James Stewart Has Torn ACL | Will Race
Thursday, January 17, 2013 | 4:30 PM
Yoshimura Suzuki's James Stewart confirmed today to Racer X Films at the Anaheim 2 press conference that an MRI earlier this week revealed that he has a torn ACL. Stewart suffered the injury in practice at the Anaheim opener. Stewart said he has been riding cautiously because the extent of the injury was unknown, but now that the extent of the injury is known, he will begin riding more aggressively. Again, Stewart will continue to race despite the ACL injury. Stay tuned to Racer X Online for the full interview with Stewart later today.

Well, all you goons who said it was just another "excuse," are wrong again....
Get it fixed Stewie--unless you dont want to race outdoors.. Which might be his plan.. If thats the case I'm glad he is racing still.. But its only a matter of time before he plants the foot and it pops out if its torn completely.. It might not be torn all the way.. RV raced with this for a while and it popped out on him in a practice I think at the beginning of the outdoor season one year.. It will have to be fixed eventually..
@bd200 ,, The thing is, there is more money at steak in SX, than MX...
Stay pinned Bubba! Sh!tchyeah!
Its all about the money huh?? How much is enough?? Its supposed to be about the love of the sport.. RC sat out in supercross just so he could race the outdoors.. I dont think Stewie would lose any money not racing supercross, unless you are thinking he wins the title and gets the incentives.. I dont think he is paid on a race by race basis..
And I guess you were wrong saying Stewie would "come alive" this weekend.. But if its not bad, he still may..
Go get um J$7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BArRk30QKM8
Not good JS! Huge amount of respect that he's still riding though, lets hope he can either finish the season, it just isn't the same without him!
As long as no long term damage occurs as a result..

Ok I admit after this weekend he will quit..
@bd200,, He is hired by Suzuki to race.. If he can race, then he will race... Yeah, "the love of the sport," but,, its still his job to race..
@bd200 Not at all!!! After signing with suzuki he did not receive a check from Suzuki until this year, which includes racing outdoors with NO PAY. He doesn't need the $, he could retire right now just off of his endorsement deals.
JS needs to get Pastrana as a riding coach for riding without an ACL.
hopefully he goes top 5 at A2.
If he cant ride 100% why even show up ? the first wash out or tip over he has it will be end of the season . do knee braces even do anything ? why do riders wear them ? i tore my acl twice and was wearing cti2 braces ! i guess there just supposed to keep your leg below the knee from flying off into the crowd!
@bd200. If he got acl surgery now then he would be out for multiple outdoor rounds. He did it in 2008 but he's 5 years older and every recovery is different.
JS just wrote a fat check for his new gear line SEVEN. JS is the only SEVEN wearing rider in AMA SX no #7 means no advertising for SEVEN. Bad deal for sure.
I totally commend James for pushing through the pain. I think he is doing it for the fans and sponsors. But I don't think it's the smartest move. Lets say he puts a smile on his face and shows up the James he became on the Zook, gets in the lead in points with only a race or 2 and hurts it to bad to race. Then he will miss outdoors and its a lose, lose situation. I vote go under the knife ASAP and come back strong for outdoors and maybe des nations. Jus sayin!
@factory1,, There are A LOT of guys riding that are not 100%.. Been that way for as long as MX/SX started..
And we all know that ANYTHING can happen in this series,,,, so why not ride.. RV, CR, RD, JB, TC, etc etc could all get hurt.. Who knows...
He gave up almost 7 figures to start his own gear co, It is about the love of the sport
I raced with a torn ACL. It can be done but it does afect ya some.
he might be pooched
riding sore or bruised or even a small fracture is ALOT different than riding with a torn ACL ! i tryed to ride with a torn acl and its crazy, your lower leg will keep popping in and out and cause more damage. if its just a slight tear maybe it will be ok but if its completly torn he will NOT finish the series.
He's right: whether he keeps riding or not, some guys will continue to disrespect him. That's what haters do. Truth is, he's fast enough to ride top 5 or 6th with a bad knee. He beat RD5 last week. That tells you why he's still out there. Heck, when you can beat 80% of the field with a bum knee - why not?
"Stewart said he has been riding cautiously because the extent of the injury was unknown, but now that the extent of the injury is known, he will begin riding more aggressively."
No big deal, just tore my ACL. Now that I know its nothing serious I'll beat more than just 12 of the best riders on the planet.
Now that is a JS7 attitude if I've ever seen one.
And yes, ACL injuries do improve over time - most of the time. Unless he stuffs it again. Either way, the racing is better when he's out there. So all of us benefit from that.
What sucks is, he will most likely miss the Nationals...
Web told him to show up go thru the motions sign autographs hand out sticker and kiss lil dogs if he wants to get that Obama money ! LOL
What a walk on the plank that decision was to start Seven. There are so many damn gear companies and Seven looks like a complete bite from Shift anyway.
