Monster Energy Cup Track Design Finalized

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 | 2:05 PM

AURORA, Ill. – Feld Motor Sports®, along with 15-time AMA National Champion Ricky Carmichael, finalized the track design for the second-annual Monster Energy Cup at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20.

The 2012 Monster Energy Cup features an all-new track design inspired by Carmichael. The Carmichael-inspired track design will consist of supercross and motocross obstacles unlike any other racetrack design in the world.

This year’s all new track design will feature a 200’ banked sweeping turn that will be built up into the stands, a split start consisting of two 11 rider starting gates separated 220’ apart from each other before they converge at the apex of the 300’ start straight inside the stadium and for the first time ever, a joker lane, will be used. The joker lane will consist of deep sand and take the riders out of the track circuit for approximately six seconds before reentering the track. Every rider will be required to use the joker lane one time during each of the three Main Events.

After racing through these sections of the track, fans will be treated to equally exciting racing lanes that are built into the Monster Energy Fan Zone, which is located outside of the stadium. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and any rider that wins all three Main Events will take home $1 million.

“We added all kinds of unique ideas to this year’s track, and I am excited to see how the racing unfolds this year,” said Carmichael. “The most controversial part of this year’s track is – without a doubt – the joker lane. It’s never been used in competition, and this is going to require a lot of strategy.”

“This year we started with a clean slate and created one of the most unique race tracks ever built,” said Todd Jendro, vice president of two-wheel operations, Feld Motor Sports. “Having Ricky Carmichael involved in the design process brings a one-of-a-kind perspective to an event of this magnitude.”

I love everything but the joker lane. Do u know how hard its gonna be on lap 7 when ur in a 3 way battle for 1st to remember, oh yeah ive gotta do this wierd seperate section of the track. Dungey Reed and Poto are gonna be thinkin of ways to pass the guy infront of them in the next corner, not thinking about taking a slower line in the corner. It will be really cool to watch dont get me wrong but from a riders standpoint Id hate it.

Not a fan of the Split Start or Joker Lane, messes with the integrity of the sport, then again this is Vegas and the MEC, it'll be interesting at least.

I wonder if they'll actually put enough dirt down this time? Instead of making the competitors ride on plywood like last year.

Having said that, I'm glad they're doing this event. Track design looks awesome, but there needs to be more dirt and more base dirt underneath.

I love it ,,,the whole track looks great to me with passing options..Last year turned into a one lined track for most sections..The joker lane is awesome....I figure the top 5 guys going on different laps and exiting and entering the section in and out of the battle will be great....IMO the fans see better racing if someone does not win the million...sounds bad..but I am coming to see tight crazy racing and multiple moto winners are a bi-product of that...RV2 dominated last year and it was boring....

Only problem with the joker lane is, who is going to do it right off the bat and put themselves down 6 seconds to everyone else creating a need to pass peopl? I think most everyone will wait until they have to use it, unless they have a gigantic lead and can afford the 6 seconds. I do like it though. Will be interesting to see if the leader pulls in and if in a close race, does 2nd or 3rd wait or follow him in?

What happens if there is a crash or yellow flaggs or a med flag in this section it will screw that section for a rider !
