"Yoshimura Suzuki to MEC" (Does this mean what we think it means?)

Tuesday, May 1, 2012 | 11:40 AM

There's been a lot of buzz and tweets and more about a possible future union between a certain rider and a certain team. What do you make of the following press release?

AURORA, Ill. Feld Motor Sports® caught up with Yoshimura Suzuki Team Manager Mike Webb to discuss the second-annual Monster Energy Cup at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20. Webb announced today that the Yoshimura Suzuki race team will be lining up at the starting gate at this year’s Monster Energy Cup.

Since joining the Yoshimura Suzuki racing squad in fall of 2010, Webb has been the driving force behind the team’s success. Throughout his tenure managing the highly successful team in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, he and the crew have enjoyed two race wins, 12 podiums and 20 top-10 finishes.

“It’s a really cool race, we definitely enjoy it,” said Webb. “There was a cool energy around the race. The allure for a rider of a $1 million payday is unbelievable. With track last year being a blend of supercross and motocross elements, your setup had to be just right. Luckily, Metty [Brett Metcalfe] rode really well.”

To hear more of Webb’s thoughts on the Monster Energy Cup, watch the video below:

The 2012 Monster Energy Cup features an all-new track design inspired by five-time Supercross Class Champion Ricky Carmichael. The Carmichael-inspired track design will consist of supercross and motocross obstacles unlike any other racetrack design in the world. More than 200’ of the track will be built into the grandstands, and the riders exit the stadium and race through the Monster Energy Fan Zone outside of the stadium and through the pit area before they catapult back into the stadium. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and any rider that wins all three Main Events will take home $1 million.

I heard James signed with 22 Motorsports. But that pissed off Honda so they will be riding factory Husqvarnas now.

I don't get it, they were there last year w/ Metcalfe, so they signed up again, so what?

I'm feeling the same way, I don't see anything even hinting at an additional rider etc. just the same PR that the MEC puts out for every one who signs up.

I think it means that Suzuki and there team will be there, along with all the other teams....something outta nothing...Stewart was IN last year, so was Reed...but then they bowed out.........I thought it was lame last year when there were big announcements about riders entering the MEC... Only one that was worthy of an announcement was Dungey, since he was on the new bike.....the rest were a waste of time.....Now its happening again...." Chizz IN for MEC "....yeah...like he is even remotely a threat .....Just send out a pre-entry list a few weeks before.....heck the Nationals have not even started....some of these guys who are already making a stink and announcing they are " IN the MEC" may not even make it to the line.......

James will be riding for Factory Bultaco for this race only, but if he can 'prove its not the bike' he should get the nod to a full outdoor only contract

REF-man wrote: 1:00pm May 1, 2012

Oh man, the level of comedy on here is just amazing...it's unbelievable how you comics on here keep coming up with THE EXACT SAME FRICKING JOKES over and over and over again!! James riding a Bultaco, or James riding a Husqvarna......so fresh, so original, so damn funny...oh some of you posters (Mustard Dog, prime, czmark) are in the wrong business...you should be full time comedians!! SARC.SARC.SARC.

Profile Picture
tonewall wrote: 1:23pm May 1, 2012

@james ......just line up and ride the damn bike. The guessing 'GAMES' and endless BS are now just old news ...you have one more outdoor season before the new breed hits the 450's ...take advantage of that and all the injurys...ride the bike, stay on two wheels an entire race and you may have some fans return buy the seasons end. Good Luck

Golfyoda wrote: 1:31pm May 1, 2012

@REF-man.....lighten up man. Stewie himself has manifested all this speculation and humerous inuendo by keeping the silence himself!!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever he rides, he rides......We'll all know the truth soon enough.

Me, I thought I saw Stewie working with Gary Jones in order to debut the new (old) AMMEX for this years outdoors...........

I haven't heard anything better from JGR or the Stewie camp........just sayin'

BigR wrote: 1:38pm May 1, 2012

What do you think it mean!!! You really think RC is training for Loretta's? come on guys

Profile Picture
Snooze wrote: 1:55pm May 1, 2012

Anyone knows what a contract means? If according to JGR's contract, there's a code of silence, no one can say anything. Why do you think the JS's announcement will be made after Vegas, last race of SX season?

