Daytona Supercross Super Spoiler Report

Saturday, March 5, 2011 | 11:15 PM

The drama and unpredictable circumstances continued in AMA Supercross tonight from Daytona, but this time they've resulted in a bigger points lead for one rider. Ryan Villopoto rode through the chaos, again, to deliver his second-straight win, and stretch his lead to 23 points.

But he may not have been the fastest rider. James Stewart jumped out to the early lead and started putting a big gap between himself and Villopoto early. But on lap four, Stewart went over the bars, hard, on a triple jump and slammed into the ground. His bike stayed on two wheels and launched the next triple by itself, so by the time Stewart got up, limping, he had to walk his way all the way back to his bike. By the time he got up, he was last.

Meanwhile Villopoto had a big lead and put down hard laps on one of the most demanding Daytona tracks in quite some time. The battle was on behind him, with Davi Millsaps, Andrew Short, Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey in the mix. Reed moved into second, and Dungey, who had to come through the LCQ after his bike broke while leading his heat race, got to third but couldn't close the gap on Reed. That rounded out the podium.

Trey Canard went down on lap one and then crashed again when Brett Metcalfe swapped in front of him while coming through. Metcalfe ended up 18th, and Canard 13th.

Stewart managed to get up, straighten his mangled bike, and dig his way back through the pack. Villopoto was close to lapping him for the entire main, but he never got by, and Stewart clawed up to ninth to salvage points after a hard crash.

In Lites, the show was all Blake Bagget. The California kid nailed the holeshot and simply checked out from Justin Barcia and Ryan Sipes, who were second and third. Dean Wilson crashed on the first lap and spent several laps just hammering his clutch lever back into position. He fought back to eighth.

If I ever get shot, stabbed or run over again... And I look up to see the Asterisk medical crew there, remind me to start crawling away in the opposite direction to find some real medical assistance.

They just stood there like they were mechanics, holding up Stewart's bike for him. They seemed more interested in being spectators and/or concerned with the bike, instead of checking out an obviously dazed and confused rider, that should not have been allowed to continue.

Asterisk is lucky the real AMA (American Medical Association) wasn't watching.

Who cares? It didn't change anything. Stewart woulda passed him anyway, it's not like Alessi had any steam left. I think it's funny people talk about Stewart like he's an idiot who threw it away, when he was clearly the fastest person on the track. The same people who were saying, a week ago, that Reed is as fast as him, and that Stewart isn't as good as his hype would have you believe. If anyone questions his heart, or speed, they don't know a thing about riding a motorcycle

I'm glad to see Stewie get up and be somewhat O.K. he didnt seem to hit his head very hard, glad for that. Daytona is just one of those tracks that can do that to a rider. Shaheen has a serious infatuation with Stewie. Stewie better stay clear or Shaheen might try to grope him. It was absolutely unreal how much time he spent talking about one rider(stew) the entire race. There are other guys racing Ralph, not just your golden boy. And when Stewie had his bad crash, he wasnt hanging it out wildly or doing nothing he shouldnt have been doing. He didnt seem to be riding over his head or anything, it was just a mistake. But RV2 keeps adding to his points lead, and he seems very cinfident too. Great ride by Dungey, and Reed also. Dungey charged well and made some good passes too. And decent ride by Roczen before he heads to the GP's. An eighth place is pretty decent, he got a few positions given to him by Metcalfe, who has struggled all year, And has a factory ride. And Shorty getting to 4th was a pretty good ride to on the long and hard track, he held up well and didnt fade. I think Millsaps needs to jog more, get into better shape.

I don't really understand the anti-js7 sentiment that smothers all the dialogue on this site in every comment section. Js7 is spoken about like he hasn't already proved he is the best in every class he rides. So he comes up one foot short on a triple and suddenly he's not "smart" enough to win a championship? You mean his third championship? Can we all try and get things in to perspective? He's a legend, Reed's a legend, the two Ryans maybe legends one day, canard as well. Can we get off the js7 bash train? When he's on he's unbeatable ( just ask Rv) when's he's off he's not too far off. If it's good enough for RC to show respect even when JS comes up short, it's good enough for everyone else.

