Sarah Smile: Off-Season Update

Posted by Sarah Whitmore on Thursday, February 12, 2009

Well, I was trying to wait until I had some good news to update this, but it has just been way too long without any news. While most of my time has been spent trying to find a ride and figuring out what I’m going to be doing for this race season (and if I am even going to be racing here or overseas), the other part of my days I have been busy at the track or at the gym. So when I do figure out what I am doing, I will be ready.

I usually go to the track with my friend and fast intermediate rider Lauren Jung and her sister Ashley. Though we go riding together nearly every day, we usually take one day a week for me to train her. We have been doing this for a couple of years now and she has come a long way from the girl who never used her brakes going into the corners because, well, she wasn’t going fast enough to need them. She definitely needs them now. In fact, she improved so much I got to watch her win the second moto last weekend at Glen Helen against some of the fastest intermediate girls in the state.

It’s funny because some people are wired for competition and others aren’t. We are definitely competitive and we bet each other on nearly everything. The first day I got out to California after being stuck in the snow of Michigan for way too long, she thought she had a shot at beating me. Loser had to buy the winner lunch. One of my favorite foods is a Vietnamese dish called pho, but none of my friends like it so I never get to go. I really enjoyed eating it that day and she hated it so much she swore she would never bet me again. But she must have a bad memory because last night we went go-karting at P2R for a fundraiser that Panic Rev put on for Jordan Delaurier, and before long we were talking crap and making another bet.

Now, I suck at go-karting. I actually think it’s a waste of money – not for everyone, just for me. Because I am so lame at it, and I am too competitive and I can’t enjoy things I am no good at. But it was for a good cause last night, and it is easy to get into the competition of things when someone says they are going to beat you. We weren’t the slowest people out there, but we weren’t the fastest either. As for who was faster between us? Let’s just say I am again going to enjoy eating pho, and Lauren has once again sworn off making bets with me.

So I hope to have some good news coming soon, but until then I am just going to continue riding and training, and hopefully make more bets and eat more Vietnamese food!
