PrintIn a hard fought race, Ryan Dungey held off Ryan Villopoto for the win in front of a packed house in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. Dungey moved around suprise early race leader Cole Seely to get the lead a few laps in, and then held up under big pressure from RV to take his second win of the year. RV didn't get a very good start, and he and Dungey exchanged mistakes down the stretch as they pushed each other to the limit.
James Stewart started way back to get to third, but his charge slowed when a red caution light turned on for a triple jump, forcing him to roll while Dungey and Villopoto jumped. He lost several seconds there and settle for third. Davi Millsaps and Justin Brayton took fourth and fifth.
In Lites, Justin Barcia nailed the holeshot and never looked back. Blake Baggett battled through to second while Justin Bogle made a move on Blake Wharton to take his first career podium.

What a fun race.. I want to know where all the guys are who said Dungey would not get another win?? And who was it that said if Dungey got a good start he can win?? Dungey is as fast as anyone, as long as he doesnt need to pass a bunch of guys..Great to see RV being his same aggressive self, good race all around.
Barcia kicked more tail, showed he is the best rider in that class for sure.. Alll the Barcia haters are hating it..

Congrats to Dungey for his 2nd win, good job. Cole Seely should be very pleased with his ride, great job. I never thought Poto would crack under pressure, from himself. He was going for it, giving it everything he had, but was just making too many mistakes. We all know he will rebound next weeked. Bam Bam rode a good race and looked pretty clean to me.
Agreed arm670, those lights were ON when he went through....they wont touch him on it, but they should....the video doesn't lie!!
Really glad that Dungey got the win. Hopefully he gets a few more to tighten up the points chase towards the end of the season. Bubba still looked like he was pretty mad in the interview.
Hats off to Seely for pulling the holeshot and leading his first race about a borrowed bike. All in all, a great night of racing!

Where are all of the naysayers who said RD has nothing for RV and JS? Pretty sure they all lined up on the gate at the same time.....NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!!! Never count RD out. He will be there at the end. He won't dominate, but he will be there!

Wow, that was a fun race. Guess we can forget about RV riding for a championship and not pushing for wins. Was alot of fun watching him push the limit.
Congrats to RD. He got what he needed..... A good start while RV an JS didn't. I want Poto to defend but I also want the KTM to do well and silence the Nay Sayers

Calling him a leprecaun is just as bad as calling him a red head, its harmless either way. What he did was dangerous, and he should be penalized. It probably wouldn't have even affected his results if he rolled it, but it could have ended the downed riders career. I stand by my point that RV only cares about himself.

I feel they should DQ RV1 or at least dock him like 5 places.The turn before that triple those flashing lights were going off.He did that triple and it look like he went between the down bike and the rider or saftey crew.Before all you Villatards start running you fat mouths.You watch a replay of the main.Nobody said a word about that.Well Carmichael did.He said there was no flashing lights (yes there was) and no redcross.They don't have to have a redcross if those lights are flashing.FELD and the AMA are total bullshit.Somebody could of gotten hurt.

There was lights in the turn before the straight leading up to the triple.You could see it clear as day.He was heading straight for the lights then had to turn.What about in the qualifier.He passed Metcalf on the yellow with Dungey down.Can you pass on a yellow?

The funny thing is that had it been Bubbles pulling that move he would have been considered dangerous to the sport.So I am not sure where you draw the line on that one. I can also see why you liked steel frames becasue the wooden ones wouldn't support tons of fun!
Sounds like a conspiracy! RV should have all his points taken away. Of course he'll probably still win the title.
That's exactly how I was. We must have crossed paths in the early 90's. The way I saw it, the yellow flags were out, before he was on the lip of the triple. The lights may have came on when he was on the take off. Regardless, it was a sketchy situation, but if it was any other rider, I'm sure it would be a much bigger deal. Just like when Reedy had a bike length on RV in Oakland and his line came into RV's line off the triple but everyone saw it as an intentional take out attempt.
Nothing will be done because that team has the entire organization by the balls, but in my opinion, its a matter that should not be easily overlooked. But who are we? Just fans that will never come close to the level that these riders are at.
Great ride by Bogle, podium second time out, Dungey looked really good' he was just chuggin along did not get in hurry to pass Seely then he rode good enough to win tonight, fewer mistakes down the stretch....
I was also very glad JS did not go down today. I think it will be a threeway fight to the end, yes I think and want RV to win, but I think noone is going to just give it to RV, Another great race !
Lets see here my little glass ball says JS wins the next 2 and then RV does another 3 in a row, then rd shine again !!!

