Here's a follow up on news we tweeted last night--Andrew Short broke both elbows and a wrist while testing in California on Tuesday. Here's the offcial KTM Press Release

ANDREW SHORT INJURED

KTM Motorsports is saddened to announce that Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Andrew Short was injured during a crash while testing and will sit out the remainder of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series.

Short, currently sitting 6th overall in the 450 Motocross class point standings, was testing in California earlier today. The team reported that testing went smoothly for the first half of the day and Short was riding exceptionally well considering the rough track conditions.

In the late afternoon he suffered a crash and was immediately transported to the hospital. After careful evaluation by his doctors it was determined that he has broken both elbows and his left wrist. Due to his injury, Short will sit out the rest of the season with an estimated eight week recovery period.

“It is unfortunate for Andrew that this accident has happened. The entire team is deeply disappointed that he is injured so close to the season end. Short was just doing his job today, and unfortunately, this is part of the sport. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to have him back on the bike soon,” remarked Red Bull/KTM Team Manager Roger DeCoster.

Sorry to hear about Shorty. KTM should resign him now to ride the 450 next year. No doubt the 350 is holding him back. I have a 350 and love it but, I'd never be able to get all the power out of a 450. The pro's can and I believe it's holding him back. He's not getting the starts that he did last year. The 350's are ruling the GP's but, they don't follow the production rules that they have to in the U.S.

@GMan ,,, It was HIS choice to ride the 350, not KTM's... Get well Shorty..

Ah-man sorry to hear that big time, running 6th in points on a 350 is hard work I am sure, but that's Shorty ,a hard worker, get well soon...... (my two cents)..I would love to see ya on a 450 myself!

@ EEE,,, Its a fact, it was his choice..

GMan wrote: 11:15am August 17, 2011

mxmofo,

I'd like to know how you know it was a "fact". I'm not an insider and only know what I read but, I can't believe there wasn't some kinda of influence by KTM for him to ride the 450. Even Shorty was saying that he wants to ride a 450 next year.
Regardless, I hate to see any of these guys get hurt and even more so when it's a good guy like Shorty. Get well soon Shorty and really hope to see you on an orange 450 next year.

I meant to say " some kinda influence by KTM for him to ride the 350"

Profile Picture
mxmofo wrote: 11:27am August 17, 2011

@GMan ,, he has said it as recently as Aug. 9th 2011 that he honestly believes that the 350 is the best bike for 99% of all riders.. He likes it, and it does lack power, but he wanted to ride it anyway.. I'm sure KTM wanted him to ride it, but in the end, it was his choice, just like it was Alessi's choice to ride the 450. I really dont think that KTM is going to let Alessi pick what he wants to ride, and not let Short pick, do you ??

Profile Picture
Shortyfan wrote: 11:34am August 17, 2011

Mxmofo...you dont think he gets paid to promote the 350??? He gets paid more to ride the 350 then to ride the 450. His recent pulpmx said he did not want to ride the 350 next year.

bd200 wrote: 11:38am August 17, 2011

Hate to hear that about Shorty, BOTH elbows, and a wrist. That is terrible, hope he gets back to 100%, I really like him. He really stepped up in the Des Nations last year.

Profile Picture
GMan wrote: 11:41am August 17, 2011

@mxmofo, It may be the best bike for 99% of the riders. Like I said, I have one and I love it. The problem is that 99% of the pro's aren't riding a 350. Shorty may very well have chosen the 350 but, I still don't believe that it wasn't without some kind of influence from KTM. If they didn't have someone under the KTM tent riding the 350, it would appear that they don't have faith in the bike either. KTM needed someone to ride that bike and I believe that there was some pressure applied to Shorty to help him make his "choice". Mike learned last year that it didn't work. Shorty has already said that he wants to ride a 450 next year. If it was his decision, it appears that he feels like he made the wrong one now. Like I said before, I'm not an insider and I'm guessing you aren't either so it's all specualtion. I guess that's why we love this sport so much.

Profile Picture
mxmofo wrote: 11:42am August 17, 2011

@ Shortyfan,, he certainly might get paid some for that. I think he thought he might not get as tired on the 350. I think he needs to be on a 450 also, but he wanted to try the 350, and yes, probably help KTM test it.

