ASMF Mobile Safety/Sports Medicine Unit to Branson MX National Championship

Friday, November 06, 2009

The Action Sports Medicine Foundation is proud to bring the Mobile Safety/Sports Medicine Unit to Branson MX National Championship for the second year.  The event is being held near Branson Missouri in the town of Galena from November 11-15, 2009. The unit is a mobile treatment facility that will provide sports medicine services such as taping and stretching to evaluation and medical treatment of injuries not requiring emergency room transport utilizing certified athletic trainers (Christine Chmielewski and Stacey Quinn) and physician assistant (Nathan Horn) who are all experienced with motocross sports medicine. In addition to providing on site sports medicine care, the unit will bring a new level and understanding of the importance of safety and health issues to the sport by providing information to the athletes pertaining to these issues.

Certified athletic trainers are the backbone of the program and are skilled health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from sports participation. The goal of the athletic trainers at theses events is to provide numerous medical and educational services to the athletes and parents that do not fall under the EMS professionals’ care service umbrella.  Athletic trainers will fill a gap in the athlete’s care that has not been available in the past.  Working together with the local EMS providers, we are there to raise the level of care to athletes competing in action sports.” Dr. Steve Augustine – President and Founder of ASMF

The Road 2 Recovery Foundation is a 501-(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping injured professional motocross athletes. Our goal at the Road 2 Recovery would be to become large enough to completely provide for a rider for the duration of their life if they are unable to generate revenue again. We can strive towards this goal with the help of everyone in the motocross community who is passionate about this sport. The Road 2 Recovery is out there to make our sport a better safer place. www.road2recovery.com

The Action Sports Medicine Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the quality and availability of sports medicine to athletes participating in action sports. The foundation was formed in 2003 by Dr. Steve Augustine, and is based out of Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, Florida. Our desire is to become a quality resource for athletes who are looking to receive sports medicine on site services, and for the various health care workers who are looking to provide these services. The primary sports that we will be serving are motocross, BMX, skateboarding, wakeboarding and surfing. Within this population, we will focus on the amateur athlete. Our goal is to enhance the level of on site medical care at the grass roots level. In so doing, we can develop a healthier and better conditioned group of athletes, thus enabling them to maximize their capabilities and participation in their chosen sports. Secondarily, we feel confident that we can raise the level of understanding of these sports within the medical community, thus enabling other health care practitioners to better deal with the needs of this unique group of athletes. Please visit the websites www.asmfjax.com and www.joionline.net.

Also check out www.bransonmx.com for more information on the event.

Robert Pastrana Aids in Arrest After Man Attacks Police Officer

Friday, November 06, 2009

Robert Pastrana was in the right place at the right time last week and leapt to a police officer's aid when the officer was attacked by a man who turned out to be one of the U.S. Air Force's top wrestlers.

When the backup officers arrived, Pastrana told them he was there to help them and helped pull one of the "towering" man's wrists behind his back. This wasn't easy, he said. "It was just kind of a three- or four-minute wrestling match …" said Pastrana, who is also the father of local freestyle motocross star Travis. "The guy had no quit in him at all."

AMA Announces 2010 National Numbers

Friday, November 06, 2009

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- In partnership with Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports Pro Racing, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced the 2010 national numbers for pro-licensed riders in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, and the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

National numbers in the disciplines of Supercross and Motocross are assigned by the following process:

No. 1: The current series champion must run the No. 1 plate in that series.

Nos. 2-9: A champion from the previous competition year may choose a permanent single-digit number if available, with the exception of No. 4. The AMA has reserved No. 4 for exclusive use by Ricky Carmichael through 2011.

Nos. 10-999: Riders who finish in the top 10 in combined championship points in Supercross, Motocross 250 and Motocross 450 competition in the previous competition year have the option to choose a career national two-digit number, if available. These riders, by their option, may instead select a three-digit national number.

Riders who finish outside the top 10 but in the top 100 in combined championship points in Supercross, Motocross 250 and Motocross 450 competition in the previous year will be assigned consecutive two-digit numbers from the available supply until that supply is exhausted.

A comparison of riders' best moto finishes breaks a tie, unless one of those riders competed in only one discipline. In the case of a tie between a rider who rode one discipline (e.g., Supercross) and a rider who rode both disciplines, the tie is broken in favor of the rider who rode both series.

A rider who fails to earn at least one championship point during the season preceding the current season will lose his or her career number and be issued a new number based on current points. Special consideration is given to a rider if an injury impeded participation the previous year.

Note: Lower three-digit competition numbers (e.g., 100-125) are traditionally held for past or current champions from non-U.S. series who participate in a Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, or a Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross event.

Kentucky Rider Keith Guiden Hurt

Friday, November 06, 2009

From Mauri Foster:

Keith Guiden was involved in a horrible motocross accident on 10-04-09 while practicing at West Kentucky MX in Lowes, KY. He had completed many laps successfully and soon the weather began to deteriorate and it began to rain. He hit a jump and immediately felt his rear tire spin up the face and knew he was going to come up short, unfortunately he came up very short and wrecked. He was airlifted from WKYMX to Sikeston, MO and then again by air transferred and admitted to St. Louis University Hospital in ICU, where he was informed that his T6 was shattered and that a few vertebra (wings) had also shattered, he has broken ribs, chipped teeth and unfortunately no feeling from the waist down. On 10-06-09 he underwent surgery and had a rod inserted into his spine and the surgeons removed bone fragments. He is currently at Sheperd's Center in Atlanta, GA. Keith is in need of financial and moral assistance.

