not have been set up properly(sag and suspension were set) but I do think the motor was great, very use able power but it didn't feel as planted in the corners as the Honda's. I didn't feel like I was at a disadvantage with it but I did feel faster on the Honda.
I'm happy for the kid who won the video contest and I have always been a Dowd fan, I just didn't love the vid; no disrespect meant.
My reply was for next years winner MX turtle 26.............
That was some pretty cool footy of a proud papa ripping it up with his little man!!! goooooood stuff!!!!! thx RX!
I am still racing my 1972 Husky CR250 and it still rocks. Rode pro track at redbud last year and did laroccos leap ( single, single, single ) . It is 95 % rider , so any bike with a good rider will do good. The new huskys are pretty good compared to all the other manufacturers this year and can be competative on aly level.
Are the Husqvarna's Legal to Run in the AMA Nationals?
Hope So It'll be nice to see them out on the tracks once again.
Dowdy is one of my all time Favorite Riders on top of that!