Was a great race, it looks like all the seat time on the KTM is adding up to more speed as time goes on. Dungey started racing that bike with very little seat time so he really has nowhere to go but up.
Great ride by Poto, the track looked like it alone would test riders fitness. Then you toss in the mid pack start and it might have been a heavy load for a guy that has been battling the flu.
Way to keep it on two wheels James, the new tires and the suspension tuning seem to have helped out a phenomenal amount.
Last but certainly not least, MAD props to Cole Seely, for his ride on TC's CRF450.

I'm kinda glad RV did jump the triple even if the lights were flashing. Only because people can't say Dungey won because RV "couldn't/didn't jump the triple". At that level(Top 5) racers have Tunnel vision "Winning" I wouldn't expect RV to see that Light Flash in his pref. vision in a millaq sec., there is nothing worse then a race being enflunced by lappers/crashes.

I don't know what it is with Stewart and his starts...he seems to always get a good one in the heats and then midpack in the main. It was great to see stewart actually gain on RV until he tripled when he shouldn't have. Fan or no fan, RV should have been docked a position for that for sure.

Got to give it up for Seely, smooth as silk and no mistakes with the pressure of the fastest riders in the world behind him, would have gotten top five if he didn't get the board to move over. Say thank you Brayton and Millsaps!
Bummer Reed was not there, good to see RD get one, and RV and JS coming hard.

@fred, you can see those flashing lights in between those tuff blocks as clear as day. They were flashing when Ryan came into the corner. Ok here we go with "Flasher Gate". As for TheChosen1, if he saw his mule and tons of fun from the back, the mule gets kicked to the curb.
So. Is it really the 'right thing' you guys are concerned with or the points u'r guys need to make up on him. Call it curiosity.
Seeing as RV almost landed on the guys downed bike I'm presuming he didnt intentionally do it so I'll give him the benefit of doubt and say he either was too focused on his line or was simply committed and it was too late to shut it down when he saw it.
Personally I'd like to see them dock him all 22 points he garnered tonight for a couple of reasons.
1. All you anti-red heads will have nothing to complain about.
2. RV would be really pissed and put an old fashioned beat down on the rest of the series!
When did we find the new race of leprechauns to to be racist about? Calling RV that might be a stereotype, but I really don't think it is racist. Since leprechauns are just a type of fairy in folklore, the race card doesn't work here. I'm gonna stereotpye RV a little more and group him with a few other flying freckles, Jeff Ward and Ricky Carmichael. Are those two great champions leprechauns as well?
KTM- the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, all in one night. Good for Dungey- too bad for Malcolm.

Guys, the lights started flashing just before he jumped the triple and if he saw the lights and hammered on the brakes that could lead to another rider down. I would like to bet if RV knows he jumped it when the lights were on he feels bad. The AMA will make this decision, not you guys.
Since when is being called a Leprauchan an insult? Carmichael was called the Angry Elf. They should definitely penalize Villopoto somehow- remember Scott Champion and Austin Stroupe a few years ago? Rule are rules.

If RV didn't gain any positions or point by jumping the triple, how can you justify taking points away? Fine him and create a fund with that money that supports the medical staff that has to deal with the downed riders. Make it like a swear jar, that goes to a good cause. JS looked good tonight, but he can't be satisfied.Mookie surprised me with his composure during his chat with Erin at the LCQ line after the digger he took in the heat race. Then his series goals vanquished a few seconds later.I can only imagine what the mood is like for the whole Stewart clan.

Really think about it, what do we hear almost every weekend. "The starts are so important/key.", "The Track is one-lined.", "Lappers were an issue."
The format/tracks need to change so you have the top 5-10 guys are racing each other for the whole race. Not buy chance they get good starts.

