Stewart to JGR Looking Like a Go

PrintRacer X has learned that the much-rumored James Stewart to Joe Gibbs Racing deal is imminent. While this has been discussed for over a month, we also know that Team Suzuki was making a push for Stewart and that nothing official would come until next week (we reported this in our Monster Energy Cup Notebook story yesterday).
Sources now indicate that a JGR/Stewart announcement is indeed coming early next week. Details are scarce. Will he be on a Yamaha? Outdoors too? Is there a potential NASCAR component? What about a teammate and sponsors?
We'll know more next week, but for now, our sources say James Stewart will be riding for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2012.

We heard that James "Bubba" Stewert might be going to JGR, were not sure... but we know he's realllly thinking hard about it.
You know good fillers are interviews or bios of maybe some of the ams like Bell, Thompson, all those guys. I'd be all over that.

I remember 2 years ago when Joe Gibbs racing said they would never buy a title winner because they would rather build one. Looks like they were getting desperate.
I would have loved to have seen a coop effort with JGR and Two Two motorsports. Would have been cool to see Reed on Yamahas again. I could really care less what Bubba does or if he ever races again. I was like one of his biggest fans and now hes just gotten old.
I had a feeling he would go this direction!! Not sure why the question remains as to what bike he will be on....wasn't it announced recently that JGR was staying with Yamaha?? My two cents is that he liked the Suzuki better but the JGR team was a better fit!! Who knows, just glad he's getting it worked out!! Let the bashing begin, or should i say continue!! haha

JS7 doesn't need any help from the bike.He will be crashing no matter what he rides!
I guess it's going to be the bike's fault again when RV is feeding it to him. And mjf909.......the bike is fine, look at GP results and the number of YZ450's on the line at any given AMA pro race (other than the MEC for some reason, probably because it was invitiational?)......JS is the only champion who can't make that bike work other than Pourcel who pulled off the track and bailed out on the nationals because he was out of shape.
I was really hoping for Suzuki.....the yellow is a nice visual contrast to the backdrop as it's cart-wheeling through the air! Oh well....the blue bikes are proven projectiles just the same....
I never understood the idea about "not wanting to buy a title contender." Maybe it's different in NASCAR, but in MX there are only a few guys who can get it done, and no matter how much you development you put into others, it's just not going to happen. Maybe it was part of their learning curve.
Funny thing is, when Albrecht first went to JGR, it seemed logical that Stewart would eventually follow. Just surprised it took this long. Now if only they can ditch the YZs...

Looks like James is sticking with Yamaha and going to JGR will reunite him with Jeremy Albrecht. James and JGR were both sponsored by Toyota and with Muscle Milk going to Honda, Red Bull may become a major sponsor of JGR. JGR is not a Factory team but it's resources are good enough to compete with Factory teams.

Can someone give me a logical reason why you think Yamaha's suck? I'm pretty sure they've been the most dominant oem bikes since the late 90's until the last couple years, but they are still great bikes just like the rest of them. Haters should stfu

Not saying they suck, but Stewart never looked as comfortable on the YZF as he did on the KXs. Look at the footage and it's pretty clear. Any of the brands would be fine for most of us mortals... but even as a slow old vet I always thought my 07 Yamaha turned weird compared to my 05 Honda.
Does JGR get full factory support from yamaha?
JGR is probably considered to be the "factory" Yamaha team.....Since Yamaha hasnt has a factory team in some years now, the San Manuel L&M was pretty much considered the "factory" outfit wiht Reed, then Stewart.....With JGR / Yamaha taking over that top tier for Yamaha support, things could go very well....Obviuosly there was "issues" in the JS7/ L&M camp last year.....so who knows....JGR probably has more money and resources than Yoshimira/Suzuki....and that is probably the deal breaker..... Has JGR officially released a statement of which bike they are racing....Perhaps JS7 knew he was going JGR the entire time, but what bike JGR was going with was/is up in the air?
Either way...its a better fit for James and he can focus on riding instead of running a team......
So JGR had Brayton and Milsaps....Brayton is at Honda and I have not heard a word on Milsaps...If JS7 ends up with JGR....Im betting Milsaps gets that void spot for Suzuki......

