Riders

Justin Barcia restored order to a wide-open Lites East class by becoming the first rider to grab his second win of the season. But although his main event went smoothly in the results column—holeshot to checkers—his night, and the race, weren’t nearly as easy as the lap charts would indicate.

Racer X Online: Good night?
Justin Barcia: Rough night, but it turned into a good night.

And I heard it started for you in practice.
Yeah did you see that? In practice, I was trying to throw down on fast lap, I was third and real close, and I was putting in a fast one and the last whoop kicked me and I went down pretty good. The last whoop in my last lap of practice. I came down on the bad wrist, and I was like “Man, this doesn’t feel good.” But I knew, hey, it’s already broken, so how much worse can it really get, anyway? And good thing I had that wrist brace on, that wrist brace saved my life tonight. Then in the heat race, I got taken out. I don’t usually get taken out, I don’t even remember the last time I got taken out.

So that’s what put you off the track.
Yes! Someone took me out, I got pushed over the berm. There was no way to get back on the track, so I just rode down the side of the whoops. I went around them, and worked my way to fifth. Then I got penalized because they said I passed guys while I was riding along the side of the whoops. I didn’t think I did, I don’t think I passed anyone, but they said I did, so I got penalized three spots. So I had 15th gate pick in the main event, and I ended up ripping the holeshot. That doesn’t even make sense.

How’d you do that?
Just ripped it! GEICO Honda puts out the power and the Dunlops hooked up!

So the main was calmer than the rest of the night?
It was. We had a lot of good fans here cheering, it was fun.

Where you marking Wilson when he got up to second?
Yeah once I got that holeshot I put down a hard sprint lap on the first lap. I did the three onto the table top on the first lap and opened up a nice gap. After that I just tried to keep that gap.

How bad were the whoops?
Man it was tough. I’m sure it’s not going to look pretty on TV, because I was all over the place. That’s my style, I guess, but I definitely don’t like being all over the place.

Barcia extended his points lead to 17 in Jacksonville.

Is the wrist any better?
No, I’d say it feels just like it did after all the other races. It’s not getting better.

Wrist brace helped?
Yes the All Sport dynamics brace. The guy’s name is Jeff Brewer, he hooked me up.

And you have a 17-point lead.
Yeah 17 for 17. It feels good, I’m stoked. Just really happy.

Laying down wood with a fractured wrist...Throttle hand of all things...Very impressive Justin...This is exactly what Champions are all about. Hats off to All Sport Dymanics as well. I listened to Justin hitting the rev limiter everywhere all night and wondered if that was because of the wrist...the brace...or just the determination of a lunatic champion in the making..lol

Picone wrote: 2:39pm March 21, 2011

No that's just his retarded attention getting over rev. How many other champions are there that have to over rev like that? One day his motor is going to pop and he will DNF cause of it.

Profile Picture
KG wrote: 2:45pm March 21, 2011

Barcia's motor won't go 'pop'..., That's what a rev-limiter prevents.

It,s Marty Smith , No it,s Justin Barcia wrote: 2:49pm March 21, 2011

Twins or what? Justin, Marty,Marty,Justin,Marty Justin

@ ...Marty Smith, Justin Barcia...

Same long hair, toothy grin, often ends up P1 ... (I get it I think...)

Maybe 'Fraternal' vs. 'Identical' twins...!?!

Smith had a smooth, aggressive style of riding but was always in-control.

Barcia's got an aggressive style too, but often nearly out-of-control.

A better comparison might be another former (Team) Honda Rider:

The late, great, Danny MAGOO Chandler !!!

Anyone else think that Barcia is just way to full of himself?

Speaking of "hitting the Rev-limit" -- at the Jax SX (practice and race) I noticed that almost all racers are now "hitting the Rev-limit" on every lap (and not just to drop the front end, i.e. doing a panic-rev); anyone know why they seem to be doing that intentionally?

RE: Barcia...

I see a confident, 18-year old kid being a confident, 18-year old kid.

Think of it this way:

If you were a Team Manager cutting paychecks,
Would you rather be paying a meek, timid rider 'playing nice' who can't quite get the job done...
or
a fearless kid like Barcia who is starting to win more often and really believes it's all there for his taking? No brainer if it was my money.

Back in the day, before the age of camera's-in-your-face, twitter, et cetera,
no one really knew/heard how 'outspoken' (or not) a rider could be.

Sure, there were interviews in the various Mags & Cycle News...
but it's just not the same thing as hearing the rider in his own words.

Most riders at this caliber 'polarize' fans; it's a love/hate thing.

Back then, We just knew when someone was fast, good and had the stones...

Too much access these days and too many opinions offered.

If Barcia can crush the competition with a busted wrist,
more power to him.

Picone...Your obviously not a Barcia fan..but look at the bright side...after Justin wins the east SX title he may just over rev himself out of fuel at the nationals...shoot...did i just say that out loud? darn it...now his mechanic will just add more fuel..rats.

Great ride this kid is gonna be hot on 450

I like JB17, but at Indy he was on the rev limiter so much, his bike was visibly just not "pulling" when others were. There were many times when he barely made obstacles because the bike simply stopped accelerating. Somebody needs to step in and fix his style. It wont work on the 450's.

Profile Picture
Comedian wrote: 4:55pm March 21, 2011

KG...Barcia is more like Hannah

Profile Picture
Comedian wrote: 4:59pm March 21, 2011

MooseInJax....dude...I hope your not panic revving in an attempt to drop your front end.

Profile Picture
KG wrote: 5:18pm March 21, 2011

@ Comedian

Agreed, sort of...
2 parts Hannah (persona/riding style),
1 part Magoo (riding style).

