Cycle Gear Makes $10k Donation to Keep Trails Open

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Benicia, CA - On November 16, 2009, Cycle Gear, the country's largest retailer of motorcycle apparel and accessories, presented a check for $10,000 to the BlueRibbon Coalition in support of the organization's efforts to ensure continued access to public lands.

The check presentation symbolized Cycle Gear's total donation to BRC via its Trail Access Fund of matching funds in 2009.  This is the 7th year in a row in which Cycle Gear matches (dollar for dollar, up to $10,000 per annum) club and rider donations to the Fund.

Dave Bertram, off-road hero and CEO of Cycle Gear, states, "Despite the tough economic times that we all are facing, Cycle Gear is committed to this grant program in support of BRC's efforts to successfully champion our right to access trail-based recreation on public lands."

"The OHV community is facing serious and never-ending challenges that threaten our sport.  Now is not the time for the off-road business community to abrogate our responsibility to continue support for access groups that fight to protect our rights to ride on federal and state lands," Bertram said.

Don Amador, Western Representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition, said, "This generous donation by Cycle Gear will help BRC continue its OHV advocacy efforts and is greatly appreciated by the organization and our members.  It's critically important support programs like this that will help fund our land-use efforts in 2010."

Thursday, November 19, 2009

The Action Sports Medicine Foundation is proud to bring the Mobile Safety/Sports Medicine Unit to the Mini O’s for the 5th year.  The event is being held near Gainesville, Florida at Gatorback Cycle Park from November 23-28, 2009. The unit is a mobile treatment facility that will provide sports medicine services such as taping and stretching to evaluation and medical treatment of injuries not requiring emergency room transport utilizing certified athletic trainers (Christine Chmielewski and Allie Wood), physician assistant (Randy Fulford), and physician and president and founder of ASMF Dr. Steve Augustine.  Also part of the ASMF team is physician Dr. John Abbott and well know paramedic Andy Burkhalter who will be providing on the track immediate care.  The entire staff is experienced with motocross sports medicine. In addition to providing on site sports medicine care, the unit will bring a new level and understanding of the importance of safety and health issues to the sport by providing information to the athletes pertaining to these issues.

Dr. Augustine and Christine will be speaking at the first ever Safety Awareness Campaign hosted by the Brett Downey Foundation on Sunday night, November 22, 2009 at 6:30 pm.

On Wednesday evening, ASMF will be hosting an autograph signing and auction to help raise funds for the foundation.  Please make plans to attend!!

Certified athletic trainers are the backbone of the program and are skilled health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from sports participation. The goal of the athletic trainers at theses events is to provide numerous medical and educational services to the athletes and parents that do not fall under the EMS professionals’ care service umbrella.  Athletic trainers will fill a gap in the athlete’s care that has not been available in the past.  Working together with the local EMS providers, we are there to raise the level of care to athletes competing in action sports.” Dr. Steve Augustine – President and Founder of ASMF

The Road 2 Recovery Foundation is a 501-(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping injured professional motocross athletes. Our goal at the Road 2 Recovery would be to become large enough to completely provide for a rider for the duration of their life if they are unable to generate revenue again. We can strive towards this goal with the help of everyone in the motocross community who is passionate about this sport. The Road 2 Recovery is out there to make our sport a better safer place. www.road2recovery.com

The Action Sports Medicine Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the quality and availability of sports medicine to athletes participating in action sports. The foundation was formed in 2003 by Dr. Steve Augustine, and is based out of Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, Florida. Our desire is to become a quality resource for athletes who are looking to receive sports medicine on site services, and for the various health care workers who are looking to provide these services. The primary sports that we will be serving are motocross, BMX, skateboarding, wakeboarding and surfing. Within this population, we will focus on the amateur athlete. Our goal is to enhance the level of on site medical care at the grass roots level. In so doing, we can develop a healthier and better conditioned group of athletes, thus enabling them to maximize their capabilities and participation in their chosen sports. Secondarily, we feel confident that we can raise the level of understanding of these sports within the medical community, thus enabling other health care practitioners to better deal with the needs of this unique group of athletes. GNCC Racing Congratulates Randy Hawkins on Hall of Fame Induction

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Morgantown, W.Va. - Racer Productions, producers of the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series, is pleased to announce that off-road racing legend Randy Hawkins has been inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Hawkins, a long-time GNCC competitor who now owns and manages the Am-Pro FMF Yamaha team in the GNCC tour, is a seven-time AMA National Enduro Champion, 13-time International Six Days Enduro gold medalist and has won 73 AMA Nationals. He is a true ambassador of the sport.

"Randy helped raise the game for off-road racing both on and off the track," said GNCC Trail Boss Jeff Russell, who battled Hawkins for AMA Enduro Championships. "He was a fierce competitor, but he's also a great person and a real professional. His family was into car racing, and I think he brought that NASCAR mentality to bikes, which really helped the sport grow."

Hawkins started his racing career on go-karts and had early thoughts about car racing, but soon switched to motorcycles. Hawkins worked his way through the ranks until he won his first national in Texas in 1986. Hawkins signed his first factory deal in 1987 and won his first championship in 1988. From there, he launched his storied career in off-road racing.

Now, as owner and Team Manager of Am-Pro FMF Yamaha, Hawkins manages a team of championship-winning riders like Barry Hawk, Jason Raines and Thad DuVall and support riders Joe Scherer, Ryan Belue and Kyle Redman in a variety of off-road series.

"I'm honored and blessed with the career I've had racing motorcycles," Hawkins said. "I never even knew anything about a Hall of Fame; I just rode motorcycles for fun on the farm. It took a little while to sink in because it's such a great honor. I couldn't have done it by myself; so many other people were involved through support and friendship to get here. It's a blessing and an honor I will cherish forever."

Hawkins is currently featured with other 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers on the cover of the December issue of American Motorcyclist.

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Davi Millsaps

It looks as though Honda Red Bull Racing's Davi Millsaps will be switching gear in 2010 as sources have told us that he has signed a gear, goggle and boot contract with Scott USA. Such a switch would also end Millsaps' long tenure with Oakley, who he's been with since he was a 10-year-old Suzuki minicycle racer.
