Unadilla 450 Moto 1 Report

Saturday, August 18, 2012 | 1:30 PM

As the early morning fog slowly rolled its way over the picturesque hillside of Unadilla, round ten of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship began under pristine conditions in New Berlin, NY. The big news heading into the day was the return of James Stewart, who is back after missing the last three rounds due to a hand/wrist injury.

Stewart was on fire early, taking command of the race after quickly disposing of Michael Byrne and Jake Weimer. But as we have seen from Stewart in the past, he was unable to hang onto the lead after suffering a big get-off early. Weimer would take over the lead, but it was short lived as he suffered a big crash of his own. Weimer was carted off the track and taken to the Asterisk Medical Unit. Weimer’s condition is unknown at this time.

With complete chaos up going on up front, points leader Ryan Dungey was buried in fifth. But Dungey, who needs only 15 points on Mike Alessi to capture his second 450 Lucas Oil Motocross title, was thrown a bone when Alessi went out with a reported mechanical problem.

Bryne jumped out to an early lead over Tickle, Davi Millsaps and Dungey. But like those before him, Burner suffered a big crash and was unable to return to the race. That left Tickle with a golden opportunity to capture his first career 450 moto win. But like we have seen so many times before, Dungey only got stronger as the race went on and was able to take his first lead of the day with 2 laps to go.

Dungey would take the moto one win, moving one step closer to his second 450 outdoor title, with Tickle finishing second. Millsaps would finish third, with Short, Josh Grant, Nico Izzi, Phil Nicoletti, Tyla Rattray, James Stewart and Robby Kiniry rounding out the top 10.

"dungeys turning into a crashoholic".

Yes I'm afraid he's listening to all the critics. He just needs to keep riding HIS race and let everyone else worry about lap times and all the "what ifs"....

Regular crashmatic stewy no matter how long he rests still the same result?

No offense to Dowd, but they're spending way too much time on him during these televised motos. A brief mention would be great, as would be a few shots of him racing. Following him for minutes, and then running a piece on him -- during the last laps of a live moto! -- is taking it too far.

Poor Stewie. Wonder if he'd got back around to his mechanic to see that Dunge was buried in 10th or 12th if he would've backed off a little? And I'd also like to know where the "God is good all the time" little comment came from in his pre-race interview????

That is why I said go read my comments after the first open moto on racerhead! Everone crashed! or just about evreryone. Bad ruts and I hate ruts.

Phil Nicoletti 7th place!! 100% privateer effort.

billpetitt wrote: 2:47pm August 18, 2012

The reason they mentioned Stewart's crash, and not Dungy's, is because Stewart was leading when he crashed and GAVE away the win. Dungy was not leading when he fell and, even with the crash, went on to win the race. Simple.

Now some little known history, Back when Charie Bogat was still racing th e intermidate class. At Tyler when Try Clinfrost was making the tracks. The track made one line because of a small shower after practice, ther was about a 5 innce lip on all corners and even the easy coners. Bogart was railing them just like a monorail. I was riding the open class yes there wee some pretty fast puppies in my clas back then, But what he did on those rut blew my mind, I tried to do it and could not. I know that Wyatt Seals , Ally Semar Matt Bracken and a few others were prttey good and they could not ride the rut like Bogart did that day. Still need to apoligize to Seals for putting him in the pond, sorry dude it judt happened.

1st place was cursed in the 1st moto. The track was BRUTAL, sorry you can't fault Stewart for crashing in that moto almost everybody was hitting the deck, sadly ending some of their seasons. Will there be a full gate for the 2nd moto, hopefully at least three quarter full.

LastBikeRM250 wrote: 2:51pm August 18, 2012

Stewart could use an electric starter on that Suzuki. Lost a lot of time getting it re-fired on the first crash. Still, 9th place coming through most of the pack isn't all that bad. Unadilla is a nasty track this year!

Hope Weimer and Byrne aren't seriously injured. Neither looked good.

Looking forward to more good racing in the 2nd moto.

My stock in Yamaha is on the rise...LOL..sorry Suzuki but Bubba is gonna blame "bike set up" all year everytime he crashes which is alot...You will win races like he did on blue,,,,,but expect some DNF's and look out when he is frusterated and on the mic ....It will be your fault not his own...just saying he personally ruined Yamaha.....well I take that back --stupid fans believing every word Bubba says ruined Yamaha...I still love mine and wont sell it....Loving the entertainment too...

Yammiblues, your stock in Yamaha is not rising! Everyones stock in Stewie is just dropping! We no plenty of people that have been able to ride Zooks with out crashing! Its never been the bike, its all stewart!

Yamaha needs to go back to the old frame and motor set up!

I've posted on here before about the TV coverage, and I've notice the complaints have started to fade, but I've got to agree with WFOldtimer. I don't even know if my local NBC station pre-empted anything, because I don't even try anymore; I just look at the results at the end of the day on whatever website. I understand there's four separate motos, but it's all one race. There's always talk about the NASCAR model, but the only part of the NASCAR model that's left out in any explanations is that they broadcast their four to six hour "races" all on one channel, and people outside of the U.S. can tune into the channels they broadcast on. After reading Racerhead yesterday, DC's opening (where he's usually doing damage control for the sh!tty state of the TV coverage), he basically just told everyone who has a problem with it to go f!ck themselves; that's how it's going to be regardless of what anyone thinks, even if that's what the people who drive the sport and actually care about what's going on in the sport think. I'd love the chance to get arm pump changing channel, but I don't even get NBC Sports in Canada. We do, however, get Speed, which broadcast 90 percent or so of the Supercross races live this year (wherein all the NBC Supercross broadcasts were next day at noon type of deal). Last year, I remember watching all the second motos pretty much same day coverage on Speed, both the 250 and 450's. Why do people have to make things so much more complicated than they have to be? From the outside looking in, it seems that a channel like Speed is ready, willing and able to give the sport the coverage it needs, but yet, the powers that be have to make things complicated in order to pander to an audience that doesn't even care about moto or know what a knobby tire is no matter how many times Emig explains it and Bestwick goes on for the rest of the moto about it. I apologize for the long post, and I post it respectively. I know DC is doing great things for moto, and last time I posted he told me to talk to my service providers, but I'm just a guy who races locally and has no influence over what companies like Bell and Rogers "allow" us to watch, so it only makes sense to post on the website of the magazine that's owned by the powers that be. I know that I posted this more as a rant, but please take it as a suggestion for future broadcasting negotiations. Sorry for the language.
