Windham Out for the Season
Tuesday, April 3, 2012 | 11:45 AMAttempting to qualify for the ,ain event, Windham was in a pitched battle with James Stewart during a heat race when he came off his CRF450 at a high rate of speed. As a result of the accident, Windham dislocated his right shoulder and sustained damage to his left wrist, left thumb and right hip.
"I've definitely got a dislocated shoulder so that ends my season right there," Windham said. "I've had my wrist examined by two doctors; one said it was broken and the other one said it's not. It's very swollen and black and blue so it's hard for them to tell. I'm going to see another specialist (Tuesday) and have an MRI done to see exactly what's up. We just need get it fixed properly.
"I can't move my left thumb at all and my hip hurts. I'm not really sure what's going on with either of them at the moment. I'm basically hurting all over."
The 34-year-old Windham, the oldest competitor on tour, was having another solid season before his accident. He has two podium finishes to his credit and had been a part of the top five all year.
Earlier this season in Atlanta, Windham started his 200th career SX race, joining only Mike LaRocco in passing that particular mark. Now retired from racing, LaRocco is the team manager for GEICO Honda and works closely with Windham.
"It's disappointing," Windham said. "I've been lucky at avoiding big get-offs like the one I had in Houston for the past several years. Staying healthy has been a big part of my career going this long. But even after this one I'm not done. I'll be back for sure."
Windham had no plans of racing this summer's outdoor Motocross schedule and says no one had made an offer for him to contest that series so he'll concentrate on regaining his health and making another run in 2013.
"A big 'thanks' to all the fans who have Tweeted and left messages on Facebook wishing me well," Windham said. "And to all my friends in the industry that have called or e-mailed. It really means a lot to me and my family.
"I'll be at the New Orleans race and we'll try to get out to Vegas for the finals. I want to stay involved and hang out with the fans as much as possible."
Team co-owner Jeff Majkrzak says no plans have been made at this point to fill Windham's seat at the last four races on the SX schedule.

So bummed about this. This season really has gone down the crapper. Get well K Dub, see you next year!
Son of a beandip motherfrito!
I'm so glad I didn't prepurchase tickets for vegas at the start of the season. I'm waiting for JS7 to have the same release.
Can't believe he tried that hard in a heat race. Great to see but stinks he is done.
Now that wild, out of control, Windham won't be a "hazard" to anyone else for the rest of the season. LOL
Even the smooth guys are bailing big this year. He was looking good, too. One more previous winner off the starting gate.
So sad to see this season ending this way...KW is a real class act and deserved better.
My thoughts are he should retire while on top...like now.
He has nothing more to prove,,,hes done it all.Hes a champ in every aspect.
So bummed. My favorite guy to watch for sure. Get well and enjoy your summer K-Dub!
Well there are at least 2 or 3 uninjured riders left in the series but probably not for long
@K-Dub Get Well Soon
This has been a narly season for everyone, but RV.
He is a fan favorite and I am a huge fan of his. Who's going to take over the opening ceremonies "transfer jump"? He will be missed on the track and in the pits. Hoping for a speedy recovery K-Dub!
Just as I predicted before the first race of the season, that the overweight 4-JOKES would ruin the sport by smashing all the top riders to pieces. They suck and don't belong on a SX track period.
For all the talk about Stewart and the Yamaha....the factory CR450F has put a lot of guys on the sidelines: Canard, Short, Reed, Brayton (almost, tough mofo), and now K-dub.
@Mr-Motocross what are you talking about
SECOND time stewart has screwed K-Dub. Vegas now Houston.
@Mr-Motorcross I agree that injuries ruin our sport because it takes away the racing we want to see. Is there any articles out about the danger in 4strokes? I know I broke my leg when I transitions from a 250 2S to 450 4S and I could blame the weight but ultimately it's my fault.
I feel that the riders should get points for the heat races and when they start they should start like F1 and every other motor sport, "Staggered Start with pole position!"This would certainly reduce crashes and injuries, the fast people are racing the fast riders and slower riders aren't getting in the way causing crashes. They do this every where! Hopefully this will be a lesson to the AMA and they will see how their rating drop as fast as their riders.
How is this Stewart's fault? There was no need for him to push that hard in a heat race.
Get well soon kdub. Glad I didn't pull the trigger on the Vegas trip I was planning.
@djpaulone - thats got to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard. lets take supercross and start like Formula1? that is ridiculous.
@hamncheeze the crf took them out? uh no. Canard - gets landed on. Short- gets riddin on. Reed- kicker kicked the back end out.
@Bieberhole69 OK Maybe starting like F1 is taking it too far, but what do you think about getting points for the heat race?
@Bieberhole69 Stewart did nothing to cause the crash that Windham suffered. If you actually watch the race, you will see that Windham scrubbed a little more than he wanted and it resulted in him landing with too much weight on his front tire. He then went over the handlebars and suffered the injuries that he sustained. Dont be ignorant and blame things on people who had nothing to do with it.
