The Fox 50 - California Results
Friday, October 15, 2010 | 3:14 PMCalifornia is arguably the fastest state in the history of motocross and last week we asked you to vote for who you think is the FASTEST rider hailing from the Golden State. The results are in, and the King of Supercross, Jeremy McGrath, took the honor in a landslide victory. Check out the full results in the graph below.

I have all the respect in the world for MC but come on , The FASTEST from CA ??? This just proves that mostly all young kids voted on this one... Bob Hanna could start dead last and be in the lead by the end of a moto and have a 20 sec lead. That guy was the fastest by FAR !!!
how could a six time national champion get 0%, MC hannah and RJ are about even in my eyes, although RJ deserved more than 12% all this was is a freegin poularity contest. MC was the best in the world outdoors when he gave a crap.
clearly !!! a popularity vote, no disrespect to MC but those that truely know, because they saw, Hannah was the fastest - from CA. RC will remain the GOAT for a very long time.
Well, how can you argue with MC's stats? He didnt get all of those wins and titles by being slow...lol.
Stevie Wonder can see that MC is not the fastest rider from Ca.Everyone knows that Marty Tripes is the man!
and where is Erik Kehoe on this list?
It would be interesting to hear McGraths take on the list. Again I'll say in this case it is a stacked group with greatness from top to bottom. Cheers to the whole list.
Hannah was the GOAT of his day but MC was a revolution! Scrubbing? Staying low to maximize power to ground? That didn't exist before MC. I'm old enough to have watched Hannah, he was more of a RC in the early years, he would out work and out last opponents and even though he looked over the edge he was still in control. No doubt it's a tough comparison but looking at what moto has become since MC, I would say his pure originality sets him apart.
...not disagreeing with the top 4 - BUT- the O'SHOW should been in double digits percent wise ! ifyouknowhatimsayin"...
What a JOKE!!! MC was great at SX and started the hole SX only thing because in his words "I don't want to train that hard to do the outdoors"... What an Insult to the TRUE Racers... Hannah, RJ and Ward ECT...
Metta2u... Low to the ground Yes... scrubbing... NO
They should fix the graph and put the Dogger in 5th, not on the bottom. I don't know how MC gets top honors. Total BS, it just shows how uneducated the moderm MX fan is. Top dogs is RJ, Hannah or Wardy!
Being able to pick only one rider skews the results. Plus, I don't see how some of the older guys don't even get one vote. Glover is a six-time National champion. Jones won four titles. In past polls, didn't we get to pick the top 5?
BillC- your right, MC didn't invent the scrub. He invented the reason why they scrub. That's the revolution I'm talking about.
One of the things that made MC so great was his ability to soak up the lift of jumps into his body and get back to the ground in a hurry and also to carry momentum during the race. BillC, I have to disagree with you. When MC dedicated himself to the outdoors ('95, '96 and '98) he was unstoppable. Look at the last Nat he won (Hangtown '98) and he was flying in that race!
I knew from the start that California would be the most debated states. Im only 32, but I do think/beleive that the age of the poll participants would have a great effect on the outcome.
Too many great riders from California! we need a poll by class or by decades or by brand! IMHO 500MX: Lackey, Glover, Johnson - 250MX: Johnson, Hannah, Ward - 125MX: O'Mara, Ward, Glover, Lechien - SX: McGrath, Johnson, Hannah, O'Mara. When "the greatest riding stylist ever" Johnny O' was on fire he was unbeatable, the same for Ron Lechien (my favorite rider ever)! Great respect for Mike Kiedrowski, not the most talented but a real champion, 125, 250 and 500 champion + 3 Daytona SX wins, respect for Danny LaPorte, beautifull riding style and 500MX and 250GP Champion. The great and legendary Brad Lackey would probably have won 10 AMA titles if he had remained in America, Big respect for Broc GLover, he beat Hannah at 16 or 17 year's old and he was the 500cc King in the 80's and I don't now why he was for me the biggest name of the Supercross when I was a kid! sorry for my bad English.
No votes for our 1st American World Champion (Lackey's was just a week or 2 away in prestigious 500cc series) and no mention of Darryl Schultz. This state to state contest is ****ed. And where are the Danny Chandller votes; the only person to win all 4 motos of the old MX des Nations? CE
Honestly... That is why all these surveys have been such a joke. No dis-respect to McGrath... The average voter in these polls have no clue of the great champions in motocross or supercross. Yes... McGrath is the King of Supercross... But overall not the greatest out of Cali.
