Jeffrey Herlings Injury Update

Friday, March 1, 2013 | 9:25 AM
Racer X Contributor Adam Wheeler is currently in Qatar covering the opening round of the 2013 GPs, and sent us the following update on defending MX2 Champion Jeffrey Herlings who had a bad crash earlier this week:

Jeffrey Herlings has limped off the plane and into Doha after requiring a visit to the doctor's for a training crash from his Red Bull KTM midweek. While the teenager claimed on Twitter he'll be happy with a top five and doesn't even know if he will be able to make the gate through pain to his left knee, there could be a degree of playful gamesmanship to his claims on the eve of what many have been claiming will be a 'cake-walk' campaign ahead for the Dutchman. The depth of Herlings' fitness and pain threshold is unknown, but if he rides to anything like the capacity shown in 2012 then he could still easily win this event.

I cant wait for this kid to get to the U.S., our series needs a personality like his.

Actually, his personality might keep him from coming here in the first place. The kids poor sportsmanship is second only to J-Law's and even Lawrence didn't have a mouth on him like Herlings.

I hope he comes here too but some make it sound like he will stay over there and go for Evert's record. Lot of world champs have come over here and had a hard time so maybe he does not want that.

Herlings is an amazing talent, but don't forget, K-Roc kicked his butt over there. Would still be fun to see him race here, but according to his interviews, he doesn't have much interest. Doesn't seem to like America or Americans. It WOULD be fun to see Barcia Bam-Bam him, though.

Cant imagine why he wouldnt like Americans? LOL that was sarcasm in case you missed it. Sometimes I say to myself "who do us Americans think we are?" Everyone gives him crap about dropping an F-Bomb in a frickin twitter comment, WTF!! Our American riders all put up a good front when the time is right but I guarantee the same ones that thank god on the podium talk like trailer trash when off camera.

There you yankie doodles go, running off at the mouth as usual, talking smack without knowing anything at all.

Firstly, yes Roczen did beat him in his last year in Europe, but he's a year older than Herlings. It was his rookie season and he still finished 2nd to Kenny. Last year he was simply in a class of his own, whipping the likes of Searle, who did pretty damn good when he was in the states, right?

Secondly, Herlings never had the sort of parent support any of the top guys had. He comes from a poor background and a broken home and was supported as best as possible by his mom, yet he still became world champion at age 17. What other kid could have done that?

Thirdly, yeah, he's not afraid to say what he thinks and maybe he's a bit mouthy, but he's had to fight all his life to live his dream without all the gimme's all the PC kids got.

He'll get to you guys when he's good and ready, don't worry about that, and when he does, all the Chinchawooloos, or whatever his name is, and Bells and all your other wannabe's will wish they'd never heard of him.

This guy is the real deal. He's even better than Kenny, and that, coming from a German, is high praise indeed.

MustardDog wrote: 12:21pm March 1, 2013

eunuch mike, you said the same things about Kroc, and he is just now, after years of trying, finally being able to work up to the speed needed to be up top. Herlings would be smart to just stay in the GPs and tick off easy titles like Everts did. I will say, he can haul ass in the sand box.

Profile Picture
Motod6 wrote: 12:32pm March 1, 2013

Herlings is good, maybe even great. I just don't think he has the mental strength to come over and get beat for a year and learn. Kenny was humbled last year and had to swallow his pride. Same with Marvin. Now this year Kenny will most likely win the SX title and is my pick for MX as well.

Euromike.. It's funny you say "PC kids" because I think Mitch at PC would be the only one to take him. I say bring him over, it's more compition and entertainmet for the fans. KTM would be the smoothest and easiest way. I just don't see him and Roger working well together.

