Ryan Morais Update
Sunday, January 22, 2012 | 9:40 PM
With the help of OMS I was able to track down an update on Ryan Morais this evening. He suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, three neck fractures, broken jaw and a concussion....
The good news is that Ryan has complete movement and will likely not require surgery for his neck.
It was a brutal crash and both Ryan and Trey Canard (as well as Weston Peick, who actually got back up for the restart) should make full recoveries.

GOOD TO HEAR! KEEP THE UPDATES COMING!
GOOD TO HEAR! KEEP THE UPDATES COMING!
Holy crap!! We dodged a bullet this weekend. what Little I could see from the TV coverage looked violent!
The fact that both these talented athletes will be ok is....well, just warms the heart.
As a guy who has been busted up doing this sport and keep coming back, I just love that the these guys will be back to do what they love.
Speed recovery fellas.
best of luck on your recovery Ryan..
Hope they heal up and get back on track soon.
It was a nasty accident to see.
Just a thought on this.
Would it improve safety if on the opening lap of a race you were only allowed to double/single the triple??
I don't want to see the racing controlled but seeing Morais come down and land on Canard the way he did made me feel a bit sick.
Just thinking how much better it is when all these guy's are injury free and racing.
So I guess the 3rd rider was weisteion peick and not Nick Weigh as earlier stated huh?
That was a vicious crash...glad to hear Ryan and Trey are OK (relatively speaking). Heal up quick, guys!
@SPS101, I like that idea. I think when the first triple is that close to the start it is alway sketchy. I though Dungey was going to get landed on in the heat race. Double the triple on the first lap- COOL.
Knowing he was not going to make the triple, shouldn't Trey Canard not have rolled up onto the jump everyone was landing on off the triple? When a rider makes a mistake and misses a obstacle, it is HIS responsibility to ensure safety when re-entering the main racing line(ex. triple jump landing). We yell rules need to be made for the future(surprise!). How about the riders take care of each other and stop doing dangerous things on the track that endanger other riders? Missing the triple Trey should have realized all the people jumping over his head and waited before going up the landing on the first f'n lap.
I understand all points of view and have to agree with Pizza Corner. Canard should have tried to exit the track and return. The track builder should have left an egress and a place to re-enter.
Regardless, it happened and I hope both riders heal up, and if they are able to return to racing, great. But their health is paramount.
When I see stuff like this I worry for everyone racing, myself, my family, and all of you. It is a brotherhood whether you agree or not. I wish everyone a safe and healthy year.
thanks Race X for Ryans update, get well Ryan!
@motomike-77. Great post!
If we can't do away with triples in supercross, maybe what needs to happen is design the tracks with one triple and it is only placed on the track at the 50+ second part of the course, in the hopes that the riders have spread out more at the end of the first lap.
As a racer, you almost have to commit to the triple even if it's right after the start and a blind takeoff. Because if you don't commit, you are going to be at the back of the pack (or worse, get landed on). I think we could be a little more creative with the design, and still make it exciting for the fans, fun for the riders and safer.
Just my 2 cents.
And all the best to Ryan and Trey. I hope for a quick and full recovery, and we will see you on the track soon.
God bless you Ryan and I hope you have a speeds recovery!
God, that's brutal! I wish you the absolute best/speediest recovery, Ryan... and I know your wife is an RN, which can't hurt.
I hate Monday quarterbacking, but you can't take away the ability to triple.
Ryan Hughes had the best suggestion of filling in the gap between 2nd and 3rd, making a jump over a table instead of a triple. Trey's momentum was going up as Morais was coming down; obviously bad news. A table in this situation might have allowed Trey to accelerate out of harms way.
I hate seeing guys get hurt like this.
Good news about Trey and Ryan ... Its time for Trey to think real hard about coming back to soon , or at all , he is a young man with his whole life ahead of him , He has lucked out to many times , sort of like Doug Henry ..
As someone too old to do a pro supercross triple, Ryan Hughes suggestion is a good solution. But while I always advocate for the tabletops at my local playgrounds ( lets us slower guys work up the double distance slowly and safely) a tabletop would not have made much of a difference in this situation. Tabletops instead of doubles would likely have other unintended consequences to the racing line.
If absolute safety was important enough, we would all be playing softball huh?
wow what a shame no paralisis thats a good thing poor trey cant catch any relief i hope him and ryan still can race in the future they are good people and didnt deserve this good luck guys
