Sign Of The Lap Times: Valkenswaard

Tuesday, April 26, 2011 | 1:40 PM

Round 2 of the FIM MXGPs from Valkenswaard, Netherlands was an all orange show. In the MX1 (450cc) class the KTM backed machines of Antonio Cairoli and Max Nagl took home the top two spots while down in the MX2 (250cc) class the KTM duo of Jeffrey Herlings and Ken Roczen were un-matched all day. So let's get over to the lap charts, brought to you by Motion Pro, to see how it all broke down.

After a horrid start to the 2011 season in Bulgaria Antonio "Wholly" Cairoli rebounded in a big way taking the overall in Valkenswaard with a (1-2) score. Cairoli injured his knee in Bulgaria but that did not seem to affect the defending World Champion as he set the fastest lap of the day in both motos. With the series taking a few weeks off before the Grand Prix at Glen Helen expect Cairoli to be near 100 percent by then.

The Dutch native and bonafida sand superstar Jeffrey Herlings once again proved he is nearly unstoppable on his home track. Setting the track ablaze Herlings set the fastest lap of the day in both motos, did we mention they were fastest "overall" laps of the day.

Fellow KTM companion Ken Roczen was also on the gas in Valkenswaard, but had little chance of stopping the KTM bulldozer, Herlings, on his home soil. But Roczen did manage to set the second fastest lap in both motos en route to a second place finish on the day.

Faster than the field!... @Sebastiaan the GOAT would have smoked him at the southwick tho...try and argue it...in his day RC beat EVRYONE he faced...EVERYONE...same is yet to be said of Herlings.

3 secs faster than Roczen is impressive to say the least.....But how about Herlings second moto fast lap being MORE THAN 3 secs faster then Cairoli's first moto fast lap?! That kid is on fire!

seems like someone stepped on "the what's "toes
how could you compare 2 rider's of a different era in motocross, and furthermore what's the point, just give the kid herlings "16 years of age" his props for doing so well
The arguing who is better is a neverending story, and pointless
Sure RC was great, but not invincible ---> JS7

The What ? Where in the report does it mention Ricky Carmichael ? I watched the races live & never saw Ricky there. Why do you have to compare everything to the US. There is life beyond the great USA, try pulling your head oiut of your arse, sorry ass & taking a look !!

didierlotsyeng wrote: 4:18pm April 26, 2011

@js.. Correct... Herlings for his age, and what he has achieved... It's impressive... Even by Dutch standards.
Was at the race.. And u could clearly see... The kid was fu**ing fast!
@The What?.. Why compare the GOAT to a kiddo named Herlings? First... The GOAT never came and raced in sandy conditions such as Valkenswaard or many other circuits in europe.. And, different era my friend... The GOAT was good in his time, and he build a more then impressive career.. Good for RC...

@Ian Fitz-Gibbon the mx2 class races first when the track is much smoother than the mx1 class thats why. KTM DOMINATION! and thanks a bunch racerx for giving us more info on the GP's

Good on you racerx for again looking outside the USA and reporting on the world scene. People like "The What" on here don't realize that there are more countries out here.

Profile Picture
Raymond wrote: 6:33pm April 26, 2011

@ s-daddy. Herlings was 3 seconds faster than Cairoli in his second moto who started after Cairolis 1 moto. And they didn not groom the track other than the 1 turn. So he had similar or worse conditions.

How can Clement Desalle come here for an outdoor race and spank everyone but Dungey (yes, even Stewart) and finish 5th in the GP race? Did he fall eight times or something?

You people are unbelievable. You keep talking about how us Americans need to look outside the USA because there is more good riders out there. You are right, we do need to look outside the US but there is a race called the MxON that sorta debunks all the rumors about people being BETTER than our US riders...Granted Roczen came over and handed it to a lot of our boys but havent we won that event for like the last 80 years or something...just sayin...oh and Hearlings looks phenomenal...I hope to see him more in the future! Fire Away Boys.....

JS thanks for that youtube vid... Jeffrey looks like he could decimate Styla rattray at Southwick. Cant believe he's that much faster than Rocky. I didn't think anyone this year would be faster than Rocky. How does Herlings compare to Marv Musq these days?"??

Profile Picture
Carlsbad wrote: 11:06pm April 26, 2011

I believe Herlings IS coming to the U.S. in a couple years so, he'll have his day in the sun at Southwick as well and no, I don't think there will be a U.S. equivalent of this flat-out sand track badazz when he arrives unless Barcia sticks in the class that long which is unlikely. While his talent was the deciding factor, being 16 & weighing a buck nothin' and those rocketship KTM's had to help. I can't wait to see how Musquin fares on the AMA tour with Orange power.

