Motocross by the Numbers:

A Season Recap for the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship

LAGUNA NIGUEL,
Calif. (Sept. 11, 2008) - From the opening round at Glen Helen on Memorial Day weekend to the Labor Day celebration at the American Motocross Festival from Steel City, the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF was one of the most memorable and historic seasons in the sport of motocross.

A revamped schedule, aimed at condensing the season and alleviating logistical issues featured the introduction of the first-ever night event from Thunder Valley, and the inaugural American Motocross Festival, which was held on a Saturday. The huge successes at each event established a potential new trend for the sport. The Fourth of July tradition at RedBud was once again a fan and rider favorite as the centerpiece of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship, as were returns to such famous motocross venues as Hangtown, Unadilla, Washougal, Southwick and more.

Additionally, the NPG and AMA introduced trio of exciting new awards for the world’s best motocross riders. The BTOSports.com Holeshot Award granted a $500 bonus in each moto for both classes to the competitor with the fastest start out of the gate.

The Ricky Carmichael Hard Charger Award recognized the one rider in each event that passed the most opponents in a single moto, displaying the similar tenacity of the “Greatest of All Time.” A mid-season introduction, the Muscle Milk Recovery Rider of the Day Award acknowledged the rider with the best increase in finishing position from Moto 1 to Moto 2 with a $1,000 reward.

Even with all the exciting additions, the focus remained with the on-track action. Leading the way throughout the 15-week summer season was Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart. Just four months removed from extensive knee surgery, the perennial front-runner dominated the field at each of the 12 events to register a perfect 24-0 record on the season, joining 10-time AMA Motocross Champion Ricky Carmichael (2002, ’04) as the only two riders to accomplish a perfect season. Even more impressive, Stewart led 369 out of 382 laps completed, running at the head of the pack for every lap at eight different events. His first AMA Motocross class championship is his third in AMA Toyota Motocross competition. He now sits tied for fifth on the AMA Motocross class career wins list with 16 and second overall in AMA Toyota Motocross Championship career victories at 44.

In the AMA Motocross Lites class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto grabbed his third consecutive championship, joining the elite company of Carmichael, Mark Barnett, and Broc Glover as the only riders to accomplish the feat. In his final season in the class, Villopoto won a career-high eight events, including seven in a row, and was the rider to beat throughout the summer. He brought his career win total to 20 to sit fifth all-time.

Every lap of the championship was featured on Speed TV, with a total of 48 hours of air time. Also, the ground-breaking Racer X Motocross Shows on Motocross.com included the half-hour Toyota Pre-Race and Toyota Post-Race shows from every round, as well as more than 50 individual videos set at and around the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship races.

Answer Racing and James Stewart Sign Three-Year Agreement

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Corona, CA. Answer Racing and James Stewart announced today that the two parties have reached a three-year agreement for James Stewart to use and endorse ANSWER RACING apparel starting in the 2009 racing season.

Stewart, who swept the 2008 AMA National Motocross series, was thrilled about his big move to the Answer team.

“I am extremely excited about this new relationship with one of the sports premier brands. At the speeds and level we are racing at these days it is very important to have the best safety equipment possible. I know that Answer Racing can provide the quality race wear demanded of me and today’s MX athletes. I am very excited about this new venture and my new signature lines that we will be designing and releasing in '09 and all the other great new opportunities that are ahead,” stated James Stewart.

Answer Racing's Director David Casella is equally excited. “Signing a three-year deal with a world-class athlete like James Stewart shows our commitment to bringing Answer to a whole new level, a level that only an athlete like James can help us reach."

Answer Marketing Manager Roger Larsen adds, “I am really excited and privileged to be working with an athlete of James' caliber. A rider like Stewart is the one piece of the puzzle that the brand has been missing. We are looking forward to a very strong and lasting relationship that without a doubt will change the face of the Answer brand.”

Look for James to be running his own replica line of Answer Racing apparel when the AMA Supercross series kicks off at Anaheim’s Edison Field, January 3, 2009.

Josh Hill to Race U.S. Open

Thursday, September 11, 2008

AURORA, Ill. – The Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open announced today that Yamaha’s Josh Hill will race in the Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena October 10-12.

Hill, 19, began his professional career in 2006 competing on a limited schedule. In 2007, Hill made his full-time professional debut in the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class and finished third overall. In 2008 Hill moved to the premier AMA Supercross class and finished in the top 10 overall at 10 events, earned four podium finishes and won the first main event of his career at Minneapolis’ Metrodome. The Yoncalla, Ore., rookie finished fifth overall in season standings.

