Ryan Dungey OUT for Daytona

Friday, March 9, 2012 | 2:35 PM

- KTM Press Release

Murrieta, CA - KTM Motorsports is saddened to report that Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey will sit out the Daytona Supercross after undergoing surgery this week to repair a broken collarbone.

Dungey, who currently sits second in the series point standings and has collected two Supercross class wins this season, suffered what was initially diagnosed to be a cracked collarbone when he slid out in a turn and landed on his shoulder while practicing at his training facility in Florida prior to the St. Louis Supercross.

Following the crash, Dungey felt sore but was determined to continue vying for his second Supercross title and KTMs first-ever US Supercross Championship. In a heroic effort, he managed to finish runner-up at the St. Louis Supercross. Further evaluation by Dungey’s doctor this week found his collarbone to be broken. Dungey chose to undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon to plate the collarbone in hopes of a healthy return to racing as quickly as possible.

“This is hard for everyone on the team,” remarked Red Bull/KTM Team Manager Roger DeCoster. “Ryan has done an amazing job adapting to a completely new bike this year. Through the process he has won two Supercross races and has finished on the podium at seven of nine races. He was well in the thick of the championship hunt at the midway point in the series.”

DeCoster continued, “It is often heard around the pits that Ryan needs to get more aggressive and tougher on the track; I am guilty of this prediction myself. But after what he accomplished last week racing to a close second with a broken collarbone; my doubts about how tough he is are well and truly gone. We knew he was hurting but we did not realize his injury was that extensive. His gutsy performance in St. Louis and determination to keep racing despite his injury is a testament to his dedication to the team.”

PREDICTION: it will rain cats and dogs, and Villopoto will decide to watch from the stands, and why not? He can afford to spectate given his now massive points lead.

POSTMORTEM: Stewart will win all of the remaining rounds and the series setting off a string of mass suicide events held at stadium events around the country.

What a BUMMER!! It does make last week's ride to second more impressive. Hopefully RD heals up for the outdoors and can bring that toughness and racing intensity on so maybe the Ryan/Ryan spectacular can continue. RV please just back it down now and coast to the SX title and stay healthy for MX (the real races). We don't want to lose another great to injuries plus maybe it will boost JS7 confidence and he'll join the MX2012 chase.

All of these guys saying RV has already won, he was easily in control of the title anyway.. It would have taken a small miracle for him to get beaten by Dungey, but it was possible. But what really sucks in Dungey was at least making it exciting from race to race.. Stewie will get a win here and there.. But is WAAAYYY out of any title chase.. There is no mention how long Dungey will be out, wonder if he makes it back by Indy. He raced with it broken, so he is tough, you never know..

Hey br411, It was you RD fans that kept saying RV was going to crash because he was riding too wild. Well it looks like RD went down the week after he first acquired some new speed. So let this be a lesson in karma, but I am terribly disappointed RD won't be there to get his usual RV whipping.

Daytoma will be a yawner now. There is no way RV gets into a heated battle with JS7 because he simply DOES NOT NEED TO.

As of this info release, he has to be thinking top 4 every race and SX Title number 2 is mine.

Sucks for us.

Yeah, 3rds now, but each week JS7 doesn't win and RV finishes 4th or better, he will be allowed to slide further back.

I honestly don't see how he could not go out and finish second every week very easily. HELL knowing how good, confident and just plain racin MO FO he is, he will probably still win a few more races.

This totally sux, hurry and get well RD!

As far as RV is concerned, he is a racer; he will not LET anyone win. He is also smart enough NOT to take unnecessary risk (witness Daytona last year) and to know he puts himself at risk by not riding his own pace. It will be interesting to see if he can stay motivated, which he must if he is to continue improving his skills. This is probably the worst thing that could happen for RV’s racing skills.
As far as JS7 is concerned, I expected him to win a couple more races this year and this may mean a couple more wins on top of those. He will also crash-out another race or two this year.