Hey RetardX, i don't think you can use the argument that the Yamahas do well in the GP's.......people try and say the same thing about the KTM's and it is disallowed. They say a bikes GP success does not translate in to success in the states!! Apparently these bikes act differently when under the ass of a top guy in Europe as opposed to the ass of a top guy in the US!! Just sayin'!! You say JS is the only champion who can't make that bike work......how many races did he win on it last year?? 4 or 5 wasn't it?? Also, what other "champion" is currently riding a Yamaha?? He'll kick ass on whatever bike JGR puts him on!! GO BUBBAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
@Trend Killer...i'm pretty sure there was a story on RacerX a couple weeks ago confirming that JGR was staying with Yamaha. I agree though, i think JGR will spend some cash to build a good bike!!
If JS rides Yams next year, no more excuses. I do think that the JGR Yams looked better than JS's Yam. Still would like to see him on Zoooooks...
Wow its amazing how many people have turned on JS ...the haters are really coming out of the woodwork!...Old?...Slow??...Cant ride anymore??...are u kidding me?? besides RC ...No one else has EVER gone undefeated in the outdoor season. I think JS7 can win on any bike, just like RC or MC did....He proved he can win on the Yamaha last year and did so convincingly many times. Maybe geting the bike 100% dialed last year was a problem....either way, i think the JGR outfit will serve him well.....JS7 wants something, they can make it happen....JS7 never came out and said he didnt like the Yamaha....its just been stirred around web....He may have not been 100% happy with the set up, like RV was this year in the outdoors for example, but once it that issue is resolved like we saw with RV, that can change everything.....RV was still running up front with the old bike, just like JS7 was last year.....but once he jumped on the 2012, there was a BIG difference.....If JGR and JS7 can do the same, then 2012 could be a great year for JS7
Whatever.........KTM has never had a title contender under their wing, do you think that might be why they've never won here? And don't go back to the McGrath days, the new bikes don't share a thing in common with those old POS's. Also to agree with your point considering he won races, won every heat of the year with the exception of 1 or 2, and consistently posted the quickest lap times, would that not lead you to believe the bike is good? It's JS that needs fixing, that's becoming more apparent all the time. He can't deal with the pressure when it counts and time bombs like he has through his entire career when faced with big competition.
Trend Killer......you hit the nail on the head. It's their own setup issues which in reality is just as much a responsibility for JS to resolve with the team as anyone elses. Especially someone unique like JS, his input would be vital in bike setup because his bike setup is not considered "normal". Brayton silently creeped just outside the podium for how long and his bike looked fantastic.
No question Stewart will be fast.......he will also crash!!
All I care about is if Bubba is racing outdoors or not, he will bring it in Supercross everybody knows that, he will be in the mix....that's good for everybody! Agreed?.... but more respect if he races the outdoors!!!!!!