I just wish people could enjoy the great racing that we have been able to witness this season.
RV2 is and has been my pick and I'm stoked for him and hope he gets the job done.
As far as you goofs hating on Metcalfe, Drop Dead. he has had some of the worst luck of any rider I can remember in years, maybe he thinks he's a geologist and not a professional motorcycle racer with the amount of dirt samples he has taken this year.LOL

jason weigandt: "Villopoto was close to lapping him for the entire main, but he never got by, and Stewart clawed up to ninth to salvage points after a hard crash."

Running at villopoto's pace, on the longest, roughest track on the circuit, after splattering himself into the ground, on the fourth lap. Amazing.

I thought it looked odd, that i could see villopoto behind stewart, with 6 laps to go, and he was still back there at the finish. Stewart was hauling butt, all things considered.

Gutsy performance by JS7 but I hope he did not ride with a concussion. I have a lot of experience with PCS and it is a nasty thing. You can have a concussion and not even know it. I hope they check him out well because I find it hard to believe he did not sustain a concussion the way he was after that crash... JS7 is nuts for jumping that wall all night. He could have won that race by not taking that chance for 20 laps. That was a risk that no other ride wanted to take. It's more than ironic that it was a simple everyday mistake that cost him the race and not that wall-jumping move.... RV2 was smooth and fast all night, this is now his title to lose.

Profile Picture
BigPoppa wrote: 9:15am March 6, 2011

All I can say is that I have a new found respect for JS7, to get up after that crash and get up to 9th was amazing. After the wreck when he got up to get on his bike and then fell down I thought he was done, that they shouldn't have let him back on the bike. Then he goes out and starts to kill it, still jumping the wall after a crash like that the dude has no fear. RV2 having Baker as his trainer is starting to pay off.

And if RD5 could get any luck he could win a few but it seems its not in his cards this year. But at the same time he needs to work on passing guys, he sits and follows Millsaps forever it seemed like when CR22 worked his way past rather quickly and then started to gap them. After that he had no chance of chasing down CR22 as he was already gone. He almost rides to reserved and need to hang it out every now and then. He has the speed, just needs the drive.

Profile Picture
The What wrote: 9:33am March 6, 2011

Not a concussion fellas he was winded...

Baggett owned the lites.

Someone posted can't take the stupid out of the coon. Maybe so man..I don't get caught up in the race thing...this world has bigger problems afoot..but James should have just kept his gap to prove the point...did he need to be 8 seconds ahead on lap four?

But NO ONE rides at that pace (obviously after last night) so how would we know what is stupid versus a simple mistake that ends in disaster because of the speed he is going?

The reason for most of the hate is simply this: RACISTS! In this day of 2011, we still have people who hate anyone that is black period! Especially when this black person has become successful at what he LOVES to do! Not all the hate for Stewart is because of being racist because some of them are just a few jackasses who would talk crap about anybody that they are jealous of. I praise everyone who has the ability to be out there racing AMA professional supercross! Because there is nothing, NOTHING better than our sport! Others will always state that its not but Supercross/motocross is the most fun and the most physical demanding sport there is!

Profile Picture
jairtime wrote: 12:21pm March 6, 2011

@HJ, we're not racists. We just don't like people who think they are entitled to everything instead of being willing to earn it fairly. Stewart has been pushing people around since he turned pro. Those who are bullies are not liked. It doesn't matter what their color is.

I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times, but it still never registers. It's the conduct we don't like. It's the content of the character we don't like. A black helmet, bird or car doesn't offend us. We don't care what color somebody is. You throw out the race card if somebody is not falling at the feet of Stewart, Obama or Jesse Jackson. That whole race card thing is getting really tired.

Profile Picture
HJ wrote: 12:34pm March 6, 2011

Stewart is not a bully! Never was! I dont see that! He just whipped ass because he was going faster than anyone else! Just look back when he was on 125's! I dont get the attitude of him being someone like that. I dont see it!

Also you need to wake up! There ARE people who hate him for being black! Im not pulling a race card here. Its a fact, jack! There are people on here that want to use the N word on here. I know they do it behind closed doors. Thats nothing new or surprising about that. Its just a fact! It happened to him at a Southwick national a few years back where they were yelling at him with the N word while he rode by with Stewart's mother standing near this fools beside the track! So I dont want to hear your excuses just because a person is successful and you THINK he is a bully! Get real! Stewart has alot of heart to do the things he has! Most riders would just give up because they dont want to go through all that hurt and stress it takes to win! Enought said!

