BTOSports.com Racer X Podcast: Bob Hannah
Tuesday, February 8, 2011 | 3:25 PMIn this week's BTOSport.com Racer X Podcast, there are strong Hurricane warnings as I sit down and ring up Bob Hannah to get his take on his illustrious career. Bob calls it like he sees it (with a smile and a wink) and doesn't worry about hurting any feelings and in this show we touch on his entire career, what he thought about the LA SX and much, much more.

Best Podcast ever! I NEVER get tired of listening to Hannah. You never wonder what he is actually thinking, because he tells it like it is. And of course he is an Idaho guy too
Wow, awesome podcast, matthes.
In the day, there were no podcasts, and very few interviews in magazines, which were 4 months late anyway. I enjoyed those lucas oil commercials at first, just to see what these guys look like, and sound like in the present day. very entertaining podcast..
Imagine what would be said about him, if they had websites and chat rooms back then.
Great podcast with Hannah! Bob is probably the ultimate bench racer from my era, and it just so happens that his business today is the same as mine too. Always entertaining.
That was a great podcast. I was lucky enough to see the Hannah race in Seattle back in the late '70s and he interviews like he rode a dirt bike, all in.
Matthes, that was a better interview than his Motocross Files episode. And that's saying something. You are making Canadians like me proud. Keep up the great work!
Dittos under every previous comment. Fantastic interview. I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of it.
What an awesome Interview. Hannah really tells it like it is.
Man I Love BOB Hurricane Hannah. loved to watch him race....
Matthes, the Wardy interview was good but the Hurricane interview was awesome!!!!! Keep up the great work. Thanks.
awesome talk what a history maker hurricane was and straight to the point no nonsense attitude &uck; politcal correctness .
Ditto, good one. you need a part 2. Hannah sounded into it and he loves to talk about himself!
Man, i love the way the gear looked back in that era, moreso than nowadays.
man, how many cool stories does that guy have! interesting as.
great poddy.
Thanks for such a great interview with Bob Hannah, Steve. I would like to have heard his thoughts about one particular rider (opponent) whom you also admired a great deal back in the day and that was Mark Barnett.
Saw both 'The Hurricane' and 'The Bomber' race separately and together (Outdoor Nationals, Trans-AMA series, USGP) and in their day (like Hannah said), few riders could sustain the long format 40 min. motos the way these two could.
I think they should have done a book on how their old school way of training, away from today's 'camps', still is key to winning. Actually they still could do a book... I'd be happy to help 'ghost' write it with you- and them. Drop me an e.mail, bro. KG
Even though we are all very blessed to be able to watch Bubba and the sport grow with him a personalty and ability of Hannah in our time would catapult motocross to the level of respect it deserves.
Great Interview! I was shocked cause Hannah actually said some nice stuff about Glover! I thought he hated him almost as much as Howerton! Pretty insightful and he tells it like it is, doesn't sugarcoat stuff. How refreshing, "most people, in this world, can't take the straight shit" Great quote!
Best podcast ever, next to Marty Smith, mainly because this era was the BEST in M-X racing. I also like it because, just listening to Hannah, really tells the "behind the scenes" of racing in the '70's and '80's...
I was at midland in 1976, watching hannah SMOKE marty smith, who was the best 125 rider for several years. Yes, I am using the word smoke here. On the very first water cooled race bike, the OW250.
oops i mean OW125. no edit function anymore.
best bob hannah interview ever. great job Mathis.....
As good as this was, it could have been so much better. In Hannah, you have a guy who's willing to talk on and on but Matthis just gets in the way too often by interrupting, ending a story too early or just not having his research facts right. Also, most of the questions were shallow. Bob is willing to go deep if you ask him the deep questions. Matthis also has an annoying chuckle that had me climbing the walls. It's nice to hear Bob speak for a long time even if it wasn't handled up to it's potential.
Even today, #39 might be too real for a 'Hurricane's World' show...great stuff, Mathes. I was at the old~school Plymouth, CA Hangtown track in 1978 where Hannah lapped all the way up to 2nd place in a 40+2 moto, it was crazy on that sandwash track. But the 'Saddleback Massacre' (as Hannah himself calls it) was without a doubt the most physical altercation in motocross I have ever seen. Howerton almost managed to drag Hannah down after he was rammed by BH in the corner following the famed Magoo double jump. Howerton was so PO'ed that he re~mounted and chased Hannah down for the win on the factory RH Suzuki (the Full Floater suspension ~ the best of the time)...ah, the memories.
He makes me want to get up from my desk at work (where i listened to the pcast!) and pump out a 40 min moto at Manjimup (Australia's Unadilla) - come oooon !!