The Yamaha tuned at that level is fine. He pretty much had the fastest lap times other than #2 almost every race so he is going fast on that bike. I think he just loses focus more now for whatever reason. He couldn't afford to do that last year and there is no way he will get away with it this year with RV's speed AND confidence gained over this past year.
I think Stewarts setup issues caused him problems not the Yamaha. His team was in disarray last year and he has never been good at dealing with bike testing. When James was with factory Kawasaki they had guys like Tim Ferry who would test and find good setups and James would use them. He has always ridden over the front of the bike and always had crashes that looked like last year, all the way back to his rookie season. Stewart will be fast, but guys like Villipoto and Dungey who race all year and work hard at setting their bike up in the off season will be consistent, crash less, and one of them will win the title.
I'm not sure if this will be such a good fit really. Doesn't JGR require you to live in North Carolina and train with the team? That's how they did with EVERY OTHER RIDER, so we'll see if that gets waived for Stewie. And Coy Gibbs runs a tight ship, not sure if he'll allow that circus that follows Bubba to interract over there. Personally, I think Stewart would have been better to go to Suzuki, but what do i know right? haha. One thing is for sure, either team will not give him a supercross only contract, so he'll definitely have to earn his keep. It will be good for the outdoors to have all the racers on the line.
dc99.........If Coy makes him abandon his circus and focus on racing with the team he might have a glimmer of hope.
2012 will be great. yes stew is fast hope he keeps it on two wheels if not RV is sx champ come 2012.lets not forget that whas the only rider that has won some RC. and fan or not we care for the guy.stew is gonna ster things up.
JS7 has already stated he is racing indoors and out next year.....He wanted to do some outdoors this year...but what was the problem? The bike....the team ....the drama....who knows....In some ways, saying " we are not ready" is more professional than saying " these L&M a-holes will not release us to ride outdoors and the Yamaha contract is with L&M, not us riders....so we can ride all we want...but racing is not permitted".....hopefully all these questions will be answered in upcoming weeks....
I wonder with the jump to JGR, JS7 is no longer with ANSWR since JGR was SHIFT.....or perhaps JGR is now the ANSWER????

Is the Yamaha really that bad of a bike? Pourcel gave up his ride because he did not feel confident on it. Also never saw James crash so much, especially while leading!!! What makes that bike so bad? Just wondering.

@Retardx, amazingly i don't necessarily disagree you on that....i really don't think the bike was bad at all, and my point above was more about the KTM deal than it was JS or Yamaha. It just seems that recently when some one mentions KTM's success in the GP's they say it means nothing about the potential of the bike here.....no big deal! I think JS needs to try and get himself and his program re-focused!! I personally think he is trying to do that!! Time will tell everything!!
For Sale James Stewarts Factory race semi. Barely used, Tires have never been in the dirt! Only 1 third the miles of the other semi's on the race circuit. It sat most of it's life due to rider injuries, no outdoor use! It's been kept in stadiums it's whole life. It was never loaned out to other riders on the team. When James sat out and when Larry brooks stayed home we wouldn't even let his team mate Kyle Regal use it! We made him sit out for the nationals.

mrroboto - Hansen is going to be making an ass of himself at Hart & Huntington, should be interesting to see how that pans out.....Grant sounds like he may end up at Jeff Ward Racing and Milsaps will either remain at JGR or maybe Suzuki again....I think the JS7 decision has some folks on stand by.....so once his deal is official, then the pieces will come together
This deal would make sense since muscle milk left to honda so I guess bubba would bring in Red Bull as their energy drink sponsor.
Am I the only one who finds it funny that slow amateurs talk crap about JS7 crashing, yet they can't clear a small 50ft double, or probably don't even own a bike?
I hope you can grow some balls and race JS7, let him crash 442 times, and watch as he still will lap you every 3 laps....just saying....

Stewart will once again work with J bone. I think the suzuki deal would have been better in terms of bike but I know Joe Gibbs has big money with potential of Nascar. Those Joe gibbs bike are good but no where near makita suzuki.
Somebody said it before on here I think but Brayton looked pretty good on that Yamaha and now he is on the factory Honda and didn't exactly kill it at the MEC. When you look at Stewarts crashes...what can you say is the bikes fault? maybe his washouts but RV had some of that too. Stewart going over the bars at Daytona is not the bikes fault, landing on Jason Thomas, not the bike, possibly running into Reed after bucing in whoops, maybe but he was pushing so hard...how can you say?
If he stays on Yami and does well next year, people will say he has his focus back, it he does poorly, the bike is bad. If he was on Yellow and does well, its the bike, if not, its because he just can't focus anymore.
Dear Stewart family, if you read this stuff, thank you for staying cool and I know James will be awesome when we see him again. I have his jersey on my wall with Mcgrath and Carmichael, and they both retired already, so thank you for still racing when you could go sit on a beach somewhere.
James sets his bike up so he can go through the woops 25% faster than any one else. His bike has very stiff forks, soft shock(compared to front). So it rides like a chopper. Choppers cant take corners