I recently had 500 each Honda Red Wristbands imprinted with "SUPPORT KEITH GUIDEN #916" that I will be selling for $5.00 each. I know times are tough on us today but this is for a great cause and he really needs our help. I am donating the cost of the wristbands and think our MX community will do their part in helping me raise just a small token of funds to assist him as he see's fit.

Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing one or more, all proceeds will go to Keith!

I will post photo later, just wanted to get this posted and start raising money for him as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance to all that support Keith and please continue to pray for him, he has a long road ahead and needs our continued support.

AMA Arenacross Series Notebook: Des Moines

Friday, November 06, 2009

AURORA, Ill. As the lineup of teams and riders for the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series begins to take shape, the series makes its annual visit to one of the most recognizable and loved venues in the history of the sport. For the 12th year, Des Moines, Iowa will host an AMA Arenacross Series race.

The Des Moines round is a stand-alone, non-points paying race with pride and $11,000 in prize money on the line. Several of the AMA Arenacross Series’ most well-known riders will be on hand, taking their shot at some early-season success and getting some competitive racing under their belt before the gates drop on the 2010 season in Grand Rapids, Mich., January 8-10.

Last season, Des Moines proved to be a breakthrough event for Ohio’s Michael Willard who entered the race as a privateer and proceeded to win three of the four main events of the weekend, posting a runner-up finish in the fourth behind two-time AMA Arenacross Series champion Josh Demuth. As a result, Willard earned a factory-supported ride for the 2009 season, solidifying his uncertain plans for the year.

This season, the on-track action is shaping up to be as unpredictable as ever, with four past AMA Arenacross Series champions, a trio of series winners and a former Monster Energy® Supercross contender looking to capture the win on Saturday night.

Perhaps the biggest name and one of the latest additions to the prequel race is defending AMA Arenacross Series champion Jeff Gibson. The Tuf Honda rider dominated en route to his first AMA title last season and will look to get some time on the bike before defending his crown in just a couple of months.

After choosing to take some additional time off last season by skipping the Des Moines race, two-time champion Chad Johnson and Iowa native Teddy Maier return this weekend and should be at the front of the pack when the gates drop Saturday night.

For Johnson, the 2008 AMA Arenacross Series champion, 2009 was a disappointing year by his standards. The two-time champion won just one race last season for Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki and battled with consistency. He finished fourth in the final standings but has the hunger to return to the top in 2010.

“I definitely wasn’t happy with the way last season turned out,” he said. “We had some bike problems early in the season as well as at the end that hurt us in the championship. Now that we’re moving to the big bikes I’m really excited. I enjoy riding the 450 and I think it will add a lot to the racing.”

Maier is coming off arguably the most successful season of his career. The Iowa native sat out the 2009 AMA Arenacross Series and was missed by both his competitors and the fans. However, he placed a more concentrated effort on his motocross training in preparation for the 2009 summer season and as a result was able to capture the CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals championship in the MX2 class. With high confidence, Maier is eager to return to the intimate atmosphere of the AMA Arenacross Series with TiLUBE Motorsports and give the world’s best a run for their money.

Also adding to the talented field is Demuth, who joins Johnson on the Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki team and looks to defend his night one win from 2008. Joining him is perennial AMA Arenacross Series front-runner Kelly Smith who sat out for the majority of the 2009 season after broken leg cut his run at the title short. He enters the new season with a new team at Junior Jackson KTM and a rejuvenated spirit.

Triple Effect Kawasaki’s Gray Davenport boasted a career year last season, capturing his first career victory and a sixth-place finish in the standings. He enters Des Moines looking to catch a wave of momentum heading into 2010.

After a short hiatus from the AMA Arenacross Series, Robbie Reynard and Tom Hofmaster make their anticipated returns to the intimate confines and will no doubt be players as the laps wind down on Saturday evening’s main event.

“Since the series moved to using 450’s it made me want to come back,” exclaimed Reynard. “I feel much more comfortable on the 450 and Des Moines gives me a chance to get out there and race. I really like to race so hopefully something works out from now until the season starts and I’ll try to return to the series full time.”

“I’ve actually taken a real job since leaving arenacross,” explained Hofmaster. “I work for EVS now so Des Moines just presents a chance for me to just go out there and have fun. I’m lucky to still have some great sponsors helping me out so I have don’t have any real high expectations this weekend other than (enjoying myself).”

As a whole, the entry list for Saturday night’s 2010 sneak preview is one of the most impressive AMA Arenacross Series lineups in history.

The Wells Fargo Arena is located in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa as part of the Iowa Events Center. Built in 2005, it can hold up to 16,980 fans with various seating charts depending on the event. In the past, the arena has served as the home to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League, Iowa Chops of the American Hockey League, and Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League.
