When are these guys gonna learn? X-games is a one weekend deal. You guys need to leave that garbage event to the guys who cant make it in SX and MX. Josh probably had a good chance at getting a ride for next year. Now what? Stupid in my opinion just like Josh Grant last year.

I think it was very smart of James Stewart to back out of that "dog-and-pony-show" called the X-Games. Every year fewer big name riders sign up for that abomination, and this is why.

Xgames are big money and big sponsorship, Josh would be a fool to not capitalize on it, expecially since he aint racing right now. Besides, anyone that has any skill can do a backflip, this is 2010 now and it ain't a hard trick... consider it the new heelclicker!

I'm not sure what to think about this, but some of you guys love to kick a guy when he's down. "Hill is the same waste of talent as #338." Hey, the guy was vying for the championship lead in SX THIS YEAR. So he tried a backflip? Jolene VanVugt does them pretty easily on Nitro Circus. If he went about learning it the right way, he's a talented enough rider to get it down. Travis has done it on the friggin' SX track! Bad move, in hindsight - maybe. Like it or not, an athlete can become a household name more easily at X Games than at the AMA Nationals ... and Josh wasn't riding them anyway.

Brooks won't do the nationals because there's no money in it or not enough for him. Check the Racer X podcast. I bet James is coming to the nationals A) for his show (remember- his SHOW wants him to do the MXdN and he won't get picked if he doesn't ride any nationals) and B) Yamaha wants his butt and their new 450 on the track. Race on Sunday (Saturday, yes I know), sell on Monday.

Was he still under contract with L&M or did that end with the SX season? Maybe that's why Brooks wasn't there to stop him.

Wow, Josh really went from hero to zero this year (his results, not him as a person). It's obvious he has talent and can do well when he applies himself, but I would be very surprised if he were to get a ride for next year, unless he is contracted to L&M already???

Profile Picture
sef154 wrote: 2:35pm July 23, 2010

I'll say it again, an athlete can become a household name more easily at X Games than at the AMA Nationals (which Hill isn't riding anyway). His salary came from riding SX. (We know -- or should -- that L&M is a SX-only team.) I didn't say backflips were easy, BKR; I said that someone with Josh's skill should be able to learn to do it. He was entered in "Speed & Style," which requires tricks within a race format. According to EXPN, "After extensive foam pit practice, (Hill) landed his first attempt on the dirt perfectly, but on the second try he let go of the bike while upside down and landed on his feet. Although his YZ450 narrowly missed hitting him he still suffered a broken right femur, broken right humerus, a fractured pelvis and a partially collapsed lung. Surgery is schedule for this evening (Friday, July 23)." Tell me, don't guys get injured at their practice tracks sometimes? **** happens. You don't have to crucify the guy for trying something new and different. Oh wait, some of you do; it's in your nature. (Not you, BKR.)

I agree about the household name at X-Games, but you have to do something unreal to accomplish that, not just a backflip. I think everyone is doing them now. Most of the crowd yawns at backflips nowadays. I won't crucify him but you have to use your noodle. He most likely has damaged his ability to race the SX season next year now, and in this day of limited team positions....? Risk/reward. Would've been better off practicing and training. I think he is now thinking...."what was I thinking?" Imagine if the bike didn't miss him..... Hill's injuries are serious but could have been so much worse.

Profile Picture
BillC wrote: 3:17pm July 23, 2010

Oh sef154 there out there but eveyone loves a winner so there very few, Not that there is much to detract on RD. But the slightest thing and people go off defending him but others like Hill its like pile on time. People saying he should be doing this or that... well ya know what Hill is a big boy and can do what HE wants so live with it. He makes the calls not you.

Profile Picture
BKR wrote: 3:35pm July 23, 2010

BillC, you're timing is off. No one told him what to do, we're saying what he shouldn't have done. So true that he can do whatever he wants anytime he feels like it. As anyone on this earth can. We've seen it before from others. They have the right to do whatever they want but in hindsight things sometimes look different when you realize "Gee, I am human and bad stuff can happen". Hill's first landing was not clean, judging by the two flattened rims. SOMEONE was telling him something and he decided not to listen. (Painful) lesson learned.....or not. But he's the one that has to live with the consequences now BillC, not any of the MX fans out there. It's now HIS surgery, HIS recovery, HIS career that is affected. Reading some of the comments over at TWMX under the video really makes me fear for our future.

Profile Picture
kwtriple wrote: 3:39pm July 23, 2010

Considering what he had to loose compared to what he would have gained for pulling off a back flip, I would say it was a bad call. Sef is right about the household name thing. I teach at a Community College and I offered extra credit to anyone who tell me who won the SX championship this year. I only got one response and he said travis pastrana

Profile Picture
sef154 wrote: 4:12pm July 23, 2010

Just to clarify something: the event was ""Speed & Style." In stating that "you have to do something unreal to (make a name for yourself at X), not just a backflip," you seem to be thinking "Best Trick," or "MotoX Freestyle." Speed & Style doesn't require the kind of complex tricks that the others do. A couple of years ago, Kevin Johnson (Team Faith) won the event, and he didn't have any "world class" tricks, but the simple ones he had - combined with his speed - did the job. Josh probably figured a "simple" backflip might put him over the top. Risky? Sure, but isn't that what these guys live on?