For all we know, JS could pull the ol' 08 or 09 Kawi and run on his own dime. I know it was in 08 for the perfect season, just not sure if he was running early edition 09 bike. He has all his set-ups from that year of going 24 for 24. If anyone can duplicate his bike set-up from that year, JS will be very happy.

Whatever happens, very cool if JS races Hangtown. We've heard the same thing the last two season's, "See y'all in Hangtown", only to pull out the week prior to the race.

Profile Picture
Golfyoda wrote: 2:11pm May 1, 2012

Hmmmmmm.....just wondering how many fans Stewie has lost this year and last?

Counting my brother, and myself, thats 2...........

Any more out there??? I'm not bashing, just wonder who else has given up on a very fast (now sometimes), talented (still is), committed (it seems only to his reality show) Unbeatable when on (haven't seen it since 2008)

Curious????????? No haters comments please, as that is not the intent of this question. Only yes / no and numbers.

Stewart is a guy that still wins races. He is and remains an important figure in the sport and he is spectacular to watch ride, even when he crashes (2011 Daytona for example).

I commend Stewart for staying in the sport. He could presumably kick back and retire with sufficient funds but he keeps showing up to race even after big crashes. As a guy that races Vet A and rides 3 days a week, I have tremendous respect for his talent and the talent of every rider on the gate of a MX or SX event.

I agree with 'BigR'...The MEC is a no-points, anybody can show up and qualify one-off race. Wouldn't suprise me to see RC and/or Pastrana show up and race for the million : )

@golfyoda, add 1 for not. JS lost my vote when he played cat and mouse with reed during their outdoor rookie season (i think rookie season) very uncool and I am not a reed fan. then the felony arrest but the worse part was ama letting it go unchecked. He's not Ricky Johnson, bob Hannah, David Bailey, RC, MC, but he acts like he is above all.

The other announcements were for riders who would be there. "Josh Grant is doing MEC, Andrew Short is doing MEC, Kyle Chisholm is IN for MEC, Weimer is IN"......none of the releases said Team so and so is IN. I think the point is fairly obvious, why does a one man team (Metcalfe) get referred to in the release as Team Suzuki? With both Chiz and Grant in, they still didn't say Team JWR is IN. Seems the #7 Suzuki won't be under JGR's tent. The rider formerly known as Bubba is IN!

The message board on this website is the only place the percentage of non-fans is high....in the real world at the races they are in the minority.....FACT!! So go ahead and own your little hating corner of cyber-space you loud-mouthed weasels.......come up with all your over the top, dramatic reasons to dislike the guy and us in the real majority (industry included) will continue to want to see one of the most talked about and interesting (and talented) guys to watch race a motorcycle. You really have no effect on anything to do with him or his career like you seem to think you do....you only matter to yourselves and your fellow non-fans!! No biggie though, a little ying to the yang...carry on kids!!

You make being a MX fan...well hard to be. People have opinions, pull your skirt up Alice and deal with it. You make a two year old look like a grown up.

With RV1 publicly announcing he's in for the MEC2012 many of the other riders will avoid that race in fear of being demolished by the Juggernaut !

I bet the fear has already begun to settle into JS7's bones and he'll ignore the race altogether. RD5 got the guts to challenge RV so round-2 RV vs. RD.
I'd like to Redd out there this time. RC can't compete at this level anymore. You guys are dreaming. Pastrana is done with bikes... NASCAR is his future now.

SuzukiBoi_247 wrote: 2:39am May 3, 2012

@mo-tarder duh RC beat him he is the GOAT but RC got his ass handed to him by JS indoors, but smoked JS outdoors cause thats RC forte. As for RV he only won outdoors cause RD gas boiled at wortham texas causing a DNF. Even after that RD caught up in points even after that mishap at southwick too. As for supercross RV only won cause all the top guys got injured, now his retared self injured. JS and RD are gonna gain so much momentum from racing outdoors, that by the time RV heals up. JS and RD will be on a whole other level that he will not be able to even keep up. 2012 MEC results will be JS or RD in first and CR, RV and canard battling for third. Stamp that.
