Official, Finally: Mike Alessi joins Motoconcepts Racing

Monday, October 24, 2011 | 1:00 PM
National #5 motocross title contender Mike Alessi and Alessi Racing Inc. will be combining forces with team Motoconcepts for the 2012 race season with their sights set firmly on racing at the highest level.

Mike Alessi will be competing on an RMZ 450 Suzuki built from parts and components that are available to the masses via race shops, the Internet, and retail dealers.

This effort will be a family effort (brothers Mike and Jeff Alessi) with the support of team Motoconcepts, who in itself, is a supplier of off road accessory items for motorcycle racers world wide.

"This is an exciting opportunity for me" says Mike Alessi "Mike Genova and Motoconcepts is providing me with the infrastructure to build and manage my own race program."

The combined forces of Mike Alessi, Alessi Racing Inc. and Motoconcepts is a new and innovative approach to a rider and team relationship that may set a new standard in both Supercross and Motocross racing world wide.

At this point, I almost feel bad for the guy. I hope he does well just to get his dad off his back.

Family Effort....but no mention of Tony, but we all know that when Mike says "build and managem MY OWN race program, that means Tony's race program.....So does this mean the Motoconcepts team of last year that housed a few riders will only support Mike and Jeff Alessi in 2012?

Sounds like a downgrade for Motoconcepts......

Did a 10 year old write this press release?

Profile Picture
dc99 wrote: 1:53pm October 24, 2011

the ironic part is just the other day there was a video where Jeff Alessi was saying how happy he'll be to be away from "their program", and find his own identity vs. always being Mike Alessi's brother, and now the Program has come to where he already was?! Sorry Jeff. And i thought DV left this team already? there was a previous comment saying "good move DV", but i'm almost certain he moved on already. I never saw a release saying they were changing brands from Yamaha to Suzuki, so was this a change brought about by the Alessi's relationship with Suzuki? Alot of questions. but hopefully it works out. I really do wish them the best, it would be really sad for someone with Mike's talent to never win ANY professional championship.

dc99, I meant good move DV for leaving this mess. Why polish the brass on the Titanic?

So Tony has more or less taken the role of DV. Old MCR team is out and replaced by 'Alessi Racing' (Tony's team). Boy, the owner of MCR is going to regret this one! The question is, will he be rebuilding his team a year from now or much sooner? If Motoconcepts is just looking for a bunch of press, than he will get his wish...

gasket wrote: 2:24pm October 24, 2011

Man, could you imagine where these guys could be if it wasn't for their dad? Seriously, if I had the capital to own my own team, I would go for Alessi over JS7 based on personality, but I would tell him his dad can't come anywhere near him for the entire contract length. Mike has potential, but Tony is absolute poison for his game.

DV just posted an interesting tweet on the situation. Drama to follow???

Profile Picture

DV Tweet Copied
800 2 MCR... If i followed right, he signed with MCR, then he wanted to go to JGR, signed 2 deals, MCR sent a press release to make to deal fall thru between 800 & JGR, The alessis sent an email to the press saying Mike wasn't signed with MCR, only Cycle News ran the release, MCR threatened the Alessis with a lawsuit, JGR took the deal off the table because they didn't want to be in the middle of the mess. MotoConcepts got who they wanted but obviously the Alessis don't want to be there. Where is the "Reality of MCR" or the "Alessi's World" when you need it! ;-)

Profile Picture
dc99 wrote: 2:38pm October 24, 2011

That's an interesting tweet. But really, the Alessi's would have never worked at JGR, so everyone is better off in the long run. Gotcha Jake511< sorry. and i agree! haha

Could you imagine the drama under the JGR tent with stew and alessi? That's a lot of family time.

Alessi "2nd level" pro rider. He's falling with his fallen Factory Ride. Dirty moves at the MEC with Dungey. A highly touted amatuer that "never" lived up to his amatuer resume... He never will make a championship run again...he doesn't have the stones.

I thought Jeff Alessi was going on his own. He said in an interview that he had some inside forces he wanted to be away from. Oh well.
As for the rest of the team? Jake Canada and Kyle Chisholm? Hope they still have a ride with Moto Concepts nest year.