To start something and be successful you need to really think outside the box. Simple, cool looking, cheap and very effective. Rich Taylor creating EKS Goggles is the perfect example of making a product in a niche market successful.
I'm glad he's sticking to it with SX. That'll be a much better payoff finacially and physically than switching the focus to outdoor. Sure, he'll be riding the remaining rounds in pain, but they're not 30+2 going full throttle.
@BILLC.. If you think he is "giving up" 7 figures to start his own gear design you are retarded.. I would be shocked if he was getting 7 figures in this economy from Answer anyway.. But either way he will make 3 times that for his own gear.. That move IS ABOUT THE MONEY.....
I love how all the keyboard jockeys thing they know how much Stewart gets from his contracts and they are structured... There isnt a guy on here who has any idea how his contracts work and how much money its for..
Maybe he is racing supercross and finishing so he can get it fixed and sit out the Nationals.. He doesnt like those as much as supercross anyway.. That is a good idea to keep the sponsers happy..
I rode snocross andmotocross for almost three years with a severed acl because I didn't know it was gone. Wondered why it felt like it hyperextended easily, would be sore for a week and be better after that and this was with no knee braces. Wasn't until this nov that I jacked it real good on the bike that I figured out the acl had been severed along with the new tears. I think its mostly a mental thing and if he can block it out he should do pretty well.
therealmofo, he did give up a 6-7 figure deal to pursue his own gear company - it was said in an interview.
therealmofo I never heard someone talk as much crap as you. Your more full of crap than an Eelephant with no butt hole!!
cpprunner17 .....Don't confuse therealmofo with facts!! he know EVERYTHING and will call you names if he "thinks" you are wrong....Sad little fellow he is.
These threads never end. You cant win either way if youre James Stewart.
James has already "won" just by livin the dream as one of the elites.
Perry Arnold
I want to taste that chick ! LOL !
"money at steak" steak?
The dumbing down of America is at stake!
Does ayone really believe he did this at round 1? Happened before the season even started and he knows it.
Man that sucks for James! There really is no option as he wouldn't be able to get it fixed and be 100% ready for outdoors. Going to put a crimp in the weekday riding and training too, but thrilled to see he plans to go for it! Who is this guy?? Go James.
Does it really matter when it happened @pizza?
DAMN MAn stop the HATING!!!! Already. Let the guy be. Lets enjoy some unbiased racing for once. Barcia is killing it right now and I hope Millsaps continues to carry the torchafter A2.
@therealmofo - maybe if you opened up a magazine everyonce in a while you would understand what BillC meant. Answer offered him almost 7 figures to run their gear. He gave that up to start his own business. It's not easy starting a business. I'm sure he will be very successful with it but it will take alot of time and money do get things going......
He can still ride wearing a functional ACL brace. ACL reconstruction is only performed to reduce chances of early onset of arthritis to knee by restoring the stability and lessening the shear of cartilage. Given his age yes he should have ACL reconstuction. Is it elective yes. Can he do more damage if not repaired immediately yes but only to cartilage and meniscus. He can have it done at end of season which I will suspect he will do. If he didn't have his own money on the line for his clothing company he would be out but for once he put up the cash and has to ride it out. Question is why he waited so long for MRI? I think he had it done earlier and had to release it when Ralph Shaheen pinned him down on it this past weekend when he gave that vague BS answer.
During the Last PulpMX show, Stewart gave a interview, and he said very clear.
´´My knee injury is tuff, and occasionally i will have to make a surgery.
But i dont want to use that as excuse. I´ll fight trough.´´
I figure he had a torn ACL them....
Later JT asked matthes what JS said. and Steve just neglected the hole JS7 statement and just aswer JT he told them nothing new. Maybe to them or inside people already knew. But for the main public that was the first time he admitted he had a major injury.
Poor job as a reported Steve... Bad....very bad.......
@BILLC--You wrote "He gave up almost 7 figures to start his own gear company, it is about love for the sport" My issue is, starting his own gear company isnt about love of anything except money.. He can make money from that for years.. If you dont see that you are a fool.. that was my point.. I didnt say his contract wasnt that big, I said I would be surprised because of the economy.. Sorry if I dont read every Stewart interview like a schoolgirl with a crush like some of you..
And for you to accuse anyone of being a know-it-all is the pot calling the kettle black.. You jump into every conversation with your opinions constantly spouting off like you are Mr. Information.. mostly making yourself look like a fool..
"Gentlemen, we can rebuild him, we have the technology. We have the capability to make the worlds first Bionic man. JS7 will be that man. Better than he was before. Better. Stronger. Faster.". If he was still riding for Yamaha, they would make a robotic knee for him.................
thing is the knee is unstable. it will be prone to pop out of joint, or do further damage to other ligaments. he won't last 3 races.
