Chicopee, MA - Velocity 3 Yamaha, a team that came together only weeks before the opening round of Supercross, has released Kyle Chisholm from his contract.
During the time V3R experienced financial strains, as expected sponsors monies had not materialized, Kyle Chisholm was presented with an opportunity to change teams while remaining on his preferred, and accustomed, YZ450F. Kyle has been nothing short of a true professional for V3R and the team honored his request for release. Kyle will join the JGRMX team for the SX season in place of the injured Josh Grant. We know Kyle will have a great season and wish him the best.
Velocity 3 Yamaha will continue its racing efforts (a decision to fill Kyle’s spot has not be determined) and will have their full support behind Bobby Kiniry. Bobby Kiniry is having his best Supercross season; making the main in all but one round. Kiniry has been up front at times throughout the season and the New Yorker brings a level of personal determination that surely will improve his results as the series shifts to East Coast.
V3R thanks those supporters of the team including Yamaha Motor Corporation, Yamalube, GYTR, ENZO, DRD, Dunlop, Costa Rica Unlimited, Ironclad, Ride Engineering, Moto-Master, Twin Air, Athena, Cycra, DID, Dubya, ICW, 360 Unlimited, Pro Taper, Supersprox, Works Connection, Matrix, Hinson, Motoseat, Renagade Fuel, STS Graphics, and Freegun Underwear.

LET him out of a contract? Doubtful he was actually receiving a salary he could live on. The problem with our beloved sport is that there are a dozen or two RIDERS, WORLDWIDE, making a real payday on this sport, and the very next level competitors are riding virtually for FREE. ALL competitors of each event are risking life and limb just to be in the show. Once there is parity for the profits in this PROFITABLE sport, it can get to the next level. IMO, its not going to grow until then.... I, regrettably doubt, that the "powers that be", are going to do the right thing and share some $$$ and make it worthwhile for the 30+ competitors in each class that make the SHOW, but are not Factory guys and/or on the podium. There's more $$$ for "non winners" in dirt car racing in every backwoods county in this country. This should be an elite sport, and there should be more money that goes to the rest of the competitors. PERIOD.
According to MXAonline 10 place Matt Goerke has made $16,940 in purse money from the first seven races this year.Eighth place James Stewart has made $18,290.If you are the last rider[40th place] that mikes the night show in the 450 class you $965.So if you are a rider that makes the nite show everyweek an yet never make a main then you get 965 x17 races.
I hear what you're saying mmracer62, but these young men know what they're in for. A friend of mine used to race some supercrosses and all the nationals back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Qualified for them all, didn't make didly squat. Now, he's 33 and he races a lot of local and regional stuff still in the pro classes and in the vet pro classes. He's a plumber; he makes about $40,000 a year. You know what he made last year in motocross doing all that local stuff? Over $20,000. Cash…he reports what he wants to. Just racing local stuff. That's pretty good if you ask me, and of course 90% of his 'stuff' is all paid for. These kids have delusions of grandeur I guess. My advice, unless you're really killing it or are on the cusp of 'making it' stay local and get paid. Also, $965 bucks for making the night program...pretty damn good. Less than ten years ago it was more like $200. The sport will never be NASCAR but it's getting marginally better for the privateers. They just need to make smart decisions.
Just so we're clear, "making" $965 isn't what said riders net when considering entry fees and other overhead expenses.
Yes you are all correct what the riders make. now they make a big deal out of the Monster Energy Cup. Naw compare todays dollars with what some of the Outlaw races paid such as the St Peter Mo Fall championship race $10,000 between 3 classes, the 1973 Texas Leusure Chair race.$5,000 3 classes. and ther were several more. Yes they need to up the payout for the racers. Back then at some races you could make some money if you raced those but they were not that often. Still local races paid enough for your gas entry fee and some living expenses.
I can't beleave that in the toughest series on the planet that has huge crowds growing ratings and 965 bucks really there is no way a privateer can live on that someone is making money if this sport and the manufactures are having a tough time I get that but there has to be better purse money !
Same goes for large corporations now. In the 70s, CEOs were making I believe an example would be CEO of Exxon was making 500,000$ annually while a ground worker was making 15$/ hour. Now days, a CEO makes 150 million while a ground worker makes 40$/ hour. Doesn't really seem fair does it?
We have somehow lost control of our pay scales
I love Mx and SX, but the sport has taken a turn for the worse, not the racing but the sport. The bikes are more expensive and heavier and more dangerous. The safety is pathetic, i see boats and trucks and metal barriers very close to the track. There is nothing but those lame neck braces to protect the riders. Watch, The Killer Years, about when F1 racing was deadly and no one did anything, until a big tragedy. I for one will not let my kid race. I hope he rides like Ricky Fowler and golfs like him too, instead of riding like McGrath and golfing like him.
BTW, 2013 PGA money list #100 Bob Estes earned $1,009,769.40 in prize money alone. You would have to win 83 450 supercross races to win that amount of prize money. What do you think the AMA #100 rider earns. I bet it is close to 0, since he is a privateer.
I love to watch SX, but the riders are getting a raw deal in regards to money and safety.
