Wil Hahn out 3-6 Weeks with Fractured Hip

Thursday, January 12, 2012 | 7:25 PM

CORONA, Calif. – Bad luck reared its head and bit GEICO Honda's Wil Hahn for the second consecutive year.

Following a 2011 beset by injury, Hahn will now miss three to six weeks of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Lites West season after fracturing his right hip during training on Wednesday at the Honda practice facility in Corona, Calif.

"I'm just shocked, numbed," Hahn said. "I was training this week at the Honda track and things were going great. I went over a step up, landed awkwardly, fell over and landed hard on my right side.

"I felt sore when I got up. I went to the doctor and X-rays showed something was wrong. I went to a specialist on Thursday and he said my hip was cracked. Now I have to sit again. I can't believe it. I'm not even bummed. I'm beyond that."

Team manager Mike LaRocco said that it's too late in the week to find a substitute for Hahn at this weekend's race at Chase Field in Phoenix.

"We didn't know how bad Wil's injury was until after he saw the orthopedic guy Thursday," LaRocco said. "By that time, the truck had already left for Arizona and it was too late to find someone to fill in Wil's spot. So we'll just have Kevin Windham and Eli Tomac racing for us this week.

"We just feel sick about this for Wil. He had been so strong on the bike in practice and at A1, and to see him have a setback like that makes your stomach turn."

Hahn had a triumphant return to Supercross racing last week at the season opener in Anaheim. At Angel Stadium, Hahn won his heat race by several seconds and finished eighth in the 250cc main. Hahn lost the entire 2011 SX season with a broken back suffered during practice at the season opener.

"I'm totally bummed about it," Hahn said. "I rode so well at A1. Now I'm going to have to sit out. I'm going to follow the doctor's orders so I can come back and finish the season strong."

In the meantime, LaRocco said he has a short list of riders he's considering for the substitute role during the time that Hahn is sidelined, and would consult with team ownership before a move is made.

Practice on Saturday gets under way at 12:30 p.m. PST from Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. The main event gets under way at 7 p.m. SPEED TV will air the event live starting at 9:30 p.m. EST.

I find it hard to understand why so many riders are getting hurt. Is it the heavy 4 strokes?? I know riders have been getting hurt from day one, but its getting out of control.

Fast bikes, strong gravity, soft bodies, hard ground.

Can he heal up and race the east coast, or is that illegal?

Chico - Yeah its ilegal because he's already raced a West Coast round. If he hadn't made the main they might have made an exception, but I really doubt they will now.

That is such a bummer. One of my favorite riders, and he's already been out way too much. As others are saying, I sure hope others don't start falling by the wayside too.

Man, Wilbur just can't get Lady Luck on his side. He was looking soooo freaking fast at Anaheim!!! Hate to say it but I would rather see them hurt at a race rather than practice. Would rather nobody get hurt at all but that is the game. Anaheim was pretty good as far as injuries go. Did not see the Medic Mule come out at all unless it happend when I went to the pits. Bummer for Hill as well. Two of my favorite riders. Get well soon guys!!!

some riders just get injured a lot. Look at some other riders, they never get injured (knock on wood). Then you have some riders like Hahn and Grant that get injured every season.

I think if you get injured that often, it's time to just step away from the sport. I don't know. It sucks. But there is something up with their technique that is causing them to crash so much.

Its called 4strokes are jokes, just look how big, fat, and ugly the bikes are! Look how many break down, look how much they cost to fix, listen to how gay they sound, and the worst part is, chicks are not impressed! If you want to impress the ladies learn to ride a 125 2stroke WFO at you local track. Just look at my pits,125,250 2strokes, and different girls goin in and out of my trailer all day long. After all, I am Mr. Motorcross!

Hey Mr Motocross, I saw your new diesel 2 stroke recently but you had a pump going out and looked like a smudge pot crawling around the track. I saw those girls asking you how to keep a bike from falling over going slow. I hope you get your roaches fixed before the next race dude.

But after all, you are still Mr Motocross!

What about using the specs off Big Bros bike and prep a 450 for him for LA. Tommy can use this weekend and all of next week to dial it in.

Sorry Motorcross, But I did like the flat black brushed paint job on your Penton, and the Prince Albert tobacco can patch on your side case.

After all, you still Mr Motorcross!

It's funny that people think all these injuries are because of the 4-strokes. They are racing motocross, its dangerous no matter what bike you are on. Some people just need more milk.