@mustardonmyhotdog. Roczen was the top rookie in his first MX season. When you consider the tracks and conditions were brand new to him, only a fool like your good self would see that as being a poor start to his MX career in the land of the brainwashed and home of the kenyan president.
This is only his 2nd full season in SX and he's leading the west coast in front of the hottest young guy in the US of A. right now, ET. How is that bad?
Yes, I crowed long and hard about Ken, but you are now seeing how right I was. No, much to your chargin (look up the meaning), Jeffery will come to the US and prove once again that the top boys here are a match for the best in the land of the big whopper, and home of over 20 million illegal immigrants. I would love to write the other thing about your land and home, you know, I think it's sung in your anthem, but I can't quite remember it right now. I have a habit of forgetting inappropriate things. Euromike is up to his old tricks again. Not that there isn't plenty of jingoism and ignorance on this side of the pond, but I think you just come on here looking for trouble from the safety of your computer. You keep calling guys who raced at the GP level for years “rookies,” when that label is pure foolishness. Yes, if every race was held in Lommel, Herlings and Cairoli would be the greatest! Last I knew, that's not the case. Searle struggled while here, as did (does) Rattray. Roczen had all three top Americans in the 250s beating him weekly last year (as did Musquin). They’ll get better, but they both have years of professional experience by now. I'm all for the top riders around the world racing together, but take off your "Euro-colored" glasses before you watch.

@Adam Wheeler; Thanks for the update on Herlings medical status, and his upcoming challenge in Qatar. It does not surprise me, (though I am pleased he is not badly damaged), with his gamesmanship antics. It is not the first time he has played that card to an unsuspecting audience, or worse yet, his other gate-mates.
With Tommy Searle no longer around to keep him in check as he did last year, and he did, I wonder if anyone can, and will step up and make him, "Cry Uncle." Whaaaaa!

@casey, where in the Americas do people talk like that? I will wager this, a friendly bet, say $100.00 U.S. that can be resolved through a paypal transaction. If hero Herlings finds himself over here, which I doubt, why would he want to come over and be battling for a top five, when he can be a Hero in Europe. Nobody mentions his lap times at any other facility, we all know he hauls ass in the sand, so what, one surface specialist sounds like to me.

With the attitude that kid shows, I'm surprised so many people are speaking highly of him.

I am just stating that if (those people) think lapping the field at Lommel was a fluke, maybe those doubters (if you are one) maybe they should educate themselves before they doubt just because they have no facts to back up their doubt and/or hate based acquisitions.

@mx14bk PS Herlings has numerous times (because you obviously haven't heard) has high hopes of coming to the states to prove his worth here. Because he has proven his worth in the FIM World MXGP rankings by his 2nd and now Ist place positioning's in the championship. Or do you not include the Motocross de Nations as a World Caliber event. What would you call that competition, if not World Caliber.

You my friend have obviously money to burn with NO odds to base your wager, or any fact based logic period. I would never take that bet, in a million years. You haven't heard, read or otherwise understood he has admitted he wants to come here. Just because he has stated repeatedly he would like to come over here and race Americas finest, and they are fine, don't get me wrong, as I have my American favorites, I (think) he may not financially be able to finance the entire years to make the commitment. As stated here, he is a lad of humble means financially. Red Bull/KTM can commit to some support, but it may not be enough to get him here. We'll see, but keep you money for a safer bet, would be my recommendation.
I just have a problem with haters period. Especially when their hate is based on no merit, other than just to hate. I hope you are not one of them. All due respect, Man.

@CrossRut; The PR was about a 17 year old Dutch 2012-2013 FIM MXGP World Champion addressing the fact that his medical condition after a mid-week crash was not going to keep him from entering the inaugural Qatar 2013 GP.
And after reading a half dozen or so basically hate-mail, anti-Euro comments about how Herlings was no match for the US Nationals. I decided I would politely refresh (those) individuals who's memory had conveniently been misplaced, that the same 17 year old kid, who is obviously not worthy of coming to America (in their eyes), had most recently just lapped the field at the 2012 MXdN (twice) and that it just might (not) have been a fluke.
And that just maybe, the kid has something to offer those doubters (again) as their short sided memories and blinders get in the way of reality, sometimes.
Or not... It's all just speculation!
No worries, go back to bed!