Sure it was his choice....... Somebody had to ride it. Mike was Sr. man over at KTM and he obviously didn't want to ride it because he chose the 450, Short hopped on it with a good attitude and claimed it.

Jeff wrote: 12:18pm August 17, 2011

They better resign him now! He is out testing for them when he doesn't even know if he has a ride next year. I hope he is on a fuel injected KTM 450 next year, or I'm gonna lose some enthusiasm for KTM as a company.

Profile Picture
gbs417 wrote: 12:21pm August 17, 2011

Sad news. I wonder if it was the same track that got TC41 back in supercross. If KTM doesn't pick him up next year, I hope he goes to HH, JGR, or a Suzuki team. AS29 is a top rider and that 350 made him look like a bum in the race results.

Profile Picture
951guy wrote: 12:37pm August 17, 2011

i'm sick of hearing all that 99% talk about the 350. i'm sure it's true, 99% of riders could get the most out of the 350, myself included, but the pro's should be the top 1% of all riders, or less even. so they don't need to be riding it.

some of these guys are right, there's no reason for the 350 to be a 350 in europe, so i'm sure it's not.

Desalle is out, too. He broke a bone in his shoulder and he already underwent surgey, he will be out till 2012. Too bad for the championship, which already lost Philippaerts and Ramon.
Good luck to Short, it might be his last ride on a KTM.

Short got 3rd in points last year, Now Reed is back, RV is back and a few others in the class so he is about the same as he was last year right?. How old is Short now? 25? 26? He may find himself on a smaller team next year. I would like to see KTM keep him but it might be hard with all the guys they Might have.

Where are all the people who are always saying he 450cc is the reason for all the injuries now?

Man I HATE to see anyone hurt, but I think all this "450cc bikes are the reason everyone is getting hurt" is a bit tiring. I've been watching people get hurt in this sport for 35 years, and I've seen careers ended on a 125cc 2-stroke, and 450cc 4-strokes and everything in between.

I feel horrible for Shorty and his family - speedy recovery man.

Sorry to blow the whole Short on a 350 vs. 450 argument up, but he’s finishing the same place he would if he was on a 450. He’s a solid 4 – 10th place rider and a few podiums when the planets are aligned right. He’s a great rider, but always just behind the top guys. Even if he were to get good starts on a 450 he would still usually end up 4 – 10th by the end of the moto.

If Short was still on a Honda he would be Top 5 this year. How do you explain a guy who got a holeshot or top 3 start AT EVERY OUTDOOR NATIONAL last year barely getting 10th place starts this year? This guy was a flat out machine in 2010, Dungey had to run him down at every race. Did he lose that ability in 6 months or could it be the bike? Why would someone "choose" to start 10th unless they were being paid for that choice. This will be a tough injury to come back from which sucks.

When you over jump or case something knarley ,it puts a ton of force on the radius in the elbow and they will break. It jams the forearm to the humorous. My brother shattered his on an overjump and Dr. Augustine put stainless balls in .You can function w/out them but you wont be able to ride.Heal up quick Andrew I've seen what you're experiencing

what a bummer!!!!!! get well Shorty!!! RELAX,TAKE SOME TIME TO THINK, AND GET RID OF THAT 350. Think about it......I don't recall you bing THAT great of a lites rider. Take a look at Barcia. His brain tells him to twist the hell out of the throttle to go fast. I believe he is riding that bike ABOVE the power! The 450 puts him in control of the power, right where he needs to be. YOU ARE THE SAME TYPE OF RIDER A.S. You get paid for POINTS and you're not getting as many. Really hope you read these things Andrew. Think hard. ( it should only take about a minute or two ) look at Mikes results.

Put Roczen on a 350 and I bet he gets top 3. I love the 450 and all, but that bike handles like crap. Bike is too top heavy and it feels like your jumping a station wagon.

Profile Picture
Mit12 wrote: 10:43pm August 23, 2011

There is no doubt that the 350 can win a 450 national. But if you look at shorts starts last year vers this year and he is giving up at least 5 positions on the average this year especially in the out doors. Yes Short is finishing about the same position as usual but he is doing it the hard way. On Honda he went from the front to his final finishing position, on KTM he is going from 7th or worse and moving forward. The facts don't lie.
