High Point was absolutely epic this weekend. The weather was impeccable and the track conditions were ideal to say the least. There was around 150 riders on Saturday, then nearly 500 signed up to race Sunday.

It's funny how every trip to the track rewards you with seeing something spectacular. The "Oh my God" moment of the weekend for me was when Bad Billy and I were abiding by the fenceline, just checking it out. There was an ole boy out there in the C/D practice eyeing the big double in the middle of the track. I saw him give it the "I'm hitting it next lap" stare the circuit before so I remembered to watch for him. Well, I had forgotten about it when a 450cc panic rev shredded through the air. There was ole boy, 30 feet in the air, WAY WAY over jumping the infield double.

Let me paint a picture for you. He had a brand new bike, nice new gear, but he was a little on the heavy side. I mean, the guy had some skills you could tell, but probably didn't need to be hitting that double. This notion was surely embedded behind his wide eyes as he contimplated that when he landed it was going to be very, very hard.

It was.

He slammed down so hard I felt the ground shake, then I heard the bike make a sound it wasn't supposed to be making. It was making power - and a lot of it. When he landed all his weight shifted to his throttle arm and that 450 was eating! Making the corner was an after thought. All this poor bastard wanted to do was shut her down quick or he was going through the fence. Not into it. Through it.

Observing this calmity over the top of his sunglasses, Bad Billy gauged it was coming right at him and deftly took a few steps to the right.

Either by skill, luck, and/or sheer adrenaline - this guy managed to do a double-tire slide into the bottom of the fence and actually berm his 450 off the chain links. Bad Bill and I just looked at each other with both eye brows raised over the tops of our shades.

Oh yeah, I hucked the triple behind the starting gate, so I think I'm all bad now.

1999-2009, Filter Publications, LLC.