Mmmm, already a lot of smoke... I hope DV is out by now (or is there an equivalent of goon-riding in management?! ;P ).

I hope Chisholm ends up with good ride (JGR maybe). He was looking good this year when he wasn't injured.

Genova should have thought a lot of things through. Like letting team manager Michael Young go. Big mistake. This team is about to flop. the Alessi are gonna be in control? I am rooting for Mike this year, but for the team to allow the Alessi's to create their own program is a huge mistake. The team will be gone in 2 years.

Mike will beat Andrew Short when they race.

Profile Picture
kx408 wrote: 4:39pm October 24, 2011

To me, it sounds like they are just MotoConcept sponsored, not the "official" race team that involves other riders. Or maybe there are no other riders and the Alessi's are just going to use all of MotoConcept's equipment like the trailer, etc??? It is very poorly written.

Profile Picture
RocketRobin wrote: 4:40pm October 24, 2011

Think back over Mike's pro career...... has he ever passed any rider of substance and held the pass? Not really. He gets the holeshot and fades back to 4th or worse...... if he doesn't get the holeshot and starts 20th......... he works up to 18th.

Mike can't pass....... never could. He can't be a title contender without being able to make your way to the front of the pack at some point, cause you're not going to get every holeshot.

Jeff is getting sucked back in to the Alessi vortex and that's too bad for him...... I wish them all the best, but it's bad for Jeff and the last ditch effort for Mike to regain something that he never had........ a championship at the pro level.

kx408 wrote: 4:40pm October 24, 2011

Oh, but DV's tweet explains why when I went to the link last week that said Alessi to MotoConcept that it said the post had been removed.

Profile Picture
DH502 wrote: 4:48pm October 24, 2011

FINALLY, the Alessi's get their own team! Well kind of their own. I mean after how many years of fighting with their team managers they figured it out? Now Tony & Mike can do it their way and we will see how that works out. Who knows, maybe good. It worked in amatuers for them.

This link below may help some of you understand a little more about the DV vs MotoConcept split. The times they are a changing. World economy is affecting how manufacturers are interfacing with the public. And as the article states above;

"A new and innovative approach to a rider and team relationship that may set a new standard in both Supercross and Motocross racing world wide."

I would say that above statement is a very optimistic viewpoint on a less than optimistic manufacturer/rider/racer world we are witnessing on a daily basis...

Although Mike Alessi can be a real tool at times, you almost have to feel sorry for him. His days of factory rides are over. He had his chance(s) and never made it happen. Over the next few years, the likes of Wilson, Barcia, Tomac, and Baggett will be making their way to the 450s and there will be even less room in the class for second rate riders.

Mike's chances for a title are well behind him. Guarantee you in five years Racer X will be doing an article on a frustrated, retired Alessi titled "Snatching Mediocrity from the Jaws of Greatness: the Alessi Story"

Don't feel too sorry for Jeff, he's the one who cheap shotted Josh Grant mid-air, costing him his knee. I wouldn't want to be associated with a turd like that if I could avoid it. Believe the hype! NOT!!!!!

SW460,

Don't forget the even more blantently dirty move Grant pulled on Alessi a couple years ago in the outdoors...what goes around comes around. Grant's obvious takeout of Alessi was far dirtier than Jeff Alessi's and Grant even admitted that it was intentional afterwards on film.

caseypons- thanks for the link! Very interesting and very open interview with DV12. Not a fan of DV but even less of a fan of Mike Alessi and his father. Going into the MEC I was actually rooting for Alessi to have a good showing but all he showed was that he is still the ungrateful punk that he was as an amateur. He has not gained one ounce of professionalism over his "professional" career.

Innovative approach to rider and team relationship. It kind of reminds me of what the Wonder Warthog guys did with the privateer riders. The riders seem like they provide their own bikes while Warthog transports and provides mechanics.
Alessi just bought Suzukis and now I hear Canada is on a Honda.
Where is Chisholm?

Good point penguin bob, he made passes, it was just in the wrong direction. The kid has the speed and talent, but for some reason just can't seem to hang it out. Then again maybe that is all he has and the expectations of him are to high. Maybe the bar was raised to high by his family "Believe the Hype".