Agreed dgizzy1....the zook might be a better bike and i would be curious as to which bike he personally likes better, but i really think there are several factors about JGR that pull him that direction as opposed to a Factory Suzuki (Yoshimura) deal.......J-bone....the Nascar connection......the fact that it is NOT a factory team. I'll bet if JGR had switched to Suzuki this deal would have been done long ago!! WTF do i know though, just speculation!!
Stewart lost his heart and passion for racing MX. So who cares what he's going to do.
Regardless of the lack of facts in this article, I'd put money that Stewie is not on a Yamaha at all next season. (That includes him not racing.)

If anyone has the talent to make up for an inferrior bike its Stewart. And the JGR yamaha might be better than the L&M/JSE yamaha, although they both are said to use GYTR parts. The bike may have been an issue but riding a Yamaha is not why he crashed his way out of the SX championship. Whether Stewart wants to admit it or not, his problems were self-inflicted last year. He's got a long way to go before he's beating RV for a championship.
james pulled more holeshots than anyone last year on the blue bike. the YZ is solid.

Hey guys i figured it out!! It wasn't the bike and it wasn't James himself......it was MALCOLM!! Here is a breakdown of JS SX results last year when Malcolm was on the gate in the Lites class and when he wasn't:
NO MALCOLM: 3-1-2-1-1-3-1-10
WITH MALCOLM:15-4-9-2-18-4-4-1-15
The best finish and only win James did get during the East Coast rounds was in St.Louis....Malcolm did not go to the gate for the Main there!! The 10th in Salt Lake is really the only deviation from what appears to be a definite pattern and relationship between the two!! I guess he was just worried about his little brother so much it took away his concentration on all of those nights!! Hahaha, i'm actually only half joking cuz it is a little weird how it lined up!! Oh, and im bored today too!! LOL

At this point, hiring James Stewart is a lot like starting from scratch; he's got a looong way to go if he wants to take that #1 away from Villopoto. But, now more than ever, if anyone can do it, he can.

I think its pretty obvious stewart is going with jgr because of the nascar connection. If he doesn't ride outdoors, then I have no respect for this prima donna. Stewart is going to be in for a rude awakening at villopoto and dungey's speed also. Stewart will never be "the fastest rider on the planet" again!
I wonder if Stewart is vain enough to have some sort of formal press function, Lebron James -style "Bubbles decision" aired on Fuel. Certainly sounds plausible.
@bobthebuilder - As soon as someone mentioned "the decision" on Vital, I knew that's exactly the sort of press he's looking for. You know he'd like to try it, too...but I doubt the networks would go for it. He'll have to build the hype on his twitter and within the 30 minute (?) slot of his own show.
What's going on with his show? When do they tape it? Hopefully it gets canceled or something so he can focus this year.
Hahaha..... 2012 will be a great game of checkers.....Red(RV) vs. Black(JS)..... RV is my guy but I do not count JS7 out for one second....A few of the races RV won last year were by result of one, Reed taking JS7 out....and then Daytona where JS7 was gone...but crashed....yes its racing, but JS7 was also whoopin' some serious ass, no doubt....So maybe JS7 puts the bad year behind him and makes another run....I'd like to see it....RV age 22 will be around longer than James age 25 at this point...so 2-3 years more for James if he sticks to it...and 5-6 for RV....Heck Reed is almost 30 and he still here and K-Dub too.....so who knows...its all about dedication.....JS7 will jump to 4 wheels one day....hopefully not for a few years....let Pastrana prove he should have raced bikes instead...NASCAR sucks.....if TP100 stuck to racing instead of backflipping his way into stupididyt....he would still be racing too...

