Your Collection: 1980 Suzuki RS250T

Sunday, May 6, 2012 | 6:00 AM

This weeks collection comes to us from Shawn Ronk.

I have a 1980 Suzuki RS250T.  I found it for $350.  It was the last dirtbike my dad rode on with my brother and I.  I was looking for something to restore, there are so many options, but this one has sentimental reason.  I spent time on ebay, looking and emailing dealers, and using my local dealer to find parts.  I tried to leave as much stock as possible including just touching up the paint instead of a complete repaint.  Of course I replaced the top end with .020 Wiseco.  It was the original top end before I started!  Spent some time with the die grinder on the ports etc, and used Boyesen reeds.  I can go on and on, but I went thru everything and doing the typical upgrades.  Bike runs great and the suspension is fine for just trail riding.  I want to thank Skagit Powersports for helping with parts and displaying my ride!

Nice, I had the RS125. Great trail bike, loads of fun, thought I was gonna be a hare scrambles guy but I didn't like hitting trees.

My buddy bought one of those in '81. It wasn't street legal where we lived, but that didn't stop him. He rode that thing all over town, whenever, and wherever he pleased, never did get pulled over! I nominate that as the most fun bike of all time!

When you celebrate the freedom your dad shared with you on an old machine like this, all fixed up and looking fine, it makes me smile. Remembering your Dad sitting proudly astride the 'zook is the way every real man wants to be remembered - strong, capable and in control. What a way to represent!

Nice job, Shawn. Slightly off topic, what was the difference between the PE250 and the RS250 ? I thought Suzuki's PE175, PE250 was their Enduro line for 1980-81.

Hi humfrey, The RS line was made with the RM250 frame and tank, with the PE engine and suspension. Kind of a hybrid. It made for a good handling play bike.