Profile Picture
Carlsbad wrote: 11:20pm April 26, 2011

I don't want to argue AMA vs G.P. except to make one point I think is valid.
While the top 10 at AMA vs G.P. races can be contended till forever, I do think the 11th through 40th ranked riders have a little more something (speed, aggression, stamina, whatever) in the AMA ranks. This could be due to Youthstream not paying riders and good rides and talented racers are hard to come by over there. I'm sure there's more factors and I'd enjoy hearing them

Team U.S.A. always beats the World @ MXdN because no country can put three good riders together as easily as we can.......depth of talent, duh. Although a few are coming real close, Australia, England, New Zeland and the always strong Belgium.......almost forgot Puerto Rico, Ha!

I watched that 1st moto and I can tell you, that steven frossard guy is for real. He wasnt that good last yr but I dont know what hes done in the off season. Mx2 Herlings was unbelievable. He made Rockzen look like average rider. Cairolli has a new hair cut huh? The italian is going baldy sooner than he can retire.

Profile Picture
dgizzy wrote: 11:41pm April 26, 2011

Hey Carlsbad, the reason team USA wins MXON is bcoz we have the largest pool of riders to choose from. Remember our country alone is bigger than all the countries that participate in GP. So say you take the best 3 riders from Idaho, That would be Jake Weimer and 2 non pro riders so there you have it. Oh and some states here are way bigger than the european countries.

Profile Picture
mxjoe99 wrote: 12:39am April 27, 2011

If it was USA VS The World and it was a sand track or a 80 mph hard track it would be a different story. Herlings would be handing out ass whoopings at the wick for sure! A USGP at the wick would be awesome. It still isn't as rough as a sand track overseas.

Profile Picture

pony up and see for yourselves. I did and it was great to watch plenty of leads to MX life tv... they will be showing Glen Helen and Des Nations and all mx Gps
Was like $59 US but I dug it So cool to watch live World Gp Racer X rocks I'll be at Hangtown loving it

Profile Picture
js wrote: 6:37am April 27, 2011

@ organ doner: no problem, in the sand musquin couldn't keep up with herlings last year,i do believe that if herlings trains more on hardpacked and get's a little better at it,he could be a world champ fore sure, in 2008 he became
85 cc Dutch champ
85cc German champ
85cc European champ
85cc world Champ
That's why everts wanted to sign him

The whole problem with the USA versus Europe is that, the USA is 1 country but it's bigger than all the countries in europe put together, like dgizzy wrote

Didielotsyeng wrote: 9:54am April 27, 2011

js... Biggest talent of the Netherlands since the mid 80's... Let's hope his parents will be smart enough to listen to some good advise how to let their kid evolve... And not stay put on the european soil, and just be a once a year hero... When the GP is held in the Netherlands.

Wow! What a great stream of coherent and fact based comments. A reprieve from the vile crazy talk sometimes present.

All excellent points. Remember Langston, Reed, Townley, Pourcel are all guys who have won SX and/or MX titles here. Given the number of riders we have in the USA and our depth, that is pretty impressive. That is not to say anything negative about the USA riders, just to acknowledge the talent overseas.

Nice job Racer X. Fun to see the sport overseas and watch riders we normally do not watch on SPEED.

JS and didierlotsyeng I was just trying to stir the pot dudes take it easy! But I do remember RC waxing Everts at the MXON on a CR250 in the sand while everts was riding some big ole thumper (btw RC caught him from waaaaay back) and Everts was considered to be the best sand rider.

JS - JS7 NEVER beat RC for a championship. remember 2007 RC rode partial series - LIVE WITH IT DUDE.

@abgz11 - i actually work in Europe and have had more stamps on my passport than most so I am aware of many countries and cultures world wide - I'll clarify my point for you RC was the Best and he beat all that he faced - simple as that. and some video on youtube watching a guy rail around a trtack he's done hundreds of laps on isn't going to sell me on his speed. Sorry.

BTW next week I fly to Australia. live with it.

@ the What, LOL i do believe Carmichael was getting waxed by Stewart in the 07 SX series, Stewart did win moto's in 07 outdoors against RC , but never really rode well outdoors untill 08 with the help of Aldon Baker, but again dude this is pointless, some might say your ignorant, cause RC wasn't invincible
Why bring up RC in an article about the GP's
If somebody does an excellent job,is your reply automatically, WELL HE WOULD OF DONE A BETTER JOB,to me such an answer seems kinda childish

The fact of the matter is we will never know cause if it didn't happen like the herlings vs RC, it's nothing more than an assumption, or maybe in your world you would know the outcome, and you would think of this as a fact, IMAGINARY

But arguing on the internet is like the special olympics ....................... hahaha
This is fun though hahaha

In every fuc*ing article about the GPs, there is always someone who makes paragones. It's unbelievable..... STOP! Americans will always say americans are better and Europeans viceversa... Desalle rode a great race last year at Unadilla, in my opinion there's not so much difference between the two championships. The times are changin'.