Mike Allessi should have got that ride. He doesn't give up no matter what and is humble he would have fit in perfect. Ya he may not win races but if he is healthy he can match the top 3's lap times. I have never been a fan of him but the last couple years he has grown on me just like Chad Reed they are out doing it because they want to not to make millions. That would be nice but thats not their motivation like JS7

Travis Pastrana 199- I think we would all agree that TP199 is a much reveered MX rider/racer in this community. He won ONE MX Lites Championship, and ONE SX Lites Championship- and couldn't find success in the big bike class because he kept hurting himself doing stupid stuff off the track. He also was driving a Ferrari recklessly and got someone paralyzed, he has tons of action sports sponsors, races cars, and had a reality show where he did a bunch of stupid shit. Now if you ask me James Stewart has had a similar career, but with way more lites championships, A PERFECT SEASON OUTDOORS, and TWO SX Championships....We all love TP199, and now there is so much hate for JS7- wonder what will happen if he starts dominating in 2012?

Pleeeeeease make it SUZUKI!!!!! Look, if you're a fan of this sport and DON'T want to see him on a new bike, you have some issues to work through. It needs to be a new bike, a new chance, and a new story. The Yamaha, as innovative as it is, looks heavy, and the design is as ugly as a 1988 KX 250. Except the YZF (unlike it's cooler looking younger brother) is at the top of the list of unsightly mx designs in history. The RM is the way to go, for so many reasons. I just hope the "NASCAR" guys get this stuff, which...they likely don't.

After all the rumors and assumptions about why Larry was gone, why no L&M logos etc etc, he's back on Yamaha. Stewart will only ride on a team that has Redbull as a sponsor. As far as what bike, he would ride a Bultaco if they paid the most cash. All JS7s decisions are based on how much money he will make. He will not win anymore titles untill he is ready to start taking directions from someone much smarter than him. His talent could have rewrote the record books but his stupid decisions ruined that.

If hes riding the yamy hes gonna have another nightmare of a year. I've ridden every 450 and the ktm and yzf handled the worse. Even with factory suspension the bike swaps all over the place. Watch the yzf in the whoops and you'll see the rear end fall out of the line no matter who's riding it. James would fit a zook or honda better.

I love how everyone loves to praise villopoto for one good year and bash stewart for one bad year. haha your all so closed minded you can only see whats happening right infront of you. Villopoto managed to crash himself OUT OF his first two 450 seasons, but he's a god now because he won everything this year, even tho taking away bike problems from the equation (I know its a part of racing dont want to hear it) dungey wouldve been your sx and mx champ.
Ok great here is the news, so James will issue a press release saying sorry to fans and sponsors but he will not race first few rounds due to not being ready. Then he will try Nascar and show how much fun he is having on the mule. Then he will go really really really fast and take out another three of the top riders during the supercross. Then break his hand and miss the first six races of the Motocross.Sack his trainer, get pulled over for impersonating a motocross rider. Then we will find out he has secretly married Sorby. Wow sounds like a great year coming up.

@Juicey17 RV2 just won the most competitive SX season ever and one of the better outdoor seasons. He would have done it in 2010 had he not gotten serously injured. JS7 hasn't won anything in three years, yet he still calls himself the fastest man on the planet. Stewart still thinks he is a superstar and he is quickly becoming a has been. He thinks he is so fast that it doesn't matter what bike he rides and he does't need to race outdoors because he gets paid anyway. JS7 has showed he has zero integrity. All that BS that he was racing the last 4 outdoors in 2010 was for the fans. As soon as he got beat and found out he wasn't on the MXoN team he quit and went home for good. All he cares about is the money, period!