Windham said he wants to ride another 10 years. Very cool. RD and RV are clearly in a league of their own. Stewart got to 3rd pretty quick and the gap to RV and RD got bigger and bigger (even without the flashing lights).

@tonewall they are replaying the race on Speed right now.The flashing lights were straight in front of him in the turn before the jump.Watch and see for yourself.I'm not the only one that saw this.

i actually own a dvd recorder. i have watched it a few times in slo mo...i don't have the ability to see where he IS LOOKING thru the back of his helmet in the air in the middle of the corner. . If it is found that he broke the rules i'm sure they will notify you. I'm not that interested in something that did'nt really decide the outcome of the race and I'm sure that some one who has a MILLION races under his belt would purposely do to cause injury to someone or himself or cause himself to lose points or get DQ'ed ...you just hate the guy ...i get it. it's gonna be ok......

I don't think anyone is denying the lights were on when he jumped! The question is, did he see them or if he did, was it too late for him to let off the throttle? Not sure if you've been paying attention but the Champ turns the grip on the right harder than most!
I'm with Tonewall, dock him all the points or DQ him from the next round! That will at least make it interesting!

Things happen in a split-second on the track, no need to bash RV for jumping on a red. He didn't do it to cheat or gain any time on Stewart; he was just out there racing.
Congrats to Dunge!!!!!! My favorite rider by far and it's nice to see him win, but you guys know that the RV fanboys have a ready-made excuse: RV was sick the night before. Oh well, the series moves on and we can look forward to some great racing!!!!

it didn't seem like RV had to force the issue in that turn. It seemed like he had RD covered . maybe he thought the lapper was going to be in RD's way. It was awesome to see those guys on the ragged edge.

Seemed kind of desperate from RV but I'm glad. Looks like he wants to win every race when he really doesn't need to win them all. That can only add to the excitement down the stretch.
RV is within a couple of seconds of Dungey at lap 10 and you RV fanboys still can't give credit to Dungey. Unbelievable.

It was yellow lights as RV was jumpimg into the turn. They turned red when he had already committed to the jump. Too close a call for the AMA to penalize him or anyone else in that situation. Let's just appreciate that no one got hurt and we can now look forward to another great race in St. Louis.

I just watched the replay of RV jumping the triple, the lights were flashing yellow when he jumped, AMA rule 4.15 states a rider can pass on a yellow. Red flashing lights the rider has to roll jumps and no passing is allowed, so all you RV haters need to get over it, he didn't do anything wrong or illegal.

rv and js7 got bad starts and dungey in second it took him a lot of time to get around cs on the other hand rv and js7 passed the guy like he wasnt even there thats the only way dungey will get wins with js7 and rv having bad starts even rd5 fans know this he dosent have the speed period i am a huge rv fan and with rd5 beeing the only rv rival (points) im sure at vegas it will be rv on top, js7 rode good
If they were fair, they would dock RD5 and RV2 for jumping and James would get the win. They should be penalized. Everyone knows that.

Who knows Ripdown, most of these guys aren't all that bright. Seems most of them are hormonal 13 year olds that are angry there guy didnt win. Lot of great racing last night, certainly glad to see some new blood making podiums and stepping it up (Bogle-Seely).

@someguy some of us on here want the points to be tightened up between the top three so that our a hole's can be drawn up ever week wondering who is gonna win.I personally don't want to see one guy dominate and run away with it causing a snooz fest for the rest of the SX season.

The old saying was, "When Stewart doesn't crash-he wins." And was usually true, not the case lastnight. Not bagging on Stewart, by any means, this is all good for us as fans we are in for some good racing, even w/o CR22. The boys have definitly " raised the bar". This is good for us. Was thinkin' like everyone else that this could get boring but we were wrong! Would be better if we still had all the riders in the mix, but that, my friends, is racing!
As i've stated before though, i am a RV fan moreso than the others, but i have a alot of respect for damn near all these pros, having riden for years myself (not at the pro level) but i do understand what it takes. The mental, physical and financial commitments.