@retardctoss, I agree completely, the gate will drop weather your there or not. I think people that say certain riders"Reed" should have those is a bunch of BS.

Claxton...i am not an RD fan, by any means. I am talking about certain people on here that have brought up the asterisk for riders like Reed, and Dungey. But when it comes down to their rider it has no meaning. Even if it was someone else leading the series I would say the same thing because they outlasted the field...but his certain fans would deni it.

Seriously REF-man...............What bogus fairy tale are you trying to come up with? I don't believe in asterisks for anyone, I've defended RD's 2010 season from "the asterisk people" many times. There are no asterisks on titles, the winner of each series was the best in that series, staying healthy is a part of racing. But I'm a good sport, so I'll play along. Is Honda cursed? Reed, Canard, T Hahn, Shorty (or did the KTM boogey man break his elbows at the end of 2011?).. What about Yamaha? Stewart, everyone else.

The article states that Dungey 'cracked' his collarbone and had it plated. The article also states that he will miss Daytona not the rest of the season. Its possible for him to be back by Indy. Two weeks (nearly) is plenty for the screws to take hold, hell the incision will heal enough by then too. If RV wins Daytona that just puts him 48 pts. down and in a good scrap for the remainder of the season with Stewie for 2 nd in the series. It still could be a great season, we have to deal with it cause theres nothing we can do about it. Great effort Ryan & heal FAST.

REF-man, you are funny with the asterisk crap. If there is a time for an asterisk IMO it is as follows:
* You put the Asterisk when nobody (none of the top3) shows up at the start of the season,
* You put an Asterisk when a rider in 4th place in the points wins a championship by default because his 3 rival competitiors ahead of him were forced to leave the series.

With all do respect Mr. DeCoster, there is a HUGE difference between "toughness", determination, heart and "agressiveness".

I would be surprised if anyone thought Dungey didn't have toughness, determination and heart. Conversely, many would agree that he lacks aggressiveness on track especially when it comes to passing is primary competitors.

and this is bad for the outdoors too, RV now has more time to concentrate on prep for a dominant nationals, which if he does not fall outside he could very well flirt with perfection!!!!
this may also improve his supercross skills as well. now he has no need to stay in the main line every lap.
and i also agree that he will not take it easy the rest of the way and will win many

Look at where Dungey was when he was back to back 4ths and then Reed got hurt. People were saying it was going to be a snoozer from then out....... Dungey will be back in a few weeks.

All you 12 yr. old idiots with the "i'd like to thank the man upstairs guy for me getting hurt".takes...remember that when you pick your sorry a*s's up off the ground... preferably the next time "uncle" Jimmy says "put your mini bike up, your mom says its bed time " and you in a fit of new "uncle " rage , pin it and clip the last "uncles" dead mini van sitting on blocks by the trailer which slams you into the pile of moms empty cigarette cartons and vodka bottles , breaking oddly enough your collarbone and jaw , while your sister just home from re-hab , just laughs and scratches some invisible bug looks at you and says , "go git em dungey"

This could mean that the championship is going into Villopoto's direction.
I know that even though Dungey wasn't OUT with an injury, Villopoto will still win the championship. But now people will think they have the excuse to say that Villopoto won the championship only because the main competitors where out. By any means think that. GO VILLOPOTO!!

TONEWALL my man, F' N' A right! That is some creative funny! Shout out 2 U!

ANYBODY who wants to point out Dungey's or anyone elses faith at a time of injury, sounds like a total DOUCHE! Keep it to yourself, save a little face on this board. It simply is not funny!

I guess it would probably be too late for for you to save face though because I am sure you would be the same DOUCHE that repeatedly says stupid S*#T on this board and has lost all respect anyway.

March on RV1!!!!!!!!!

I too, commend Tonewell for that last post. Good job. And I also think (hope) RD is only suffering a minor setback of a race or two. As said before, anything can and will happen and there are a lot of races left. This series could easily take some more strange turns And as far as not watching anymore, I for one, CAN'T not watch! I just gotta know what happens next!

