Ponca City to Relocate

Thursday, December 15, 2011 | 10:45 AM

NMA Announces the Ponca City Grand National Championship Motocross moves to new location.

“The Ponca City Grand National Championship Motocross is moving to a bigger, better and a more convenient location” announced Ron Henricksen, President of the NMA. The OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX, located in Norman, Oklahoma has been designated as the new home of the Grand Nationals. Next year’s event will be held July 22 through July 28, 2012 at this new location. After a recent trip to Oklahoma and seeing this great facility and meeting with the enthusiastic property owners the decision was made to select this new location.

The OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX has all new 50 amp electrical hook-ups, plenty of pit parking and a 100% viewable track. A national Go-Kart facility on the property with kart rentals will be available during the Grand Nationals.
The city of Norman offers many conveniences to the racer families including 400 restaurants, major shopping malls and stores and excellent hotel accommodations. Sooner Legends Inn and Suites in Norman, Oklahoma will be Hotel Race Headquarters and they are offering special rates for racers during the Grand Nationals.

The new location will make travel for the racers much more convenient. The OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX is located on I-35 and is close to Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. It will be closer for those traveling to Tennessee for the next major motocross event the following week.

The previous location in Ponca City was discovered by the NMA with the first NMA Ponca City Grand National Championship held there 33 years ago. At that time the city owned property was a riding area for local kids. The improvements to the property over the years are a result of many NMA man hours and dollars which transformed it into a nationally known motocross facility. The NMA Grand National Championship Motocross event at Ponca City has resulted in millions of dollars to Ponca City and their local charities.

Qualifying races for the 2012 Grand Nationals are currently being scheduled in the 40 regions across the country. The dates and locations of the qualifiers can be found at www.nmamx.com. The NMA and the OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX look forward to presenting a great 37th Annual Grand National Championship Motocross at the new location.

Motocity would be a better choice.... or Reynard Raceway.

I drove by the Norman track last week and it looked horrible. I have rode there once and will never go back again. Robbie's would be a better choice than norman. Ponca though is by far the best of them all, i have enjoyed riding there for years.

You have to look at the bigger picture. There are more places to stay, eat and things to do in Norman. Location, location, location !! Robbie's place doesn't have the parking area and you would have to drive to Shawnee to get a hotel or eat. I'm sure the guys at Norman will have a great track by July !!

Robbie's has all the room in the world on the north side for parking. Im not sure where you are getting with having to drive to shawnee, Edmond is 20 minutes away. we will see about them having a good track by July. personally i think that it will be a 1 year deal and they will not go back.

Ponca isn't moving one bit. Thankfully they forced out Ron and the NMA and are selecting a new promoter. Unfortunately, Ron feels he needs to schedule on top of Ponca with a new race in Norman. I bet he gets 200 entries.

When ron started the nma it was a good thing, just like the ponca city grand national but like most things, money and greed normally take over.As in Rons case, he always thought he was a big fish in alittle pond. He seems to have forgot that the money he made was from hard working people who gave their last dollar to race. He wants to blame certian people for things, like the grass is too tall around the fence or this or that was not taken care of before he comes weeks before the national...b.s. I have raced there the last 3 or 4 years and each year he neglects the track more and more but i still bet he got paid big money. Maybe next year he will worry more about the dog show than track prep. And since the new track is next to the river he can cover up the whole thing with sand, then smooth it out so it will look good..which will only last through the second lap of the first moto. And in regard to the water truck, he is too cheap to have two of them at one track. There is a reason why things come to an end...GREED.

Long live The Ponca City Grand National Championship. Because twenty years from know, this race will still be here and the nma could possibly just be a dog show organization.

Im sure there is more to the story than him just leaving just like with world minis its not in Vegas anymore because the speedway broke that off because he wasn't paying the speedway so it goes to the middle of no where mesquite. I stopped racing NMA races aloong time ago it was more of a money taker. would rather spend the money on Mammoth and Lorettas

GREED that pretty mouch somes Ron up we travled a long way to branson couple years ago. Only to get couple mottos in before we almost drown they were told to get us out of there but no ron ran couple races so he could justify no refonds or rain checks ect the guy couldnt even return a phone call. Then he reruns the race a week befor mini olympics come on.We may have whent back the next year even though the track is a joke for that big of a race and no equipment to maintain it properly but the guy couldnt return a call or letter he had the cash and thats it.So not surprised about ponca taken a dive what goes around comes around. wa wa but the guys a crook!
