Sign Of The Lap Times: Washougal
Tuesday, July 26, 2011 | 9:45 AMRound eight of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship from Washougal, WA, brought a changing of the guard as Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto took over the points lead from Team TwoTwo/Bel-Ray's Chad Reed. Not to be outdone, Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey also made a big move in the championship standings as he took his second consecutive overall and climbed to within one point of leader Ryan Villopoto. Meanwhile, down in the 250 Class the Pro Circuit brigade once again fought over who would stand where on the podium with Blake Baggett taking the top spot. Let's see how it all broke down with this week's Motion Pro Sign of the Lap Times.

For the second week in a row the Ryans not only swapped moto wins, but the top spot on the lap charts. Villopoto took moto one while setting a blistering 2:05.999 on lap three--which also stood up as the fastest lap of the day. Moto two proved to be the Ryan Dungey show. He put the hammer down early and was able to pull away from Villopoto to take the overall. He also set the fastest lap of the moto with a 2:09.790.
If taking the overall wasn't satisfying enough for Dungey, he also got help in the form of teammate Brett Metcalfe who put himself on the podium for the first time this year. Why is that significant to Dungey? Metcalfe's podium took valuable championship points away from title contender Chad Reed, which could prove very significant as the championship hits the strech run.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Blake Baggett overcame an injured shoulder and a valiant charge by teammates Dean Wilson and Tyla Rattray to take the overall at Washougal. Baggett not only took the overall but also set the fastest lap times in both motos. Not to shabby of a day for the Cali native.
DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha continues to try and break up the PC trio. Kyle Cunningham finished third in moto one while teammate Gareth Swanepoel picked up the slack in moto two with a fourth-place finish. Putting the cherry on top of an already brilliant day, Gannon Audette put in another solid ride putting three of the Star Racing team members in the top-ten in the lap charts in moto one.

Going to be a tight points race to the end, the three top guys are giving us fans a great show!!!!!
I missed Washougal for the first time in many years... :-( Watching speed last night the crowed looked thinner than past years.
Can't believe nobody pointed out the fact that Rattray set his fastest lap in the second moto on lap 15!! Wow, that's saving something for the finish.
Crazy how RV and RD's time in moto 1 are so close. You'd thing RD had the faster average since he clawed his way up to RV, but I guess RV's first half charge leveled it out...RV looked great that first moto and maybe backed off too much?..Moto 2 it looks RD had the edge....I'm going with the restart factor in moto 2 frstrated RV a little and he made mistakes.... but awesome ride by KTM', I mean Suzukis ryan Dungey
No mention of Rattray posting his fastest lap on lap 15! That's called being in shape. BTW, is it Rat Tray like weege says, or is it ratraaaaayy like Lindsey says?
Rat Tray like Weege says
Ratters was on fire on the last couple of laps and put on a most impressive ride.
trend killer, dungeys avg lap was as close to villos because he went down and lost 8 seconds, but still very close. Good job for metty, he was runnin pertty good moto2.
Its crazy how no one mentions that TOMMY WEECK was LESS than half a second slower than Dean Wilson and only 1 1/2 seconds slower than BlAKE BAGGET on a complete privateer bike. Not like Reed who has help. He paid for all his parts himself with no sponsors. That boy needs a ride
The crowd was arguably the largest on record. Tommy was FLYING! Passed Barcia AND Sipes. Getm.
@ green rider - that is a good point with RD going down, but he was only down a few seconds....either way, RV set that blistering pace the first 10-12 minutes...I wonder if he maybe reverses that strategy and just run a slowr pace the first 10 minutes and stay with the pack, then pull away.....but i guess its easier to start faster than whick it up at the end
@Trey Lenzy - Reed is riding a full factory honda bike outdoors with some Two Two sticker kits and PC pipe...Reed gets his team to the races and the rest is all taken care of pretty much...
who keeps flagging me??? and why? U keyboard racers are making me angry. Keep talking about nonsense. TRENDKILLER_______ to me, i think dungey leaving suzuki would be a huge mistake. Ktm 250's are competetive. The KTM 450 has made lots of peoples careers go backwards. Look at 800. on a zook he could holeshot blindfolded. Shorty's not going any faster. Save the 450 (or 350) for Rocky , Muscrat, and Cairoli. Dungey doesn't need a step backwards. the ktms arent even EFI. dungey's been on efi since 08 when he got 3rd at indy SX. Stick with what works, and he knows his zook works darn good
When My Boy Trey Went Down, I Saved Him By Waving Old Glory In The Face Of Danger.
Yes I Did.
I told you guys Baby Stew was over-rated. He didnt even make the top ten in lap times. And last week his lap times was slower than the top 2 women. And guys think he deserves a factory ride?? Yea, right. There are way more deserving guys than him..
@told ya blah blah blah....nah na an .....another Stewart stalker one off with nothing good to say , ..it gets old. .Malcolm actually rode great and tried hard both motos. He's a good rookie and getting better. Did you see the names of the top ten guys...they wail. Doesn't mean someone else isn't trying. Where did you finish,oh yeah in your pajamas at grandmas while mom went on a date with your new 'uncle jimmy', Rattray just keeps on coming at the motos end ,he uses ALOT less energy (less whips ,scrubs ,neck stretchers ,dead revs etc lol) ,might help him last. Fast track ...everybody was movin'. The 3fity might(?) not have the beans but it makes a GREAT sound and shorty rode the wheels off it moto 1. Hahn and Brayton where getting after it also.
Dungey to KTM?
I actually like KTM, but I don't know WTH they were thinking with that 350cc machine. Lighter? More nimble? Wow, who cares if the power is not there keep up with the 450cc machines and clearly it is not. Sure it might be "only a tick slower" as people maintain but you know what? Confidence is everything in motocross, and if you are not confident that your bike is faster, you are done... going into a race knowing you are down on power but up on weight is not really a confidence builder...
IMO it would be a HUGE mistake for Dungey to go to KTM right now. Suzuki would be VERY stupid if they let him get away. He has become the face of yellow that they hoped they'd get after RC retired. Suzuki needs to pony up the money to keep Dungey in yellow...
@toldya - I'm not sure Malcolm will ever be a great rider, but he's not horrible. I agree he probably won't be getting a factory ride anytime soon. The fact is he has a lot of natural talent, but he has not been honing that talent all his life. He's late to the sport and older than the typical rookie as he hits 19, but I don't think he has no future. I think he's shown more promise in SX but it might be a couple years before we know for sure if he has any upside potential.
I think Malcom will do better on the 450's.....he is a big kid and seems to over ride the 250....Obviously, he doesnt have the speed of his brother but he isnt a slouch either.....factory ride, no....but satellite team perhaps if he can stay within top 10.
@Trend Killer-- he might become another Bret Metcalfe, I think Metty has had better results with the 450. Maybe its his riding style. But Millsaps is a big guy too, but he killed on the 250, and has had health problems ever since, Baby Stew is a rookie, he will improve.
Malcolm is faster than all the ladies
Malcolm is faster than everybody else in the known universe with the exception of about a starting gate full of riders.
Wild, raw, untrained, inconsistent........and able to top 10 in one of the toughest series as a rookie. With a mentor, trainer and riding coach he will mature, improve, and add to the depth of the greatness that is American Motocross.
