Shaun Palmer injured in Italy

Monday, January 16, 2006 | 6:33 AM

Shaun Palmer's Olympic medal hopes basically ended over the weekend when the snowboarding icon suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during a practice run at a World Cup event in Kronplatz, Italy. According to USA Today, the 37-year-old said in a phone conversation from the Atlanta airport, "It hurts, but I'm staying sober. I don't know what's next, but it's not over." Palmer, a part-time motocross racer, battled back from a drug overdose a year ago that almost cost him his life. He was hoping to win a medal in snowboardercross, a new event, at the ucoming Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy.