@bucky394 I'm not sure what race you watched last night but the one I watched Had Js7 catching both RD and RV.JS7 came from even futher back than RV and was catching those guys untill he couldn't jump that triple because of the red lights.There was only a couple of laps left at that point and JS7 race was over at that point he crusied around and got third.Since you didn't see the race or read all the comments I though I would fill you in on what happened.

Hey all you red light whiners, the officials decide who breaks rules not you. If riders won't move over for the blue flag, and cheat on the start by angling bikes then why slow down for anything? Yes we know why you want those points taken away, don't we? So stop your excuse making and fess up to the fact RV is the fastest man on the planet, bar none. Even if they docked RV 15 points he would still win the title, the other guys are not in his league.

Holy crap Preston. Second time in the last week that I agree with you. I've been saying for a while that the SX results are irrelevant for the JGR team. He'll be a gold mine for them when he jumps in a car. May be as early as this summer.

Last night was obviously an exception, rare as of late, but it was an exception none-the-less.

I didn't mention that the boys were "catching like you stated, but when the checkers fell who was first, and who was third? And the red light thing fits right in there with all the other what ifs and the like. Last nights racing was great. A very good show. I saw it like it was and not how it might have been. Not sure what you saw. And as stated before, it is up to the race officials to decide what is what and we will just have to live with it-right or wrong. Great racing-the top three all looked good last night. This is what we want to see!
i think its a little silly to think any rider (especially the fastest guy chasing another fast guy beating him) would be looking up in this situation. why would they place the lights up and not at eye level? we are talking about the guy that didnt even see the checkered flag in the heat race. not to mention when else is a mx rider responsible for looking for a red light during a race? how long have the riders had to get used to this? do the lights work during practice to help the riders get used to them?
The way I see it, most of the Stewart fans are screaming and crying that RV needs points taken away or penalized. Sounds like thier boy needs some help in the points department and they are begging for all the help they can get.
And it also seems to some Stewtards that it is alright to call a white guy a bunch of racist names, but not a black guy. The Firecracker had enough bang to catch the Locomotive, but not enough pop to pass, as a misfire in sand allowed Dungey to chug to his second win of the year. The Gambler's luck on the gate has been bad and that streak continued but the seven was on a roll till the red eye late in the race slowed him up...Can the Locomotive continue to pick up momentum on his steady drive to the championship or will The Firecracker rise above the rest and unleash his explosive speed or will The Gambler's gate luck change so he can quit bluffin and show his hand, and race straight past the other two to a title....Tune in to St Louis ....l
What a fun race to watch, I cant believe all the crying and whining on here after such a great race and a fun season so far. What could anyone have to complain about?? Its terrible so many ONE RIDER RACE FANS OUT THERE..
I am an RV1 fan, and he didnt win, but it was still such a fun race. I guess I am just a race fan more than being a rider fan.

On an unrelated topic. Some time last week you stated you go to Millville every year ? I'm coming down from Canada with my oldest daughter for the Schwann Cup in Blaine. (soccer) It's the week following Spring Creek. I've never been to an AMA National and this may be my one and only chance!

