A year ago, I stood outside the announcer’s tower late on a Friday afternoon at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. There was Brian Deegan. He was there to chat with my fellow announcer Kevin Kelly about some of the calls we had made earlier in the week. (Brian’s son Haiden failed to clear a jump and caused another rider to crash during a moto, but Brian wanted to let us know it was because of an engine failure.) We talked about that incident a bit, and then talk turned to the future. Haiden’s contract with KTM was up, and into free agency the family was about to go. Brian had to consider Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, of course, because that squad has built the most powerful 250F reputation in the game. But Brian also liked the people he had been working with at KTM. He was considering all options, and the decision was not easy.
