PrintAfter a big crash in Dallas, while running in second, Bel-Ray TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed just confirmed that he has two broken ribs, broken spinous T6, torn ACL and a fractured tib/fib. Below is the official tweet that Reed sent out moments ago.
Well I spent the day in the hospital yesterday here's the damage.. 2 broken ribs, broken spinous T6. Torn ACL and fractured tib fib...

Reed was riding smooth right behind Villopoto and then that happened... Sucked the excitement right out of this season in my eyes. I hope Stewart, Weimer, K-dub, Hanny can make it interesting!

RD5 is still in the mix and only 13 points from RV2.
Man that really sucks, was shaping up to be the best race and series in years. Reed is one tough guy he showed that when he started to get up. Most would have left on a stretcher. Hope for a speedy recovery for one of the class acts of the sport!
Damn it Reedy!! Love having you out there as I am sure Honda did as well. You are the only guy that can make those new Honda look good.
Hope to see you in the out doors. That ACL is likely a 5-7 month depending on which route you go and comfort level on how soon to ride on it.

Yeah this season will be incredibly boring now, Dungey can't find the speed and Stewart likes the ground. Huge bummer, Reed was on another level this year!

That is alot of damage!! That sux man. REED22 is one tuff SOB. Only rider to really challenge the Champ. I thought he was toying with Villo most of the race. With Canard and Reed injured, Stewart having set up problems and Dungey on Orange. The 5 man battle for 2012 just got the final blow to the season. I am really bummed, that race was shaping up to be really good to the final lap. Not really excited for SX class next week with CR22 out. He was the only one I think could of knocked the champ off the Top step.
Wish Bam Bam was on a 450. I bet Honda does too. He looked awesome out there. I think he will bring it in 2013.
All props go to REED! The speed and termination that he was displaying was that of a true professional. I am completely discouraged that he is hurt, as with other racing fans. Reed and Vilopoto gave the fans what they wanted most when it came to bar to bar racing. The rest of season will be interesting to say the least. GET WELL SOON REED!!!!

Wow, that is a lot of damage beyond what I expected. Sorry to hear Chad. The Yogi comment doesn't even need acknowledgement it is so bad. Here's to hoping we see Chad back out there in 2013. In the time being, I would assume it is time to look for a fill-in rider?
Bummed for Reed and the front of the class does look a little boring unless RV has some serious bad luck.
On the flipside, we likely have Cole Seeley and Marvin Musquin racing big bikes this coming weekend, plus 22 Motosports should take my advice and give a bike to Gavin Faith. There should be some awesome battles shaping up for spots behind RV and RD. And JS7 is still capable of pulling off a win streak IF he gets things figured out. Still some good action ahead, just maybe not at the very front of the race. But I think something big will happen to RV at some point, either a mechanical or a crash and this will allow RD to close right in.
That is some sad news! I hope he has full recovery and comes back to us soon.

Been waiting for some news. I was devastated when seeing the crash live. Now it sinks in for real. The reason SX is the most dangerous sport, because every rider is possibly one crash from retirement. As someone with a torn/fixed ACL, you are never the same. It's to bad he was pulled like a sled, if he was just slammed it might be better, looks like the sideways tug for 6 feet did the knee in?
Just got off the phone from cancelling my hotel reservation for Indy. This series will be so boring now. Unfortuantely RV and Reed were the only ones that showed up ready to battle for the championship. #sobummed.
So now Reed can collect on his injury insurance and hire a fill in for the rest of the season and maybe the beginning of Nationals...how about a trade...Mike Gosselaar and 2 million dollars for James Stewart...22 Motorsports would get a rider that could win on a Honda and JGR would get someone running the show that knows something about motorcycles.
Get well soon Reed, you made this season VERY exciting at least until Dallas. Who's gonna step up to challenge RV2, JS7...RD5...Weimer! Don't think anyone can.

I still feel JS will win a few but don't think RV will hang it out to beat him with a 40+point lead. RD needs to really step it up or hope like heck RV has some bad luck too, But RD with a holeshot is still dangerous unless RV starts top 5.
Man, I hate that for Reed. That knee will probably slow his outdoor season down, if it doesn't shut it down altogether. Let's all hope not. Chad, we miss you already.
On the other hand, now would be a great time to consider Regal for an outdoor ride. He could start testing in March and be ready to race for outdoor round 1.