It's a classic case of cry wolf. You cry wolf so many times, people have a hard time believing you. The wrist and the knee are legitimate concerns. It's really unfortunate and I'm sorry to hear it happen.
lol you guys don't really believe this BS.....its to get fans back so people think , thiis guy has heart he's gunna race injured!! BLa BLa BLa! oh my god , he racing injured!
I CALL BS, I WOULD NOT BELEIVE!
But i do hope james kicks some ass and at least makes the podium!!
You can definitely tell the pressure of not performing is getting to him, but I hope this is a wise decision for his future.
webb wont let james lay around on the couch eatin sandwiches and walking up paris runways showin off his new gear
Off topic, but whatever happened to DENNIS JONAN? Somehow I got some junk mail asking if I know him (which I don't).
Anyway, I'm just thinkin about him and the promise and talent he displayed, only for him to slip away seemingly unnoticed.... ???
to me he should keep riding cautiously i wouldnt want to injure it more i tore or pulled a muscle im my groin once and i could barely walk
So hes gonna race Supercross with a torn ACL interesting and im just gonna take a wild guess and say IF he even finishes the season the next article we see after Vegas will be......Stewart OUT of Lucas Oil MX Nationals....lol anyone besides a hardcore Stewart fan probably knows that is gonna happen
therealmofo, YES you did say it. "you are retarded.. I would be shocked if he was getting 7 figures in this economy from Answer anyway.. "
.wrong again you are!!
I have had my share of injuries, for sure. But, as far as I know, I have never had the ACL injury. What puzzles me, a bit, on this one, is his right knee is hurt, but he seems to have no problem kickstarting the bike. Help me out here. Is that normal? To me, that seems strange. But, like I say, I have never had that type of injury. I certainly hope he can stay around this year, and provide some good entertainment, but also hope he thinks of his own future, and makes the right choice. A season is short when compared to the rest of your life...
If Stewart is truly invested that deep in his new 7 gear company, he pretty much HAS to race. A person will worker harder for themselves, than they will anyone else.
He now has to watch out for himself, financially, because his results directly affect his pocketbook (mean he can take a loss) now that he is in business.
I still think he can win the title.. Stewart is a born racer and still the fastest rider. If he wants to hit the afterburner, nobody can keep up.
I for one i'm happy to see him in the mix hope he lasted the whole series.
Just for the record they said the ACL is torn. That could be a 1/4 torn it could be 3/4 torn there is a big difference between the 2. I had a MRI on my knee 5 years ago and the ACL is torn 50% Doc ask what I do for activities, (hockey, snowboard, dirtbike, mountian bike and what ever else comes up) his opinion was there is no sense replacing it unless it tears all the way. It doesn't hurt that much and actually hurts the most when I ride the snowmobile. so my point is JS isn't going to tell how bad it really is until he decides to get it fixed.
BillC back to your question about what I was riding up in maine it was my Trusty hopped up XR250 If you you want the full story go back to Lap times.
Bucky394 I shared you thought about Kicking over the big Zook. Which leeds me to believe it's not to bad. just my opinion.
@BILLC, I did not say he wasnt getting that much.. I said "I WOULD BE SHOCKED" If he was getting that.. I never said "He is not getting it" You are such an idiot..and a hypocrite, because you do the same all the time..
@ rickamatuzio
very fast for sure...but unfortunately when he 'hits the afterburner' he usual has the wrong launch code entered..
something just doesnt sound right to me....he didnt get the MRI the week after the injury?! and why would he say he's gonna race more agressive now that he knows its torn?
But yes, he can race with a slight tear. Ive done it to both my knees and cant afford to get it fixed, so i just keep ridin.
I read a post that said RV may be over-riding in desperation (like Stewart) I hope thats not the case! He just needs to calm down, breathe, and ride like he knows he can. Dungey and Reed either one can win this title just on consistancy.
Therealmofo back peddle all you want but when someone says
."you are retarded.. I would be shocked if he was getting 7 figures in this economy from Answer anyway.. "
.That pretty much say I don't believe it.
.Either way I could not care less what you think of me cuz anyone who can't talk about something without calling someone Retarded or an Idiot is such a low life I should not be wateing my time with them.
Bucky when i tore my ACL in the first turn at Southwick it felt like my leg got torn off it hurt so bad, worst pain I think I ever felt. But the pain level dropped real fast. I actuly rapped it up real tight and raced the second moto cus I was high up in the points. The next day is when the swelling started. By the end of the day it was twice the size of my other knee!! But like others have said it is dif for everyone as far as pain and swelling. I have a Very high tolarence for pain and like I said it was bad!!
JaminGeorge I read that. What sled do you ride?
PS. mine was a full tear. 100%
BillC its a 05 Artic Cat snopro 700 its not pretty but runs mint.