Every year my daughter and I take a friend of mine's (who passed away) son to the races. We also hook up a couple from the Thunder Bay area,every year. So this is up my alley. I have been there alot, just make reservations early, with the mayo clinic in town that is a must... enjoy the area as it is beautiful ...the drive along the stream on the backroads to the track is a must..sounds like bucky can be of more help to ya ...I met Johnnny Martin in OKC at 59th and Douglas years ago,,he was down here riding in feb....i was teaching an atv safty class at the facility and we got to talking ...I envited him up to ride at my track...to my suprise..he and his group showed up a week later...but do to the 40 mph wind that day they only made a few laps and headed back to Minn....any way ...it is a great event to attend ..
@BD200 your very late to the game.We had court on Lightgate on here last night RD RV won in court on here last night.By the way you can pass on a yellow flag.We looked up the rule on here last night.But of course you didn't bother reading the comments before you started running your head.It ends up being that the whiners(me) didn't realize you can jump and pass on yellow.
@ Bucky and BD200 and to the rest of the Villotards on here.I hope that RV1 pulls the holeshot in the main for the nest 9 or 10 SX's and wins by 20 or 30 sec. each race.Then for the next 2 or 3 months we will have one of the most borning supercross seasons ever.Then I hope he does the same in the outdoors turning that to one of the most boring outdoor seasons since the RC days.I hope this happens for you boys.Then the rest of us can say well at least there is next year maybe Reed and Canard can make it interesting next year starting 10 months form now.
This has nothing to do with the waving yellow flag or the flashing yellow lights. The key is when did the red lights at the top of the jump turn on, which was hard to see from the coverage. You are allowed to jump the triple on waving yellow or with flashing yellow lights, its just a caution. It looks like the AMA official was just getting ready to throw the red cross flag, looks like he was trying to spot the leaders and not throw it between them, for obvious reasons, just ask JS, as he got the short end of the stick.
Its too hard to tell when the red light was on going by the TV coverage, the race ticker was in the way and you only see it as Rv is right on the approach to the takeoff. If it is comeing out right then, he should not be penalized. If it was on prior to him on the apprach, then something should be done. Plain and simple.
BD, since there were a few seconds between RD and RV, I highly doubt the red light was on on top of the takeoff, if so then it would have been clearly blatant that RV had jumped on red. I think it was just one of those cases like driving on the street when the yellow light comes on right before the intersection, and you have to slam the brakes to stop or just end up going through on red. And as for JS passing on yellow last week, you ARE allowed to pass on yellow, its the medical flag that you can't pass on. Here is a copy from the AMA rulebook.
b. Warning Flags
1. Yellow Flag:
Waving Yellow Flag: Indicates serious hazard on or near the
track.
• Passing is allowed
• Proceed with extreme caution.
2. Solid Blue Flag :
• Indicates you are about to be overtaken by faster
riders.
• When conditions allow, move out of the fast line.
• Hold your line (don’t ride erratically) and do not
impede the faster riders progress.
• Riders disregarding this flag may be black-flagged at
the discretion of Race Director.
3. White Flag with Red Cross:
In Supercross this flag or a red flashing light may be
displayed at the beginning of a triple jump or a series of
jumps. The riders must roll each jump individually with no
passing and exercise extreme caution until they are past the
area of concern.
OK, now lets move on. Good racing. Congrats RD. Miss Reed already.
BTW, RV made a few mistakes tring to catch RD, does that mean he was riding over his head too that some acused CR of last week?

@RCRDDW-- I dont worry about these childish rookies on here, some of them are nothing more than a one rider fan. NOT racing fans. If thier rider is out, they arent even at or watching the races.. And others are Stewtards, and to them he gets cheated or something else, he never loses "straight up" I dont worry about them. And dont worry, I am kinda an RV1 fan, but enjoy watching Dungey too. And am glad he got a win, just to quiet up the guys saying all week he woulkdnt beat or COULDNT beat RV1 without a crash to RV. Silly, I said last week if he gets a start he is fast enough. I actually do want to see Stewie get up front to and see a 3-way battle. The racing will be great, but not sure if I could stand the attacks on this site if Stewie does run up front again, the Stewtards will come out of the woodwork--LOL!!!!!!

I was there last night and, although I would advise him to step it back a click for the championship's sake, I think I enjoyed watching RV almost wreck 10 or 12 times trying to catch Dungey more than watching Dungey win. He is like a hound that smells blood and won't quit! I WAS actually rooting for Stewie to get up there and mix it up with RV and he was riding great but the Ryans have simply stepped it up the last few years and he can't run them down.
I'll bet RacerX is dying laughing EVERY single week reading these comments. I've never seen such a funny thing in my entire life. A bunch of grown men fighting on the Internet with pre-teen kids over a sport that neither were never good at or never will be good at. Can't wait till next weeks write-up to get some more laughs!!!!

great ride seeley dungey took 9 laps to get him i thimk he is pretty solid(seeley)..good ride dungey start out front he is a major contender with rv and js7 6 th and 10th... dungey will win every time..great race ..like to see heads up all 3 together i would say rv 1st 99% of the time..............will win if he starts in front with dungey and stewy...