First I believe if you are one of the "i'm not watching the races anymore it will be boring", you are not a true fan-like the rider getting his first few bruises and quits.

Second, as a racer and a fan I hate the injury part of this sport, BUT I love this sport and I still ride after many many broken bone and bruises. I miss every rider that is out due to injury. I have raced in series where my toughest competitor got injured and I really wanted to win with him there.

The good part of where we are is it clearly opens the door for the "best of the rest" to get a taste of the podium and the racing will be every bit as good as All these guye want it even worse. I have really enjoyed watching JB, JW, KW, and many more push and ride hard. I really want JS to get his confidence back, and believe we will see some awesome racing starting tonight. I think we are through with injuries this year, we already got more than our share.

The last 4-5 years have been incredible in the 250 class as I have never seen so many race all out as fast as these guys are now. Tonight I can't wait to see what Rokson, Bogle, Wharton, bring and to see if Cunningham and a few more can step it up.

That sucks a**.
To all the guys that write stuff like "come back fast", I`ve written it in another place before, a broke collarbone can ruin your whole career if it does not heal up properly. Never hurry healing up. It´s not worth it.

Okay for everyone saying Dungey's title in 2010 was just luck, i think we can honestly say if villopoto wins the title this year which he probably will even though i don't like him that would be luck. With stewart 44 points out of the title chase and just with Dungey missing daytona that already puts him at 38 point disadvantage most likely, sick and tired of seeing this redhead villopoto win..

if you insist on being a RV hater these next 3-5 years are gonna be quite miserable for you, if you hate him i sure hope you hated RC and MC as well, there is nothing wrong with a dominant champ when as he said himself "no stone will be left un-turned" hardwork+dedication+BALLS=championships

Injured 450 riders; Dungey, Tedesco, Reed, Byrne, Short, T Hahn, Grant, Canard, Blose, Stroupe, Morais, Hill, And Partridge. Enough is enough, the AMA NEEDS to start implementing safety regulations.

I think its interesting that all you Villopoto fans discredited Dungey for his championship back in 2010, but now that Villopoto is in the same position, suddenly its a different story? I will not sit here and discredit Villopoto, because I believe avoiding injury is just another strategy to winning championships, I'm just sick of this double standard that is set between riders we like and riders we hate.

"Enough is enough, the AMA NEEDS to start implementing safety regulations."

What should they do in detail?

I don't think its cool to wish anyone get injured for the sake of a more exciting season. There is still exciting stuff to watch, Millsaps, K-dub, and Brayton podium battles! some of the best racing is LCQ battles and they are never title contenders.

RD bad to the bone, see ya outdoors. The only challenger left with a chance

to dethrone the champ. It's now a walk in the park for #1. Step it K-Dub!

@ Claxton, you wrote: "It was you RD fans that kept saying RV was going to crash because he was riding too wild. Well it looks like RD went down the week after he first acquired some new speed. So let this be a lesson in karma, but I am terribly disappointed RD won't be there to get his usual RV whipping."

RD went down during practice, not running a race at race speeds. I wonder if you are aware of the fact that RV has crashed plenty of times himself. You act like RV is some untouchable moto-god who only loses when something is misaligned for him or his team, but here are some stats to chew on:

RV = 2011 450 SX Champion*

* Wins title while Dungey has a DNF, and wins title by less points than likely would have been gained had it not been for DNF.

RV = 2011 450 National Champion*

*Wins title while Dungey has a DNF, and wins title by less points than likely would have been gained had it not been for DNF.

RV = (likely) 2012 450 SX Champion*

*Wins title while Dungey has practice crash and is out due to injury.

Go back to 2010 and Dungey was beating RV for well more than half the SX series when RV was injured. Fast forward from 2010 to 2011 and RV has a DNQ because he crashed twice, once while he was all by himself. Note that RV's DNQ was within his control whereas Dungey's DNF wasn't within RD's control.

See the pattern?