Profile Picture
Comedian wrote: 5:30pm March 21, 2011

KG ... Yea I have to agree ...he does have 1 part Magoo.... but i see a lotta Hurricane in that boy. Maybe we should nickname him Typhoon

Profile Picture
Spicoli wrote: 5:43pm March 21, 2011

@mooseinjax..you dont panic rev to drop the front end you panic rev when your front end drops and you go oh sh!t (stewart at daytona)..theyre revving like that because it supposedly gets the power to the ground quicker when they land (get the wheel spinning faster in the air)..knowwhatimsayin? they dont have to do it for so long in the air though

Profile Picture

KG... Like your take on Barcia.. Like the rider as well.. And I foresee a great future... His fearless way of riding... Great to watch!!!
And unlike Marty Smith.. Smith banged quite some trophy girls in his day... Barcia seems like a serious dude... Could be wrong though.. But shows his commitment. Great future champ!

Organdoner wrote: 5:59pm March 21, 2011

He isn't Marty Smith for sure. Why must he have a nick name? Let him ride, and watch him blow up lots of bikes in his young career. If that weren't a problem than why did mike Larocco (team owner) have to step up and say Look guy, Your going thru more top ends/bottom ends/ and clutches than anyone else. You've got to change your style. Plus the fact that he uses so much more energy than anyone else out there. Thats going to matter doing two 35 minute moto's on a 450. This kid got so Co Cky overnight. Hope deano cleans him out, because baggett just cleaned himself out. Sipes wont let barcia run away. He needs to worry about speed and lap times more than looking cool and making all kinds of noise. If you hear my bike panic revving,,, best believe i'm going over the bars. Unneccessary Panic revving is just overkill

Agree about Barcia or not..., It's just fantastic that there are enough unique personalities out there Racing to make it so interesting each weekend.
Keeps a lot of opinions flying, that's for sure.

One day people will look back and say we were witnessing one of the best era's of Supercross & Motocross with lots of talent on the track and no 'one' rider who is completely dominating either class.
These are some good times.

Barcia is a motocrosser's motocrosser. He wicks it hard, battles relentlessly for the win, takes mega chances, pushes it to the ragged limit, if he has fears he acts courageously despite them, he's a good passer, and he occasionally crashes but not enough to be 2nd place in points. He is #1 in points, which is amazing considering the competition and his sometimes slower qualifying times. I like his willingness to bang. He's not a quivering fear freak.

Profile Picture
OrganDoner wrote: 1:41am March 22, 2011

@JAIRTIME...... He's all good for the moment but we all know how this sport goes. You miss 3 races and its as if you never had an AMA pro liscense. Fear can definately get in your way but taking chances can get in your way as well, ask James stewart! He looks flashy with his panic revving and scrubs. But with all the scrubbing he does in one lap, How much is he pulling away from Deano and Sipes??? its not happening. J can obviously ride. whether he wins in SX or not, he's gonna get mopped outdoors by DEANO, Tomac, Marvin Musquin, baggett, sipes just to name a few. If rocky rides he'll smoke all of em. Call me boring boner but that's that

Renner101 wrote: 2:26am March 22, 2011

Great ride Barcia! I love this kid. He's a beast on a motorcycle and not afraid to let it hang out. Seems to have gotten most of the rookie jitters out from last year, riding very very well for having a fractured wrist. JB17's got heart!

Profile Picture
KG wrote: 2:53am March 22, 2011

Supercross became the venue for flashy riding styles once Jeremy 'Showtime' McGrath got here and Nac-nac'd the crap out of everybody during his 72 win/7 championship season run.

Barcia wants to win & put on a show too. Except for Daytona, it's a relatively short main event (12-13 minutes most of the time) right? Why not give the crowd their money's worth? Who didn't like the way Canard was whipping & scrubbing in Jacksonville?

Re: Barcia not really pulling away? Maybe not, but the math is pretty clear: So far, J. Barcia (w/broken wrist)- 2 wins, D. Wilson (no broken wrist)- 1 win, R. Sipes (no broken wrist)- 1 win, B. Baggett (no broken wrist)- 1 win. Record books don't talk about 'gapping' the field, just Win's.

Barcia knows the difference and trains/rides with a whole other approach for the outdoor national season. Less show, more go. With Mike LaRocco as Team Manager, Jeff Stanton now in his corner & Bob Hannah setting him straight once in a while over the phone, you really think he's gonna' lay down and not be in contention for moto wins? I think 3rd time (season) in the Lites outdoors is gonna' be a charm for this kid.

Profile Picture
kdepalma wrote: 5:08am March 22, 2011

OrganDoner.. I generally do not agree with jairtime.. But on this.. he is spot on.
As for Stewie... He's addicted to crashing and a tad stubborn not to unlearn this.
Barcia's riding style indoors is entertaining... And who cares if he does not gaps the entire field with 20 secs? Let the guy scrub all he wants.. he is still leading or in control? Entertains the crowd... And fun to watch... Bear in mind a race only last's what 15 mns max?
And watch.. He will adjust his riding style for the outdoors.. And seems like a good candidate to run up front with the other frontrunners u mentioned.

Profile Picture
professor wrote: 7:11am March 22, 2011

Whats the whole idea behind him not running upfront outdoors? He is 18 and has always been an outdoor rider, that has been has strong point, and now he has picked up a massive amount of skills, control and confidence indoors. Do the math, he has beat every rider you mentioned outdoors, and won overalls, more than wilson bagget sipes and who ever else. Bam.

JDB wrote: 7:36am March 22, 2011

Wow! Those wrist braces must be awesome!! For a hurt rider to be able to still compete and WIN!! Wow- will have to keep that website for future! LOVE it!! Full throttle! You go Justin!

Confidence is one thing, being overly full of himself is another. But, he rides fast, and wins. He has major talent, and is marketable. He's the full package.