Well that SUCKS KDub out!
get better soon
SO GLAD HE SAID HE IS COMING BACK FOR SURE. KW IS A BAD DUDE!
im from South Dakota and one of the coolest things i have ever seen in moto is when KW came off the couch to fill in for outdoors two years and ago and right off the bat yanks a holeshot and leads the dung for the first 16 minutes. Priceless!!!
Bieberhole69...WTF are you talking about?? JS was no where near K-Dub when he screwed up.
KDUB - Class Act, a true professional.Get Well!
DAMIT MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So bummed for KW! The Monster Enery Cup is waaaaaay to long to wait to see him race again!
Bieberhole69... Your an idiot! Bubbles had nothing to do with it.... KW was FEEELLLING IT and had a bad get off. Could happen to anybody and has happened to too many!
I'm thinkin' Kev. was settin' up to pass JS7. As I saw it, he was all over him and gonna get the job done. Up until he went down he had the crowd on their feet as he lost and then gained ground back. It was a typical KW senario. He is just the guy. Never hear anyone talk smack on him. Get well soon so you can catch a few rounds outdoors. Don't think that would suprise anyone. Can't wait to see your return to racing.
NOOO, I wanted to see his transfer live in las vegas. O well :(, get better some Kdub.
Kevin is a true professional, at the race he came out and talked to Erin to let us know what was going on, and now telling the complete situation. you do not get that much information from a lot of riders.
Thank You Mr. Windham for so many years of professionalism, and Hopefully many more!
Dungey's supercross starts record is down the tubes, and now Windham's record of consecutive supercross starts is over, I blame Racerxonline for jynxing both of them!
Best of the best!
K-Dub's has been my favorite rider for a long time, and I always get extra excited on those nights when he looks like he's got a little extra in the tank - and Houston was definitely one of those nights. I was standing up in my living room watching that heat race, and if it was warm enough to have the windows open, my neighbors would have heard me holler for sure when he went down. So bummed. I'll watch the rest of the SX races this season, but not with the same enthusiasm. (Losing Dungey, Reed, Canard, and others hasn't helped.) Get well soon, Kev, and I hope to see you back out there in '13 and beyond!
And btw, I'm no fan of Jimmy Stewart (the rider; the actor was great), but the ignorance and stupidity of people blaming this on him would be astounding if not for the fact that I see it out here all too often. "Fans" like these just make the sport look bad.
This might be crazy, but in other racing sports, they pull the lappers off the track. I wonder how that would hash out with SX?
points for heat races makes sense to me but leave the starts alone! thats one of coolest things about dirt bike racing. can you see staggered starts when racing your buddies? how about the feeling setting on a full gate. at least no one is up my ass if i blow the start? people can even cheat maybe. then what two jumped starts and your out. many restarts.wtf
wow-what a bummer !! K-DUB is the cream of the crop !! He proves that you don't have a 100 point lead in the points race to be THE MOST RESPECTED RIDER EVER !!!! Just seeing the crowd response at the races will give you chills!! Get well K-Dub---see you next year !!
Maybe the dipshit track builders will make an SX track like they should be made...................SLOW AND TECHNICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Windhams injury... BUBBAS FAULT!!!!
Canards injury... BUBBAS FAULT!!!!
Reeds injury... BUBBAS FAULT!!!!
Shorts injury... BUBBAS FAULT!!!!
Dungeys injury... BUBBAS FAULT!!!!
Me typing and spraining my wrist.... BUBBAS FAULT!!!!
On a more serious note I'm happy to hear KW is coming back and the injuries are not more serious. Get well soon my man!!!
Sucks man. i was waiting to see windham smoke JS and RV at Vegas. I really think houston and vegas are suited to Kdub. Neverless, Thanks Kdub for the best heat race of the season. He kept Js honest and i dont know why Js7 ran him high and looked backed and raised his hand on him. Anyone notice that. Js7 was mad at Kdub for no reason.
I think the tracks should be more outdoorsy. Long sand, mud sections, no bowl turns, 1:20 second lap times, sweepers and NO fixing the track up. Let it get all rutted.
@djpaulone points for heat wouldnt be that bad of an idea. maybe go back to the old format?
@Scrub-This - I love the smell of sarcasm in the morning!! LOL
Sucks for KDub and the fans.
Points for heat races? Really? You guys must really be digging hard to find a way to get Stewie back into the points chase since he has won a bunch of heat races but DNF'd too many mains! Yeah! That will help get him back in the chase.......My God that is funny!
How about all the factory rigs stay home for the rest of the season so we can see some good racing! Sad to admit it, but I didn't feel this way when it Dungey out there cleaning up.
Gosh darnit! Does anyone want my tickets for Vegas? Are they even going to have a race that night? I guess maybe a 250 race might have a slight fan interest. The rest is just crap. The AMA really needs to do something about rider safety.
Man, my family wishes you the best for a healthy recovery! What a ride, ashame it ended the way it did, you had him! We wish you and your family the Best, and hope to see you on two wheels again soon! You are missed!!!