Anyone around since the start of motocross in this country? Well i seen them all and McGrath was great but he fizzled shortly after RC arrived and prior to that had no competiton. Hannah was the fastest, he had DeCoster, Bailey, Johnson, Howerton, Smith, and a slew of other fast guys he beat. The question here was not about titles, style, or anything else it says "fast". Hannah at the old hangtown Plymouth motocross sand track that was rough as it gets was a blur destroying everyone. It is not what you read but what you see in person that counts. Besides Hannah was blazing fast on inferior suspension as compared to McGrath.
sandranger he was far from unstopable outdoors, Ya could say the same thing about Ron Lechien, When he wanted to win he was unstopable!! But MC did not care about the outdoors, Only did it to shut up a few people he did not stick with it
MC had no competition? LOL. Stanton, Bradshaw, LaRocco, Kiedrowski, Lusk, Emig, Windham and Henry were useless riders huh?
I love listening to you clowns talk about how you think the modern motocross fan is uneducated because MC got the most votes. I think some of you guys just have an axe to grind, for whatever reason. MC took home seven 250 SX titles, 2 125 SX titles, 1 250 MX title (would have been more if he didn't step on that piece of glass), not to mention Bercy championships, the US Open, MXdN, the list goes on. Does anyone remember supercross 1996??
Lots of fast dudes came from Cali, but the poll got it right. MC was the fastest Californian to date.
Was this the poll where you could only vote for one? If so, I think the results would be less odd if we could have picked our top 3 or 5.
Mcgrath may have won, but I think Jeff Ward is the most accomplished rider on that list. He was and is just amazing to me. Tough list though. I mean O'Show was pretty awsome also.
theschneid7 calling the old school clowns, is a little harsh. The modern SX racer that McGrath very aptly represents will never face the obstacles that us old dudes faced in competition. The SX influence while it is very popular with the masses which are wowed by big air and groomed , choreographed rhythm sections, takes the sport further away from the only form the sport had back when dual shocks and drum brakes ruled. Hannah's early monoshock Yamahas, while they were a bit of a revolution were horrible handling dirt bikes and we were just then learning about "set up". We rode those tanks on natural terrain un groomed rock infested tracks with trees with ribbons wrapped about them for our nationals. This isn't a bad thing though all of our competitors run what they brung as well and the playing surface was level (just a figure of speech). My old clown point is that a poll won by such a landslide doesn't justly represent the past champions that many of the voters probably have never even read any media about. I believe that many of the voters think McGrath is an old dude!
McGrath 2 to 1 over Hannah and FOUR to one over Johnson ? Please ! JimM Carlsbad CA
where is Kenny Zahrt on this list?
Lets be honest here.. Their is only one racer that changed motocross!! His name is Jeremy Mcgrath I could only wish we would see another racer like him. Talent, creativity, showmanship, and skill all rolled into one. He's a mx hero and I would love to see him win just one more time :)
How about this fact to put things in perspective. Ryan Villopoto was born in California, I'd think he would get a few votes?
This result is weird and very Sx biased. While MC ruled indoors, I thought it was a motocross vote. Not having Magoo as a contender was bad. Broc Glover should have a lot more than 0% but I guess whilst he was a fantastic rider, he never really conected with the fans like MC Hannah or RJ. Marty Smith & Marty Tripes deserve a lot more votes. What's funny is there isn't a current SX or MX star listed. What about Alessi??
Why does people think this was a outdoors only vote?? If you read the page, it shows all championships that they won. All is included. And MC ruled indoors for sure, but he was a force outdoors too. He won a title, and finished second to Emig one year do to a crash and injured shoulder at one race, the points were that tight at the time. So one mistake kept him from winning a 2nd title. While I do not think he was the best on this list, he deserves a little more respect than some of the Hannah fans want to give him. He is an excellent rider in any dicipline. And guys are saying kids voted him on here, kids?? Really. He hasnt raced in almost 10 years. The guys who are saying that were kids when Hannah raced, and thats why they love him. So whats the difference. Everyone on this list are excellent riders who deserve tons of respect. Quit whining and be happy if you got to witness any of them race.
Thats right BD he diseves respect, BUT 1 oudoor title is all MC got so How sandranger can say he was unstoppable I don't get.
The only rider I ever saw that was unstoppable was RC.
Glover got nothin? Problem with polls like this ..They don't ask for a raniking of top 5! Without a doubt MC! But Glover beloings in teh top 4 at least!
wait til they get to florida, that will be a good one.
JS was unstoppable in 08 .... 24-0 is unstopable. When MC won his title that was the year henry broke is back right??
MC may have dominated Supercross during his time. But i have to disagree with him being the fastest man from the state of california. RJ, Hannah, Wardy, O'show, Glover and also Lechein. If i'm not mistaken Danny Magoo was from Ca also.