Since every writer from every moto site will be writing their view of this tragedy I thought I'd beat em to the punch. Reed was flying on the track and looked strong enough to pass #2. He came up short on a tricky,rutted triple nose diving into the ground.On slow motion replay you can clearly see him tuck is head out of the way (total life saving instinct displayed) and take the abuse of a body slam. Unfortunately the engine has received throttle in the may-lay and Reed's left boot has become hooked on what looks to be the shift pedal tip? Unexpectedly Chad is yanked and twisted at the same time by the spinning wheel and forward momentum. The end result= Chad Reed is one bad ass dude.
I agree with southernboy, put Regal on that bike for the outdoors.
I highly doubt reed will pay someone to ride his own bike unless it was someone he wanted to help. He would probably let wilson ride it but kawasaki probably wouldnt like that. If he does get a replacement rider it will be someone he knows personally.
Sorry Chad for the sudden hault to your title chances, get healthy and enjoy some family time. You have definitely been on a roll and I was excited for competition that you have provided in this SX season. Heal up and hope that you can give someone deserving an oppurtunity as your replacement for this season. It was just TOO cool to see CR's doing so well. Good Luck.

Maybe Reed could get Tommy Week to ride it? Tommy is already used to the Hondas.
Really wish Reed didn't have the two most epic crash highlights of the last two years. Last year Milliville, This year, Dallas. Would much rather see his highlights being bar to bar for 20 laps with RV, and RD.

I wish Reed a speedy recovery. He is a class guy.
His injury raises an interesting issue. That is the technology for the bike surpassing the human body. Reed is a tough guy and these are serious injuries. RV was injured two seasons ago on a jump out of a left turn with a short run-up to a quad. The bikes are getting way more powerful and suspension so good, guys are doing things today never even dreamed possible in the time of Hannah. Look at how many guys are seriously injured this season.
Since most fans want TwoTwo Motorsports at the races, I'm assuming. Chad please think about putting Ben Townley on your bikes. He deserves a shot on great equipment and while not an Australian at least comes from that part of the world.

@VISTAJIM...I'm a Reed fan as well as Canard, Dean Wilson and KDub. Three of the four won't be there. I'll watch it on tv and put my money towards going Red Bud.
Wow! Blown away, I knew he jacked himself up pretty badly but didn't think there would be that long of a list!? Every year it's something and I said something to that affect a few weeks ago. In every season something happens that changes everything and I think CR22's crash is that thing. I like RD but I don't think he has enough in the tank or scrodum to hang with RV. and I see him as the only viable threat, unless JS7 reels off ten straight or something which of course is not likely. I think it bad for RV too. A lack of weekly pressue can lead to complacency, but by the same token I think RV has enough good people around him to keep that from becoming an issue

I'm surprised the injury list isn't longer than that. I've seen him take some serious hits but that was ugly. I think I sustained injuries just watching it. Speedy recovery, Chad!
Another broken back (T-6). When will more protection become manditory? You guys on this blog have no idea how bad it could have been.
Ive been a huge fan of Reed since he came over from Australia. I think my girlfreind is more bummed than me, she made the comment that she doesnt wanna go to the Indianapolis race now just cause he wont be racing. It would be cool if he tries to get Pourcel to fill in for him, that might also help Pourcel get back racing in the US.

Bad for the sport, fans and worst for cr22. Im no ortho nor do I have his medical team but if the damage is all on one leg the tib fib will need to heal for the rehab needed by the acl repair. May your recovery be full and fast as possible I would rather see a 100% chad in 2013 than not ready in 2012!!! Best wishes you will be missed!!!

reed got a title when james got hurt, dungey got a title when RV got hurt, finally stewart gets a gift, we all know that james passes reed everytime reed get the start we have seen it in the heats and in the mains, if that was james behind R.V. james would of went by, but it would be nice if R.V. had a bad race or two. Stewarts never had a gimmie. sound harsh, remember all the crap james got for riding over his head last year at daytona, he didnt get hurt so no one cared, reed has took so many cheep shots at stewart to many to count and a coulpe last year that didnt help james run for tilte. dungey has noting for stewart niether does wiemer sorry hes got an * next to his title and an * next to his wins, this guy has an unbelivable amount of luck, i thought for sure dungey or weimer were going to take each other out, but no it has to be windam and alessi, all i got to say is dungey had a DNF last year DONT COUNT STEWART OUT he doesnt have to worry about 22 running into him, maybe they should of fined him a few times but A.M.A picks and chooses.
This really sucks, just like mx last year, after Reed crashed it became a 2 man show, now its a one man show. I hope this doesn't mean Reed will retire. The last thing we need is a new domination.

Don't worry Chad's is running a business with TWOTWO He will probably get a replacement rider and none of us will agree with his choice, but he has a better intuition on riders than any of us.

