Record-Setting Television Ratings for Amp'd Mobile SupercrossThursday, February 9, 2006 | 6:39 AM
AURORA, Ill. (February 8, 2006) – After completing its seventh race
of the 2005-2006 season at Anaheim, California’s Angel Stadium, Amp’d
Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series has been
watched by more fans this season than ever before in the sport’s
history, garnering impressive consistent television ratings on both CBS
Sports and SPEED.
Amp’d Mobile Supercross has put together back to back weekend ratings of 1.5 and 1.3 on CBS Sports for the Anaheim 2 and San Francisco telecasts. Combining the very consistent and strong numbers on the CBS Sports network television package, along with the strong numbers with the cable package on SPEED, supercross television viewership is at an all time high. To date, SPEED has put together an impressive .47 GAA (gross average audience) per event for households, compared to .36 GAA per event for households on ESPN2 last season.
“It’s compelling television. The ratings are comparable to regular season NCAA basketball, the Winter X Games, PBR, and other sport properties on network television. It’s a great next step in the evolution of supercross to mainstream America. We have been fortunate to have some epic Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart battles that have made for exciting television,” said Ken Hudgens, vice president of marketing, Amp’d Mobile Supercross. “The CBS numbers, coupled with the impressive SPEED numbers mean more people are watching supercross on television at this point in the season than ever before in the history of the sport. While that’s good, we believe it’s just the start.”
“We are pleased to see supercross off to such a great start with its debut on CBS Sports,” said Rob Correa, senior vice president, programming, CBS Sports. “The races have been exciting and we look forward to a strong finish to our first supercross season.”
“SPEED certainly expected a strong ratings performance from this popular sports property,” said Hunter Nickell, SPEED executive vice president & general manager. “It’s loaded with some of today’s most well-known racing talent, Amp’d Mobile Supercross is one helluva show and SPEED delivers the best motor sports coverage on television. That’s a combination that can’t be beat.”
In fact, SPEED’s supercross ratings to date already are equal or better than cable ratings for the series last season on ESPN2, with a very similar number of households carrying both cable networks.
“When a fan is looking for the most action and the most insight in the world of racing, he or she turns to SPEED without hesitation,” Nickell added. “When it comes to actual audience sizes for motorsports events on television, SPEED’s numbers are often equal to or greater than audiences on larger networks. We’ve seen that with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and now we are seeing the beginnings of that with Amp’d Mobile Supercross.”
