Sarah Smile: Sugar Situation

Posted by Sarah Whitmore on Thursday, March 05, 2009

Warm gooey chocolate chip cookies, just out of the oven that melt in your mouth as you bite into them, you barely need to chew... Cupcakes with frosting piled so high you have to break the bottom part of the cake off just so you can fit it in your mouth... Superman ice cream, double scooped... Grandma’s apple pie that you always find room for even after a pound of turkey and a half-gallon of mashed potatoes... A sugar cookie from Mrs. Fields with so much extra frosting it’s too rich to eat in one sitting...

As you can see, I have a problem. Drugs and alcohol hold no power over me; however, anything with frosting, the brighter the better, preferably blue or green gets me every time. Color does matter; I swear that the orange Oreos you get at Halloween taste better than the regular white ones. I love desserts and I am very particular about them. I love pie and ice cream, but everyone in my family knows to never put mine on the same plate. The ice cream just makes the pie soggy. And I never eat anything with nuts: The crunchy texture and bitter taste just ruins the entire treat.

My mouth is watering as I write this, and you are probably wondering why I don’t just go get a dang cookie and shut up. Well, for one thing, I have blood-sugar issues and am not really even supposed to eat sugar; it’s a terrible curse. Also, I do try to be careful with what I put into my body and I know sugar is about the worst thing for you! I typically try to only eat one dessert a week. But I have been staying with the most wonderful family out here in California and the only problem is Kelle and Sidney love sugar just as much as I do! One of us is always craving it which means that even if the others aren’t we eat it because it’s there.

Soon, I realized my “one a week” turned into “one a day.” When I tried to get back on track and turned down the yummiest brownies ever, Kelle, in shock, suggested we make another bet. A couple of years ago, we made a “no chocolate” bet; she lasted a couple of months, and I lasted a year and half. Yes, a year and a half with NO CHOCOLATE! Finally, last June at my Grandma’s birthday party, I just decided I should celebrate with her and indulged in her cake.

So, back to our bet: Five of us are putting money into the pot and are not eating any desserts or candy until Easter. It was just over 50 days and we figured that way we could still enjoy the Holiday. Its $300 to win, but right now none of us have caved, so if we all make it we are going to reward ourselves with a trip to the spa, and of course a chocolate party.

I’ve made it over ten days now. The first few days are always the hardest. It’s those first days when you have a headache, and are tired and grumpy. Your body is telling you to do anything for sugar. I fantasize about beating up little kids and stealing their ice cream. And at night I dream about eating chocolate cake feeling guilty, only to wake up and realize I am still in the bet. I am officially over the hump now. Sugar doesn’t control my every waking and sleeping thought. Sure, it’s still hard, especially when you have friends that love to eat ice cream right next to you and try to shove the spoon in your mouth! People who aren’t in the bet with us just don’t understand. One person actually told me I was ruining my life! Everyone else just tries to convince me to cheat and not tell the others. But I’m not doing it for the money. I am a female motocrosser, so I am obviously not driven by money and material possessions. I really just like winning and I love a challenge. And after I win, on Easter morning my Cadbury crème eggs, peeps, chocolate bunny and every other piece of sugar I can get my hands on is going to taste even better.