I have never been a big fan of Reed....................till this year. Him & Villo looked like slot cars while the rest of the pack looked like $29.95 radio controlled cars. That is I believe the fastest i have ever seen Reed ride. Only thing that is gonna stop Villo is himself with an injury. Villo looks like RC in his prime, friggin near perfect.
You wait months for the new season to start. You read all the hype of the fab five and how this is going to be a series for the ages. Trey is out before it even starts. Stewie is a no show. Dungey is a solid but distant fourth place guy. Reed goes down in a heap. And that was only seven rounds in. It's tough to be moto fan these days.
I had to double-check the story title and yes it is, Chad Injury Update". Thought it might have been "Bubba 2012 Season What-Ifs" or "Why I hate Dungey", based on the comments.
This makes it tougher for anyone to catch RV. There are less guys that could finish in front of him when he falters.
Happened to I notice at the start that Reed doesn't wear any external chest or neck protection. Not sure what might be on under the jersey. I hope that lack of protection didn't contribute to his back injuries. Of course the torn ACL is probably the one that would keep him off the bike the longest, depending on the severity.
Boy, first Canard, then Short, and Windham, and now Reed.. Those Hondas are just junk, they must handle badly and nobody can get them set up right, it has to be the bike. There are more guys out due to the Honda than any bike out there. They all must need to switch to Kawasaki..
CR22 took a serious hit back in 07 skipping the outdoors and alot of people (including myself ) were dogging him. Since then IMHO he has been the hardest working man in MX/SX and has won legions of fans. It was heartbreaking seeing Chads crash and was a serious blow to the season that was looking so promising. I wish there were but honestly don't think that there is a replacement rider worthy of carrying the 22 Motorsports Banner. It would be awesome if there were that diamond in the rough that Chad could mentor into the next championship contender and keep the 22 Motorsports rig in the pits going forward. Get well Chad. Man I am so sorry Chad, those injuries are just horrific, I hope you heal up well. You gave us fans, especially the last 2 seasons, some serious seat of the pants racing there that were incredible. This is not only a bummer for you but for all of us as well and for SX in general.
You have to be the toughest dude out there to still be standing after all those injuries. I hope some billionaire comes along and supports your team for all your efforts as you took on a huge responsibility the last few years and someone has to recognize all this and come along for support. You should a hundred sponsors fighting for your team. They just got to realize how important you are to our sport. Get well soon and best wishes to you and your family.

I can't believe people are already writing off this season, like they know whats gonna happen. Villopoto could get caught up in crash next weekend and be out for the rest of the year. And why is everybody already writing off Dungey? He's only 13 points back and could easily find some extra speed to hang with Villopoto. This isn't Formula 1, you can't determine the outcome of season that's only half-over.
@COPRO.......yep it could of been worse, and it could always be worse. the only way to truely prevent injuries in this sport is to leave your bike in the hauler........... sack it up c-pro! reed was impressive....but i wonder if he will race again next year? wont matter to me either way, he's proven he is a total badd ass and an icon. good luck to cr22.... glad youre still walking man!

Although I am not Reed fan, I hated to see this, I did not expect him to be a factor this year, and he proved me wrong, hopefully someone can step up and start challenging Villipoto and make a championship race out of this season! I hate to see anyone run away with it, Dungey needs to dig DEEP and maybe put some orange plastics on his old Suzuki and see if he can challenge!!
Yeh, I agree with most of the comments here, the season is going to get very boring, most likely a RV runaway and repeat.
To smee113, I think Regal would be a good fit for 22 motorsports. His rookie season was on a privateer Honda I think? Did pretty good outdoors. Yeh, Give him a shot!
Just a thought for Speed. Can we get Reedy in the booth? Would be some serious fun having him commentate with Emig, Ricky and Shaneen. The guys such a good dude and this would make us fans feel like he is still in the season. I think it would be great for the sport.

check the youtube video replay of the tv broadcast. from 2 different angles you can see that chad (while in mid air) was trying to pull back his body weight (watch him jerk his but back twice) and was caught on something with his left leg. then you can see clearly from the head on view shown next, his bike after the initial crash pulled him over the next sand jump by his left boot. i think a boot strap came loose and got hung up on his footpeg or frame area. we all have had a boot strap come loose on us for 1 reason or another, and this doesnt seem to far fetched to believe to me.

never been a big Reed fan, but seeing that digger and knowing what it meant, made me sick. I've got alot of respect for what he has done over the last two years. I hope the best for him and his family. BTW, K-DUB has been known to step in for American Honda when they are having injury problems. And he was even riding Reed's bike before San Diego. Could we maybe see him on the 22 for the out doors? Sounds good to me.
I hope tha reed is back in a year or so, This knee injury is pretty bad. I also hope that the japanese dirt bikes quit this making everything better, and let riders ride. Pretty soon the bike will jump and land by itself. Get rid of the electronics ,no launch control, See what riders are capaible of.
to yama645 I dont know who you been watchin but the thing that holds JS7 back is the ground hard to win taking a dirt nap every race and if you look back he has taken himself out more often than ANYONE...Js7 was fast but never consistant other than he is going to wreck...now he dont have the speed if he goes fast as CR22 RV2 or RD5 mabe for a few laps but thats it...and he has crashed everyone on the track trying to win thats the only way he can get by them... Chad U are the class of the sport. hope you a speedy and full recovery and as for a replacement rider only one comes to mind .......KDUB

It would be nice to see Reed at the track in a Team owner or media role for sure. The best position for him maybe a track builder consultant in the interim.
