Supercross TV Schedule Announced

Tuesday, November 22, 2011 | 10:30 AM

AURORA, Ill. – Feld Motor Sports® announced today the television package for the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, which – for the first time ever – includes 11 live broadcasts on SPEED and nine hours on CBS Sports.

For the first time in the sport’s history, SPEED will broadcast live coverage from the following 11 races: Anaheim Race 1, Phoenix, San Diego, Arlington, Atlanta, St. Louis, Daytona, Indianapolis, Toronto, Seattle and Las Vegas.

"The last few seasons of Monster Energy Supercross on SPEED have provided great storylines and fantastic racing," said SPEED President Hunter Nickell. "Being able to deliver a record number of races live on SPEED in 2012 is a testament to the growing interest in the series and the commitment to continue that growth by our partners at Feld Motor Sports and the team here at SPEED."

CBS Sports will provide next day coverage at Los Angeles, Oakland, Anaheim Race 2, Houston, New Orleans and Salt Lake City. In addition, CBS Sports will air a Monster Energy Supercross season preview on December 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET, a Monster Energy Supercross special on February 26 at Noon ET and a Monster Energy Supercross season recap show on May 5 at Noon ET.

“On the heels of the greatest season ever, the increase in live coverage on SPEED, and the network coverage on CBS Sports is another step forward for the sport,” said Charlie Mancuso, president, Feld Motor Sports. “This elevates the riders, the sponsors and the sport to a higher level and provides the loyal fans the most comprehensive television package Monster Energy Supercross has ever had.”

Host Ralph Sheheen will be joined by color analyst and former Supercross class champion Jeff Emig, while Erin Bates will return as pit reporter.

In 2011, television ratings on SPEED increased 24%, which included eight live broadcasts, up two from 2010, and CBS Sports provided nine hours of network coverage that yielded a 21% increase in ratings.
Similarly, Internationally, Monster Energy Supercross was broadcast in 181 countries. Highlighting the international interest was a 66% increase in Australia, home of former two-time Supercross class champion Chad Reed, during Q1, besting NFL Playoff coverage.

I hate to sound like a dick because I love motocross, but you can have the live coverage. Three and half hours of tv to wach 45 minutes of racing. I think it sucks. I bought a DVR and watch all the races the next day. Then I don't have to sit through the constant commercials and track maintenance. Supercross has a long way to go in the "live coverage" format-my own opinion, of course.

BRING IT!!! It gets better every year... Prime must be in his youth as any old dog such as myself knows what it's like looking forward to ABC Superbikers as the only "moto" on TV... as well as the occational Evel Knievel... yes I'm showing my age.

HA!! I remember those days too moto!! I just think Supercross coverage sucks. Not enough racing. Way too much crap in between motos. I'll never buy Progressive Insurance because I am so sick of seeing their commercials during a race.

If you look at a typical live SX event it is 3 hrs, the same as an NFL football game. However, with a 450 & 250 main, 2 heats and LCQ you get 67 minutes of actual action/racing taking place. Compare that to a NFL football game.

NFL game is four 15-minutes quarters. Most of the time the clock is running while players huddle, line up, do substitutions, etc. The actual time where NFL players are engaging in action on the filed is only about 12 minutes in that 3 hrs.

SX is pretty darn good entertainment at 67 minutes of actual action compared to 12 minutes in the NFL for the same live time period.

Glad to see the coverage continue... though I greatly prefer the Speed coverage to the CBS coverage. Is this a money maker for Feld or a lost leader to bring in fans? I find it strange that it appears that the promoters don't really share the growing popularity and income generated by SX with the performers (riders). It seems that the riders get most of their income from sponsors and the like, while the promoters keep all the profits from their efforts and risk taking...

I must agree I can't stand the Progressive Insurance commercials either... annoying to say the least.

Please someone at Racer X let CBS know that showing highlights of the racing is not what the people want to see. I don't want to see 10 minutes of RC car coverage in the pits so I can see two minutes of highlights of the heat Bubba wasn't in. I too an a product of seeing the Carlsbad MXUSGP 9 months after it happened. I appreciate where we've gained coverage and it's in a timely fashion, but lets watch racing not Broseph in the pits with his hat on sideways flashing some lame gang sign.

I love the live coverage, unless NBC is producing it. Even though Flo and the nationwide insurance guy need a good punch right in the squawk, I'll happily deal with it rather than wait 2 weeks to watch the highlights of the 450 main in the middle of the night on ESPN 2 and then wait another week to watch the 250 main.

I'll take any coverage over no coverage.....but, they do need to work on the CBS specials a bit.....more racing less talk.....you want people who are not familiar with SX to tune in an see racing....not dudes with RC cars..or off track nonsense..IN an hour of coverage they could show almost every lap of racing......

YUCK!!!!! Bates is back,, Isnt there someone else going for her job??? getting rid of her would be a great improvement ......if they can get a former racer or someone from the biz down on the track doing rider interviews and track talks, someone who isnt trying to turn it into a soap opera or in some events clearly annoy the riders........Bates is past her prime (long ago) as far as being the " beauty pit reporter" and isnt a very good "reporter" to begin with...the little snipits we see the monster girls, Rockstar or random hotties in the stands during broadcast serves that purpose...I watch SX for the racing...not to hear Bates ask Ryan Dungey a question we already know the answer too....

can we PLEASE get rid of Erin Bates?! Jamie Little actually RIDES and knows what the h3ll she's talking about. Typical Erin Bates interview; "You just won, how doe this make you feel?" can't stand her.

This is probably beating a dead horse but yeah, CBS coverage is a joke. Especially if
Jamie Bestwick is a gust announcer. I've never been more tempted to turn off the tv on the sport I love and when I watched it on DVR I muted him every time he started talking. And Flo and all the other insurance commercials are not winning themselves any customers. Why is it getting more annoying and less entertaining to watch races?

I live on the West Coast, so only one CBS channel runs SX here and it's always a mystery as they never advertise it. But getting up at 9:00am Sunday morning to watch SX is a real turnoff. It tells me CBS has no value for this at all and it's just a filler for them. Can't complain about the 11 live races though, THANKS SPEED

Hey BillC...it fits...right in your mom's a$$.

@Prime. Pretty funny comeback. Only one problem...I think BilC is about 50 years old. That makes his mom(if she is still alive) probably 75 years old, give or take. Those additional facts make your comment involving buggery and the elderly more disturbing than the CBS coverage of SX.

Maybe we can get Flo and Ralphy together, and they'll run off together, wishful thinking.Every year the coverage gets better and better and 1 of those years Ralph will be long gone.

Man why does everyone hate Ralph? He's actually a true fan of the sport, and an extremely cool dude. Who would everyone rather have? Eckman? Despain? Todd Harris? all good but I think Ralph is okay.

"...the increase in live coverage on SPEED, and the network coverage on CBS Sports is another step forward for the sport,” said Charlie Mancuso, president, Feld Motor Sports. “This elevates the riders, the sponsors and the sport to a higher level..."

Since more coverage is seen as moving the sport forward, does this mean the 60% reduction in coverage of outdoor motocross in 2012 moves the sport backwards? Does this also mean that the reduced coverage lessens the riders and sponsors?

And for the bs excuse of blaming the Olympics, the Olympics are for ~two weeks starting July 27 and ending around Aug 13 -- a time when historically there has been a break in the outdoor national schedule.

How about FREE LIVE AUDIO from every race??? I'm talking to the money grubbing bastards at FELD who took away the option we had back in the days of dial-up internet.