Profile Picture
sandranger wrote: 4:14pm July 23, 2010

Actually, a backflip ALMOST won a race a few years ago when Pastrana attempted to pull one after winning his qualifier at Daytona. I think that this was when the AMA threatened to pull his license if he pulled another stunt like that again, lol. As for Hill, well we all make choices and either claim the glory or deal with the consequences. And I would agree that the X Games gives an athlete big exposure, what does that do for them exactly? Let's take Josh Hansen as an example: he has won the gold the last 2 years, but what has it really done for him? And I am asking because I dont know. Has it brought him more sponsorship deals? Or fame? Yes, this formula worked for Travis Pastrana BIG time, but Hansen is not Pastrana, who is the King of Xtreme.

Profile Picture
sef154 wrote: 4:17pm July 23, 2010

BillC, you're one of the ones I was thinking of when I said Dungey "has plenty of detractors out here." For you, he doesn't pass very well (although he's winning virtually every race). The more extreme "negators" claim that if he had any "real" competition out there, he'd get his butt kicked. Everybody gets blasted here, from RC to Joe Blow poster. It's just some people's nature.

BKR wrote: 4:30pm July 23, 2010

I agree with that Sef, but is Kevin Johnson now a household name since winning the event? Has he even made $15,000 off that win? I don't know about money other than he didn't get rich from it. The following have found fame and fortune: Deegan-as much for his tricks as for his spiked shoulder pads and Mulisha Generalism. Metzger-all around FMX exposure. Pastrana-obvious why. Twitch-because he is good and has Tourettes. Carey Hart-because he married Pink. Seth: because he peeled his scalp off, maybe more than once. Any of the current top guys: I know their names but does that make it household? I can't tell you who's the best. These other guys did it with years upon years of X-games and now stuff like the Nitro-Circus. Streetbike Tommy is probably more of a household name than Nate Adams is. Hill definitely would have made a name for himself if he had pulled that crash at the event though.

As for me, So he has won most every race, That does not mean he is a great passer. He is very calculated, Never said its bad but it has cost him some wins, Thats all. Hey TripCARLYLE____ It aint a hard trick for the freestylers because they have all learned them in 01-02 doing thousands in foam pits. If i have been doing that for 8 years, prob no big deal. I must admit i was in shock n awe when i saw chad reed flipping the factory makita suzuki. I'm gonna take sides with SEF. if it werent for 09 X'games, Hansen would have never gotten the PC ride. and if he kills it at X'again. He'll prob (most likely) get the ride again. hopefully on a 450. BillC.. it looks like your writing and spelling have dropped back off. I have been watching this debate about RD not being a good passer. With all due respect you make no sense BillC. It is my understanding that he has won all but three motos? So if he holeshotted every race then he has not had to pass anyone so you can't even make an argument that he is not a good passer. If he hasn't holeshotted every race which he hasn't, then he has had to pass the top riders to win. So I don't understand what you base your comment on. DUNGEYRULES!!!!!!!

Here we go again............. He WIN'S!!! I KNOW THAT!!! My point is he does not pass people as fast and RV, RC or JS would, He will stay behind and wait for a better place to do it where they will just blow past people. Thats all I am saying. It happen in SX this year a few time. One time it was TC in the lead when RV and RD move into 2nd and 3rd, RV went by TC in 1 lap, it took RD 4 or 5 laps to get by. By the time he got into 2nd RV was GONE, race over. RD pit board even said "GO WITH RV" but he could not get it done quick enough. In the "BIG" picture it did not matter but it is what it is why is it so hard to understand my point? RD even said that night I need to get by people faster and I thought that was very big of him to not cry about getting beat.

I can't answer regarding Kevin Johnson, BKR. But I'm sure he got more acclaim for that than for any of his racing exploits. As for Hill, if people were to see him win X Games (and he was probably entered in Moto X, so that's a chance for two medals in the same games), and then they tune in to a SX on CBS and see Hill running toward the front, good chance he's got a new fan. And the sponsor exposure has to be a good thing (maybe some bonuses?). Plus, clearly he wanted to do it. Another one of those wacky dirt bike riders, you know?

Back to Hansen. Winning X-Games SX had a lot to do with him getting a shot with PC but he wasn't doing backflips either. If Hill was just doing SX and not risking it trying backflips, I would not begrudge him doing X-Games. He is an accomplished SX rider and a novice FMX/backflipper. X-Games SX is another race for him and others. Backflipping is a whole new (uncharted) territory for him. I think the results speak for themselves right now.

BillC, you and your "crateeks" of Dungey and his passing. I have never heard of a CHAMPION being criticized for the method he passes in (unless he knock guys down). Here's a results check for you. JS and RV are the two you keep using as the measuring stick for blitz passing as it should be done, according to you. They are both injured for most of the season this year as well. If both of them backed off just a hair once in awhile and took a page out of Dungey's book, instead of "BillC's Manual on Passing Quickly" they might not be injured. RV might have won the championship. A huge part of Dungey's game is patience and not crashing to gain a spot when the BIG picture (as you point out) is what matters. Did you ever hear this one? James Stewart wins every race he doesn't crash in?.......BUT he crashes a lot! A 2ND or 3RD as opposed to a DNF sometimes is what wins titles.

I really don't understand top racers who risk their careers by trying freestyle or supermoto. While riders are certainly free to do whatever they want with their lives, it detracts from the sport when a top rider is out with an injury, especially one that didn't have to happen, that wasn't practice- or race-related. I don't want to see an rider hurt, but if you're fool enough to take the risk....