Personally, everyone looks the same through my rose colored glasses. I bet there is a huge population of Nascar fans who don't feel the same way. Going to be difficult for Stewie if they try to break down those barriers.

you yamaha haters are killing me here. I have a few names for you, jay marmont , josh coppins , paul whibley! and many more who from what i see dont seem to have many problems on theres. I myself ,all be it at a vet expert level love the bike.
Ive ridden all brands and capacites for many years and i felt comfortable right away on the bike. Mx is and will always be 80% rider 20% machine .
I have lost some respect myself for js7 but i like the guy and i hope he comes out on a blue bike and shuts the lot of you up once and for all. I surport the aussie guys, reed , mety and burner and i hope bt can get a ride to this year and show what he has . You guys who come on here and write your crap and diss on riders and brands over and over would never have a positive bone in your body to ride

I too would like someone to produce some proff that JS blaimed the bike. I heard him say a Unadilla that they were just not ready but thats it. so someone find it or stop saying it.

Difference is BillC - RD and RV have a compete level in them and they actually ride - both indoors and out. They aren't some wussy who is more interested in his TV show and making money than he is riding. Anyone who doesn't see that has the blinders on. Do you think either Ryan would have pulled out of Dilla a couple years ago? Hell, at Red Bud after RV crashed this year I don't think I would have ridden his bike to my mailbox it was so banged up! If that was Bubba he would have cried in his fancy motorhome and blamed the bike set up. Total fraud...
JS7 from what I recall has never mentioned having issues with the bike... He may have stated they were "working on a few things" like they all do during the year.....Most of the crappy bike talk has been discussed here or in some articles since it appears that there were set up issues...
I also think there is more to the story regarding JS7 not being able to race outdoors......bike set up may be part of it....but there may be more to it.....
tomktm I saw JS finish a few SX races that would have ended many peoples day's. The Dif is JS was not in the points so he took his illprepaird bike and went home.

It's my understanding from a couple pro friends that the Yamaha 450 is extremely hard to get set up right. They say if you set it up to turn well it's all over the track in the rough stuff, and if you set it up to handle the rough stuff, it won't turn worth a damn. Whoever said James has never been good at setup is right, he has no idea of which way to go on settings. He just rides it and either it works or doesn't. Kinda makes it hard on the suspension guy. Do wish him luck this year, no matter what you think about him, there is no doubt that when he's "on", he's one extremely fast dude.

LOL, people are so goofy. As if James is going to say in interviews that he hates the bike....while under contract. Frenchie though has made many a comment about how this guy will find out about the Yamaha and that guy. When Pourcel quit, Frenchie (Sorby) was Tweeting "see? see? It isn't just James!". He was quite proud of himself to be able to proclaim someone else fell victim to the bike. And I suppose Frenchie just made those thoughts up without any comments from James? And why was james hellbent on getting out of the Yammie contract if he liked it so much? He rode a Suzuki all summer long, allegedly.....certainly not because the prospects of getting the big bucks from them was there. But since some never heard him state something it isn't true. Oh, and Larry Brooks is still visiting his family I suppose? Heard that straight from James' mouth, MUST be true!

There is nothing wrong with the Yamaha, NOTHING!! Millsaps has had his best resul;ts with it. JGR obviously can build this bike right. Cant the Stewtards just admit that Stewie isnt the fastest, and give the other 3 who beat him thier just do?? those 3 guys are just fast period.

The MEC would have told the story about James Stewart's dedication and ability to compete against the best.But,James blamed his no-show status on "logistics" for this great event. "Logistics" or molting like a chicken, for James knows what he is would have been up against. If James thought beating RC was a task, wait until he competes against the 21st century best of real professionals in SX and MX. We made it to 6 outdoor nationals this year and the MEC and never have we seen such talented and truly dedicated riders.Yes indeed James, you indeed did fit in this category, but those are days gone by.We'll be at A1 and looking forward to watching what Mr. Stewart thinks he has to give against those who've just quietly and professionally gotten the job done for the fans.