Lets set the record straight here... I think all the racist B.S. on this thread got started by the jack-wagon that did use a racial slur in regards to Stewart (Unless I missed it, I think that comment has been removed from the list.) That is who was being called a racist. I don't think that anyone else is being called a racist because they don't like Stewart. (Some people are too sensitive.)

I think Stewart didn't stop and look both ways before re-entering the track because he was in dead last place.

The blue flag is not just displayed for the one rider immediately in front of the leader. It is shown to the group of riders in front of the leader. It was the 800's fault that he pulled over and let a rider pass for position. He's too accustomed to getting lapped by Stewart.

What exactly did you mean? Your intention is not very clear.

Are you saying RV2 will win the SX title in '11 (many will agree with you),
or RV2 will ENDO, blow a race and possibly the '11 title for himself?

Envisioning a future SX Champ in the making..., COOL.

Wishing a crash & potential injury on a rider
(any rider for that matter)
who had his 'time' in St. Louis last year or..., NOT COOL.

Look up some history about the 2010 season
if the latter was the intent of your comment.

A lot of people should re-read some of their comments
before sending them out there into RacerX cyber-space.

to be fair, in 800's defense:
if you think that alessi is a squid, then you are wrong. On 125's he got 2nd place in each of his 2 outdoor seasons, plus he got on the 450 podium, behind r/c and windham, in his second ever pro race. he just looks bad in this second go-round with ktm. the guy you see out there now, is not the same guy as a few years ago. not sure exactly what happened.

Mike’s decision to jump on the 450 for the 2007 Toyota AMA Nationals after only two seasons aboard a 250F had many people questioning the logic of the young Californian. He went into the outdoor season unsure of what to expect, but knowing that he could run top-ten and maybe even top-five. His predictions turned out to be fairly accurate as he spent the beginning of the outdoor series riding on the bubble of the top-ten. Then, with the reported arrival of a new rear shock that World GP racer David Philippaerts had been testing, Mike suddenly came alive over the fourth-of-July weekend at Red Bud. He grabbed one of his patented holshots and proceeded to race with both the semi-retired Ricky Charmichael and heir-apparent James Stewart. Although he didn’t know it, Red Bud was the place where Mike became a contender for the outdoor championship. Soon after Mike’s immergence as a weekly front-runner, series leader James Stewart started to falter when he seemed to be in total control of the series. Starting with a practice crash at Unadilla, and ending with a knee injuring foot-dab in Washougal, the door suddenly flung open for a host of riders to win the title. Most of which had previously fought over the second and third spots on the podium. One of those racers now in the title hunt was Mike Alessi. Mike would fight it out to the last moto at Glen Helen, grabbing a streak of second- and third-place finishes along the way, only to miss winning the championship for the third year running. This time, though, second place felt like a victory. He was partially injured and unsure of himself at the beginning of the summer, but by the end of it all, he knew that he had the speed to win a national championship.

With a switch to the Roger DeCoster led Rockstar/Makita Suzuki team, 2008 would be a combination of a fresh start and a carry-over of momentum for Mike. He debuted his new ride at the Rockstar Energy US Open, showing that he had picked up his supercross game during his short period with the team and that he’d be a title threat going into Anaheim I. The supercross season didn’t last long for Mike, though, after only five of seventeen rounds he was put onto the injured reserve with a broken collarbone. He wouldn’t line up at a gate again until the AMA Toyota Motocross Nationals kicked off near his own backyard.

When the outdoor series got underway at Glen Helen Raceway, it was no surprise that James Stewart, after withdrawing from the supercross series to fully repair and heal his injured knee, was on another level of speed compared to the rest of the field. What was interesting was that Mike had come off of an injury of his own to gap the rest of the pack by nearly the same margin that Stewart was beating him by. He quickly established himself as the second man to beat in the 450 class during the first five rounds of the series. On the opening lap of moto two at Red Bud, the same place that marked his immergence in 2007, Mike suffered a horrific crash that saw him landed on several times and left him unconscious. In an internet video four days later, he re-assured his fans that he was all right, although he will miss the rest of the season.
