I grew up in New Jersey, and I started following this sport every week in 1987, when I was finally able to read well enough to follow it every week. Most third-graders don’t read Cycle News–level stuff every week, but that was all we had. As far as I know, not a single supercross race aired on TV in 1987. The Carlsbad USGP was done, and with it, the ABC’s seminal Wide World of Sports coverage. Unadilla’s Motocross of Nations aired as part of the MotoWorld show, but our cable network didn’t get that channel.
