Without Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart competing at Unadilla, this opened the door for a new rider to step up and hold the distinction of being the fastest rider of the weekend.

Ryan Villopoto was the fastest rider in New York

Surprisingly, the rider logging the fastest lap time out of everyone on Sunday turned out to be from the AMA Motocross Lites class, as Ryan Villopoto’s 2:11.140 in the second moto topped the charts in both classes. Not too far off the pace was RV’s teammate, Ben Townley. The New Zealander nailed the fastest lap time in the first Lites moto, with a 2:11.671, and backed that up in the second moto with a 2:12.326. But what’s truly impressive about Ryan Villopoto is that he was able to cut three seconds off of his first-moto fastest lap. Almost every race we see the rider’s second-moto lap times get slower, but RV really wicked it up. (Then again, he only made five laps in the first moto before he smoked his engine after getting a hole in his radiator.)

Going faster in the second moto was also the case in the AMA Motocross class, but that was a direct effect from the track conditions, as their first moto saw a good amount of precipitation, making for a very slick race surface. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry scored the fastest lap in the first moto with a 2:14.344, and Team Honda’s Andrew Short was quickest in the second moto with a 2:13.013.