Guy people,Thought I would have a say. I have been unable to even sit in my puter chair for a while due to my right knee and gout in my ankle.. Finnally made it to to the doc late Wed and Doc drained at leas 1/2 cup or more fluiid out of my right knee. Dont really know for sure but my friend said he drained more that 10 syrenges full of fluid. Yes I have tore up my knees many times and refused to have surgery. I sure have been paying for it though in the last several years. I just wanted to keep trying to race instead of going under the knife. Also I have not raced since 97 i think it was? I know I have went to the starting line on crutches and had to have someon start my bike so I could race. Got pretty good at keeping my feet on the pegs at all times also!
PS: That was supposed to start out as Hey People not Guy People????? Yallknow I cant type worth a toot anyhow.
@BILLC, I am not backpeddling, read my post its exactly what I said.. And if you think Stewart "gave up" that deal for the love of the sport you are retarded.. He gave that up to start his own clothing line, smart in my opinion, he is cashing in on his fame, that he earned, and will make a ton of money at it.. But he isnt sacrificing anything for the love of nothing but money.. Smart move for sure.. Hope it works out.. But you just like to start sh!t I think.. And dont even start with the name calling crap you are as bad or worse than anyone.. Hypocrite right there..
trmf: You seem obsessed with JS7. Is there a reason for that? I don't think that is good for you. Try to get out more.
BillC- WTF?
I raced with a torn ACL. It can be done but it does afect ya some
I'm sure your level is much slower than James'..........You are on here talking crap
all the time and most of it is crap! Is this all you do?
OMG!?!?
I can't believe you guys are actually falling for this crap... AGAIN!!!
There is nothing wrong with JS, other than his head! He's not "hurt".
It's that damn yellow bike - so ill handling - everyone knows that.
He can't WIN on that ill handling yellow bike. It's only built for tall guys (like Millsaps) to ride well... I mean, come on, look at Alessi for God sake!
Am I really the only one that has noticed that he lawn darts that thing EVEN MORE than the past two (blue, and green before that) bikes that he crashed... er, I mean tried to race?! And that's a hard task to accomplish... for anyone.
To blame any of this on an "injury"... That's horrible!
Clearly it's a bike problem: IT MUST BE THE BIKE, MAN!
Therealmofo, Yes I have called people names but not untill they do it first.
gfd971 ......Ummmmmmmmmmmm....what?
Children, don't any of you have to be a little productive to support fairness in our country?
I don't for 10 minutes so......
The difference between a six figure deal and a seven figure deal is the difference of an order of magnitude.
I hope you are all a little more accurate with the zeros during your own salary discussions.
I say that if JS7 tears his other ACL, then Dungey might podium on Sat.
Absolute legend!
The difference between a six figure deal and a seven figure deal could be as small as a penny.
.$999,999.99
.$1,000,000.00
it's still funny how people bag on James but he continues to get the most comments of anyone in the series, still brings in the biggest follow in racing! Even negative attention is as they say "attention", you haters are increasing his stock, because he is always on your mind haha! Gotta love haters... they definitely keep the JS7 relevant, whether they will admit it or not! if he wasn't relevant then, people with a little common sense who truly cared nothing for this man would not care what he did because they would pay him "no attention"! Might have to let that one simmer for a while... before you get it!
all you guys on here are a big part of MX and are all very interesting , i love it!!! I don't think James will take any performance vitamin enhancers like i think wham bam is, no names mentioned...so I believe that will make it harder for James... who is a true natural, in my opinion, look how calm the guy is....i don't know....i just want him to beat that little spaz! that is your mission James! DO IT!
The guy still cant catch a brake, get off the P.O.S. yamaha and this happens, sets the fastest qualifyer and wins his heat getting just enough lead and takes it easy the last lap thank god for barcia and canard if stewart is unable to mix it up, because is just as much fun to watch as stewart, im thinking villopoto dont like him to much, not much of a honda fan but everyone thinks RV is the next big thing, bet money kawasaki kicks him out the bus like they did james eventually, thought it was kind of funny and new james just didnt tweak his knee because he was getting beat by reed, weimer, dungey and millsapps, my wife works with one of the best ortho surgeon in dallas and that one hell of a painfull injury to race on much less walk on. My money is on Barcia hes a Bradshaw rookie year and a McGrath It Showtime rolled into one. The only thing thats going to beat barcia is hes a lot like stewart he lays it out there.
Hey does anyone know where I left the jam?
It's a long shot I know
@canadienMXfan--Now you accuse Barcia of taking PED's because it is in the news now?? Really? You dont like the kid so he must be cheating??? Thats kind of a childish thing to say isnt it..and of course YOUR guy is clean.. The kid is young and hyper, and has worked his as$ off to get ready for the supercross season and its paying off and a guy like you accuse him of cheating!!! Sad, very sad..