While he doesn’t race against the top lites class riders on a regular basis, he knows they are a threat at this race.

“Yeah guys like (Ryan) Dungey are fast and (Jake) Weimer proved last year with all the chips falling the right way that you can win on a Lites bike. After 16 races it was eye opening to see how high the intensity was for the entire series,” said Hill. “In the Lites class you only have to stay focused for like six or seven weeks, and then you get two months off. The 450 class is way different. By the end of the season I started to get it figured out as my races in the beginning of the season were like a rollercoaster ride, some good and some bad.”

Hill and his team are still undecided on decide what bike he will ride at the Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open.

“I have been debating on whether or not I will ride a 250cc two-stroke at the open,” said Hill. “I’d like to bring back a little retro. I think it is cool that they let the Lites guys race; it makes it interesting for the fans.”

As an amateur Hill did compete in the 85cc Mini Invitation held in conjunction with the Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open. He finished third in 2002 and second in 2003.

“I blew it both years on mini bikes so maybe the third time’s a charm,” he said “I had a chance to win both years and ended up loosing both times.”

Tickets are now available for the 10th anniversary of the Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas October 10-12, 2008 at www.ussx.com, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 702-474-4000 or the MGM Grand Garden Arena box office. Regarded as one of off-road motorcycling’s premier races, the Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open is the final ‘major’ race of the motocross season. Tickets are available for as low as $20 through Ticketmaster.com. All tickets subject to 5% Las Vegas Entertainment tax.

Andrew Short to Participate in R2R Ride Day

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Scottsdale, AZ – Red Bull Honda’s Andrew Short will be at Red Rock MX in Red Rock Texas on Saturday, September 20th to participate in the Road 2 Recovery National Ride Day. Not only will Andrew be riding in the event, he will also be on hand for autographs along with James Marshall. There is still time to pre-register for The Road 2 Recovery National Ride Day. The track is located at 212 Meuth CM Rd. Red Rock, TX 78662. For directions click here.

The event is being held to provide support for the ASMF/R2R Mobile Safety/Sports Medicine Unit at the top Amateur Nationals. Realizing that amateurs are the future of motocross, we believe they deserve the same attention as professional athletes while in competition. The onsite medical unit debuted at Loretta Lynn's in 2007 and it provides treatment from qualified trainers and doctors that have a background in motocross injuries. The unit also provides mobile education with information on products that can help prevent injuries.

Each participant can register by building his or her own web site and setting a goal for their self. Friends and family will then be able to log on, search for their favorite rider and make a pledge in their name, either on a per lap basis or a flat amount for participating. The minimum pledge is $1.00 per lap with a 10 lap minimum, and each rider must have a minimum of $25.00 in pledges to participate. Riders may also sign up on the day of the event and have until November 17th to get all their pledges in.

Regionally, all participants are entered into a drawing for 2 Tickets with all day Pit Passes to a 2009 regional SX closest to their home. The winner will be notified on Monday, October 13th. Riders will be awarded prizes based on the number of pledges received. Some of the prizes include Bike Ramps, Leatt Braces, Complete Gear Sets, Kicker Sounds Systems, Honda Generator, and various Kawasaki and Suzuki models. Product certificates will be mailed directly to each participate, once all the pledges have been collected. The top rider nationwide with $5,000 or more in pledges will be eligible to win an MX bike. Cutoff date to be credited for donations will be November 17th, and winners will be notified on Monday December 8th.

The Road 2 Recovery Foundation is dedicated to helping AMA licensed motocross and supercross professionals with financial assistance if they sustain career-ending injuries as well as providing motivational, emotional and spiritual support to these individuals and their families. If you are interested in having your track participate in the National Ride Day www.r2rrideday.com or for more information and sponsorship opportunities contact Road 2 Recovery at 480 276-1131 or info@road2recovery.com.

Chad Reed on Mike Alessi's Crash

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Over on his website blog, Chad Reed talked about his new Rockstar/Makita Suzuki teammate Mike Alessi's unfortunate accident yesterday at the Suzuki SX track, which left #800 in the hospital with a broken leg. Here's what Chad, a witness to the crash, wrote (with small edits to clean it up):

"As most of you have probably read online that Alessi got hurt today which sucks as he only just got back from his ugly crash at redbud!" wrote the 22. "It was a pretty bad crash but could of been really bad; he got off better than it could of been! I started jumping this quad in a combo section and he tried it (I told him not to try it!) and he came up short and went flying off the berm and landed on his feet, breaking his lower tib-fib! It's a real bummer and I hope he makes a speedy recovery!"
